From Akhadas to the Diu beach, how mallakhamb has come a long way
Mallakhamb is normally associated with the Akhadas and is especially practised in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra but presently it's being staged at the Ghoghla beach in Diu. And that gives the organisers plenty of hope.
KS Shrivastava, founding member of the Mallakhamb Federation of India in 1980, is proud of how far the sport has come and it's something he had never envisaged. 'In my wildest imagination, I had never imagined that mallakhamb will be staged on a beach. It's basically an Akhada sport. It's a moment of great pride. I consider it a personal achievement since all my life I have tried to promote mallakhamb,' said the 1980 Vikram Award winner. The award is given to the athletes from Madhya Pradesh for their sporting excellence.
Yogesh Malviya, the country's first Dronacharya awardee in mallakhamb, is also high on hopes. 'This is the way going forward for mallakhamb. If we want to popularise the sport, we need to take it to more and more people, we need to find newer ways, and hosting it on a beach, not a traditional setting, is one of them. We are heading in the right direction,' he said.
Shubham Balasaheb Ahir, who comes from Nasik but is now teaching mallakhamb in Dadra Nagar Haveli and Daman Diu, is one of the important persons overseeing the arrangements at the KIBG. He believes mallakhamb, a combination of yoga, gymnastics and wrestling, has the potential to grow in the union territory too.
'Initially, I didn't get a great response but slowly things are changing. I teach tribal kids. They live in areas where you can't make any phone calls because there is no connectivity. But these kids are strong physically and that's one of the reasons why they have taken to the sport,' he enthuses.
At the KIBG, mallakhamb was included as a demonstration sport with boys and girls to perform across Team and Pyramid Championships but the organisers have now decided to make the event competitive. Malviya elaborates, "Initially, we had a different plan but to make it more exciting we have now made it competitive but there will be no medals at stake."
There are five indigenous sports that the Government of India, at the behest of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is looking to popularise in the country. These are mallakhamb, yogasana, thang-ta, gatka and kalarippayattu. In an additional boost to mallakhamb, it's the only native sport that's on display at KIBG 2025.
Malviya says, "It's a big thing for us. Some of the kids had not even seen a sea before. I remember one little kid said yesterday, arre itna saara paani (oh my God, so much water). He was amazed. I really hope mallakhamb keeps on creating new milestones."

The inaugural edition of Khelo India Beach Games organised in May in the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu was a show of mixed emotions. The elation of victories paralleled the disappointments of falling short. During the open water swimming event, which was held under adverse weather conditions, parents were worried and were waiting on the shore for their competing children to safely return from the sea. Their concerns were drowned in the cheers of local people, volunteers and supporters for the children. The games were held on the blue-flag certified Ghoghla Beach near Diu town. Over 1,300 athletes from 31 States and Union Territories competed in six events — beach soccer, sepak takraw, pencak silat, open water swimming, beach volleyball, and beach kabaddi. Ironically, landlocked Manipur came out as the champions by the sandy shores of Ghoghla. Apart from the competition events, the hosts also put the U.T.'s own sporting talent on display on the final day of the games, demonstrating agility with Mallakhamb — a traditional form of gymnastics; strength with tug-of-war; and grit with boxing. The five-day event gave mediapersons a lot to deal with as photographers often had to deal with unwanted clutter in the background while looking for the perfect frame. Others would have to rival the decibel levels of booming speakers to get across to athletes. The natural lighting of dawns and dusks made covering the games early in the morning or late in the evening incredibly interesting, especially the events of beach kabaddi and sepak takraw, in which players were sort of flying over the sand to score points under the rising/setting sun spinning its own web. The Games had its moments despite challenges, and the beach sports community will hope that the competition augurs well for its future. Under BJP govt, Yoga Day to make official debut in Delhi on June 21
