Samik Bhattacharya is the new West Bengal BJP president
Mr. Bhattacharya filed the nomination papers for the post of BJP president, accompanied by outgoing State president Sukanta Majumdar and Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari. As no other candidates filed nomination for the post by Wednesday's (July 2, 2025) deadline, Mr. Bhattacharya was unanimously elected to the post.
The 62-year-old BJP leader is a party loyalist and has been associated with the party for over four decades. He has been with the saffron party from the time the BJP's vote share in the State was a mere 3% in the 1990s.
Mr. Bhattacharya has been a Rajya Sabha MP from West Bengal since April 2024. A prominent face of the party on television news channels, he is also the chief spokesperson of the party for the State.
The elevation of Mr. Bhattacharya comes ahead of the Assembly polls in West Bengal scheduled in 2026. The BJP has emerged as the principal Opposition party in the State, but, with about 38% vote share, lags behind the ruling Trinamool Congress, which had taken about 48% of votes in last year's Lok Sabha polls.
The task for the new BJP president is to strengthen the party organisation ahead of the Assembly polls and bring the rival factions of the party together. The BJP leadership's decision to direct only Mr. Bhattacharya to file the nomination is also an attempt to display the unity in the party rank and file.
Mr. Bhattacharya was also MLA of the Basirhat Dakshin constituency from 2014 to 2016. In 2021, the BJP leader contested the Assembly polls unsuccessfully from Rajarhat Gopalpur constituency.
The selection of an upper caste leader as a BJP president is a statement that the party wants to consolidate Hindu votes. The State unit wants to project Samik Bhattacharya as a face who will appeal to the Bengali Bhadralok. Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari has already emerged as a prominent leader of the party who is taking on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
The soft-spoken and educated image of the new Bengal BJP president is in line with that of the outgoing BJP president Sukanta Majumdar, an academic, representing the Balurghat Lok Sabha constituency since 2019. In 2024, Mr. Majumdar was appointed as Union Minister of State for Education and Development of North East Region.

Does it burn that BJP did what Cong couldn't in 60 years: Ashoka slams K'taka CM on Sigandur bridge row
Karnataka BJP on Monday slammed Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's decision to remain absent from the Sigandur Bridge inauguration event as 'pettiness'. The party further asked, "Does it burn that BJP achieved what Congress couldn't in 60 years?" The inauguration of the 2.12-kilometre-long Sigandur Bridge, built at a cost of Rs 473 crore, has run into controversy after Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah alleged that protocol was not followed and announced that no local Ministers or MLAs from the state government would attend the event. Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru on Monday, CM Siddaramaiah stated that it was the Centre that had initiated the conflict. Responding to the criticism, the Leader of the Opposition R. Ashoka stated on Monday that, "The people of the Sharavathi backwater region are celebrating today as a 60-year-old dream is finally coming true. They are decorating their homes with festoons and flowers, celebrating this joyous day like a festival." "But like a man who doesn't want the marriage yet goes looking for a stone in the wedding meal, you, as the Chief Minister of the state, chose not to join in the celebrations of this historic day. Instead, you stirred up unnecessary controversy. What can we even say about such pettiness?" Ashoka slammed. Ashoka further charged, "Is it making you jealous that what couldn't be achieved in 60 years of Congress rule has now been accomplished by the BJP-led Central government under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi?" "Or is it that the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, instructed you not to attend the bridge inauguration ceremony?" Ashoka asked. "When high command leaders call, you leave all state matters and rush to Delhi in a special flight just to save your chair. But you don't have the will to attend the Sigandur Bridge inauguration?" Ashoka questioned. Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari is visiting Karnataka to dedicate the Sigandur bridge project to the people of the state. Construction work began on December 12, 2019. The bridge, a long-standing demand for over 60 years, is expected to benefit more than 40 villages. Previously, people and vehicles had to use a ferry to cross the Sharavathi River. The Chief Minister had written a letter to Union Minister Nitin Gadkari objecting to the timing of the inauguration and had requested that the event be postponed. Responding to a question on Monday about the inauguration, CM Siddaramaiah said he had spoken to Union Minister Gadkari over the phone and also written to him, requesting a change in schedule for the programme in Sagara taluk. Although Gadkari had agreed to reschedule the event, the programme was schedule for Monday under pressure from local BJP leaders, without informing him, CM Siddaramaiah stated.