New Delhi: In a first, the BJP-led Delhi government will celebrate the upcoming International Yoga Day on June 21 at 11 sports complexes, marking an end of a blanket ban on official events on the occasion imposed by the previous AAP government, an official said on Saturday. Education Minister Ashish Sood said that for the first time the Delhi Government, in collaboration with the Government of India, will officially host International Yoga Day events in the capital. Sood chaired a review meeting at the Delhi Secretariat to oversee the preparations for the upcoming International Yoga Day and the "Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam 2.0" campaign. Chief Secretary, Delhi government, Director, Directorate of Education, among other senior officials also attended the meeting, an official said. The Minister said International Yoga Day celebrations will be held at 11 key locations including Thyagaraj Stadium, East Vinod Nagar Sports Complex, Jhilmil Colony, Bawana, Prahladpur, Bharat Nagar, Yamuna Bank, Najafgarh Stadium, Dwarka Sector-6, Ashok Nagar Hockey Stadium, among others. Sood emphasised that the primary objective of the initiative is to promote physical and mental wellness while encouraging the practice of yoga among students, teachers, and the community. Nearly 20,000 participants are expected to join, including students and teachers from Delhi government schools, yoga instructors, NSS/NCC cadets, and civil defence volunteers. Chhatrasal Stadium has been selected as the main venue, where around 10,000 participants will engage in yoga practice, supported by 5,000 volunteers from the Bharatiya Yog Sansthan. Each of the other 10 venues will host approximately 1,000 participants each. The Minister also stated that all participants will be provided T-shirts, water, refreshments, and yoga mats. Each yoga venue will be equipped with medical facilities, ambulances, fire safety arrangements, mobile toilets, sanitation, fogging, electricity, and water supply. Additionally, Delhi Police will handle security and traffic management. All major venues will feature CCTV surveillance, traffic signages, colour-coded parking passes (Red, Green, Yellow), and special arrangements for emergency services. He said District Magistrates have been directed to ensure participant transportation, safety, refreshment distribution, and availability of yoga mats and T-shirts in their respective areas. They have also been instructed to invite schools, colleges, community leaders, yoga instructors, and heads of government offices to participate and promote yoga. The event will be broadcast live on the website. Talking about 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam 2.0', Sood said on June 9 Chief Minister Rekha Gupta will plant a sapling at Rajkiya Pratibha Vikas Vidyalaya, Shalimar Bagh, to popularise the campaign. The initiative supports the Government of India's target of planting 10 crore (100 million) saplings. He said to complement the Centre's campaign, the Delhi Government aims to plant 3.7 lakh saplings in 2025-26, including 1 lakh trees, 2 lakh shrubs, and 70,000 bamboo plants in schools, near main roads, and in large parks.

'If There's A Fair Trial, Dignified Existence': Vijay Mallya Says Open To Return To India
Last Updated: Vijay Mallya said he would consider returning to India if given a fair trial and treated with dignity. In a podcast, he also denied fleeing the country amid multiple accusations. Former Royal Challengers Bengaluru owner Vijay Mallya on Thursday said he would consider returning to India if assured of a fair trial in accusations of defaulting on loans worth several crores from Indian banks. During a four-hour-long podcast with entrepreneur and podcaster Raj Shamani, the liquor baron also said he expects a dignified existence, if at all he returns to India. 'If I have a fair assurance of a fair trial and a dignified existence in India, I will think about it (returning to India) seriously," Mallya told the podcaster. As the conversation progressed, Mallya also addressed the allegations of misconduct against him and said, ' You may call me a fugitive, but I didn't run away." 'Fair enough, I didn't return for reasons that I consider are valid, so if you want to call me a fugitive, go ahead. But where is the ' chor ' (thief) coming from? Where is the ' chori ' (theft)?" he asked. Mallya is currently living in London, and he is the subject of extradition efforts from the Government of India for alleged loan defaults, including from the State Bank of India (SBI). In February this year, Mallya filed a petition in the Karnataka High Court seeking loan recovery accounts from banks. Senior advocate Sajan Poovayya appeared on behalf of Mallya. Soon after the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) defeated Punjab Kings in the IPL final in Ahmedabad on Tuesday, Mallya recalled picking a young Virat Kohli 18 seasons ago in the players' auction and said it was remarkable to witness the maestro staying loyal to the franchise, which has finally won a long-awaited IPL trophy. 'When I founded RCB it was my dream that the IPL trophy should come to Bengaluru. I had the privilege of picking the legendary King Kohli as a youngster and it is remarkable that he has stayed with RCB for 18 years," Mallya wrote in an X post. RCB, which was bought by Mallya for USD 111.6 million back in 2008, picked Kohli in the inaugural IPL auction in January 2008, and the batting superstar has only played for the Bengaluru-based franchise since then.