‘Break silence': BJP's Amit Malviya jabs Congress chief on drug taint of son's aide
The BJP on Monday went on the offensive against the Congress and demanded a response from its party president Mallikarjun Kharge over his son Priyank Kharge's alleged connections with a drug peddling racket in Maharashtra. Amit Malviya, in-charge of the BJP's National Information and Technology Department, wrote on X, 'Will Mallikarjun Kharge break his silence now? Or will Congress, as usual, protect its own? 'Trouble is mounting for Priyank Kharge as his right-hand man is caught in a drug trafficking case,' said Malviya, referring to the NDPS case registered in Thane against the junior Kharge's associate Lingaraj Kanni. 'Drug trafficking arrest taints Congress again! Congress National President Mallikarjun Kharge's close family circle is under fire. Kalyan Police have arrested Lingaraj Kanni, Kalaburagi South Block Congress President and a close aide of Priyank Kharge, son of the Congress chief and Karnataka Minister,' said the BJP leader. Earlier, the Maharashtra Police arrested Kanni on charges of drug peddling. According to the police, he was apprehended in Thane city while in possession of narcotic substances and allegedly attempting to sell them. He was also found in possession of a banned Codeine-based syrup of 120 bottles. A case was registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act at the Bazarpeth Police Station Besides Priyank Kharge, Lingaraj Kanni is also known to be a close aide of Congress MLA Allamaprabhu Patil. Kanni had joined the Congress during the 2023 Karnataka State Assembly elections. He was previously affiliated with the BJP. In another development, a First Information Report (FIR) was registered by the Station Bazar police in Kalaburgi, Karnataka, in connection with the suicide of a contractor, Sachin, who was allegedly harassed by the associates of Minister Priyank Kharge in December 2024. Sachin, a contractor from Bidar, died by suicide on December 26, 2024, reportedly after receiving threats to his life and being pressured for money by Raju Kapnoor, a former Congress corporator and a close associate of Minister Priyank Kharge.

‘Why do you do all this?' SC questions cartoonist over posts on PM Modi, RSS, says free speech being ‘abused'
NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Monday said that the right to freedom of speech and expression was 'being abused' while hearing the anticipatory bail plea of cartoonist Hemant Malviya, who has been booked over objectionable social media posts related to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and RSS workers. "Why do you do all this?" a bench of Justices Sudhanshu Dhulia and Aravind Kumar asked Malviya's counsel, Advocate Vrinda Grover, during the hearing. Grover submitted that the cartoon in question was created in 2021 during the Covid-19 pandemic and said, 'It may be unpalatable. Let me say it is in poor taste. Let me go to that extent. But is it an offence? My lords have said, it can be offensive but it is not an offence. I am simply on law. I am not trying to justify anything.' He also agreed to have the post deleted. Justice Dhulia remarked, 'Whatever we may do with this case, but this is definitely the case that the freedom of speech and expression is being abused.' Additional Solicitor General K M Nataraj, representing the Madhya Pradesh government, told the court that such acts were repeatedly committed. When Grover said there should be some maturity in how the issue is handled, Nataraj responded, 'It is not the question of maturity alone. It is something more.' Grover further pointed out that there had been no law and order issue since the cartoon was published and questioned whether arrest and remand were necessary in such a case involving personal liberty. The bench posted the matter for hearing on July 15. Grover requested interim protection for Malviya till the next hearing, to which the bench responded, 'We will see this tomorrow.' Malviya had approached the top court after the Madhya Pradesh High Court on July 3 rejected his anticipatory bail plea. He is facing charges under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including Section 196 (acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony), Section 299 (outraging religious feelings), Section 352 (intentional insult), and Section 67-A of the IT Act (publishing sexually explicit material online). The case was filed based on a complaint by RSS worker and lawyer Vinay Joshi, who alleged that Malviya hurt Hindu religious sentiments and disturbed communal harmony through objectionable content posted on social media. The FIR refers to multiple posts, including a cartoon, comments on Lord Shiva, and material involving Modi and RSS members. Malviya's lawyer told the high court earlier that he had only posted a cartoon and could not be held liable for comments posted on it by other users.
