It's parry season

It's parry season

Business Mayor18-05-2025

If you like games with parrying, there are two great new ways to get your fix: Doom: The Dark Ages and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 . These very different games — one is a fast-paced first-person shooter, the other a turn-based fantasy RPG — approach the mechanic in very different ways.
Let's start with Doom . One of the big new additions to the game is a giant shield for the Doom Slayer, and you can use it to block projectiles or enemy attacks. The game helpfully signals anything that you can parry in a bright neon green that's easy to see as you're rushing around and destroying hordes of demons.
When a green projectile gets within range or an enemy does a green attack, you can press the parry button at the right time to deflect the danger with a huge reverberation of your shield and an action-movie-like moment of slow motion. Like most of modern Doom 's action, it all looks, feels, and sounds very satisfying. But parries are also critical for fights, as they can open up an opportunity to hit the enemy with a punch or a few shots from whatever monstrous gun you're wielding.
Stay keen for something green
In intense battles, I'm always hunting for green glints to find things to parry to potentially gain an advantage. When an enemy shoots a spread of bullets with some green interspersed, I'll even run toward the danger to get in a good deflection. Some weapon upgrades have perks tied to parries, too, giving you many incentives to stay keen for something green. Read More Bobby Kotick to depart Activision before the end of the month
Doom , very helpfully, has a setting that lets you change the timing for the parry window whenever you want. I have no shame in admitting that I've occasionally made the parry window as wide as the game allows; yes, it lowers the difficulty, but I like parrying every chance I can.

Expedition 33 's parrying system is just as thrilling and impactful, but shifts from fast-paced action to turn-based battles. When it's an enemy's turn in a battle, they'll often wind up their giant swords, axes, or fists for flashy, multistep attack combos, and you can parry each hit if you time things right.
Every successful parry regains one AP, which you'll spend during your turn to use skills. More powerful skills typically have higher AP costs, so the more blows you parry, the better equipped you'll be on your next turn. Parry all of an enemy's attacks on their turn and you'll do a counter (which also has an action-movie-like slow-motion effect) that can be a very helpful way to chip away at a health bar.
That's not easy, though: Expedition 33 's gives you a very tight window to press the parry button in time to block a hit, and if you miss the window, you'll take some damage. Missing multiple parries on a single turn might drain your health bar from full to empty, and given how tricky the game's enemies can get with staggering their hits or faking you out, that will probably happen often.
The game lets you dodge enemy attacks, which has a much wider timing window, but you don't gain AP and you won't get a chance to counter. I found myself leaning toward parries far more than dodges: despite the risks, landing a successful series of parries, especially in a high-stakes battle, was usually worth the trial and error because of how cool it looked and how much it helped in a fight.
I do wish Expedition 33 had a setting to adjust the parrying windows just slightly (and if you're on PC, there's a mod that can help with that). But I also get why the timing is so tough: the rewards are high, but so are the costs.
Parrying can be a divisive mechanic, especially when it's challenging. That's why people bounce off of games like Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice and Nine Sols . But Doom and Expedition 33 both offer new and interesting takes on the idea that show just how rewarding a good parry can be.

July Games Release Dates 2025 – What's New on PS5, Xbox, Switch 2, and PC

Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek's network of contributors 2025 has already seen some massive video game releases – as well as the launch of a brand-new console in the Nintendo Switch 2 – and it doesn't look to be letting up anytime soon. July is typically a quiet month for video game releases, but with the launch of the Switch 2 and developers around the world trying to make the most of the Summer, gamers have plenty to look forward to on Switch, Switch 2, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. We've put together this list of the most anticipated games releasing in July 2025, including their release date, release platforms, and trailers where available. EA Sports College Football 26 – July 10 Release platforms: PS5, Xbox Series X|S Summer is a good time of year for sports game fans, with usually a few great titles getting released throughout the season. 2025 is no different, and while Madden is still a little while away – that's not due until August – there's plenty of football on offer this July with the release of EA Sports College Football 26. It's nominally dated for July 10, 2025, but buyers of the deluxe edition can start playing three days earlier, on July 7, 2025. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3+4 – July 11 Release platforms: PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PC Activision blew everyone away with its remake of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2 in 2021, and it's back for more with remakes of the next two games. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3+4 is a package containing remakes of some of the best games in the series, with THPS 3 especially being one of the highest-rated games of all time on Metacritic. There are a few changes to THPS 4, which has changed from an open world structure to the same timed structure as the first three games, but it's likely to be a fantastic release nonetheless, and it's coming to basically every platform under the sun. Donkey Kong Bananza – July 17 Release platform: Nintendo Switch 2 Donkey Kong in his Kong Bananza form in Donkey Kong Bananza. Donkey Kong in his Kong Bananza form in Donkey Kong Bananza. Nintendo The first Nintendo first-party game since the release of the Switch 2, Donkey Kong Bananza is a reinvention for gaming's greatest ape, bringing huge open levels, terrain destruction and manipulation, and what looks to be a surprisingly deep story. Last month's Donkey Kong Bananza Direct showed the game looking utterly phenomenal, and it could very well turn out to be one of the best Nintendo games ever made. Shadow Labyrinth – July 17 Release platforms: PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PC Releasing on the same day as Donkey Kong Bananza is a strange little game developed by Bandai Namco called Shadow Labyrinth. The name might not give it away too much, but this is actually a dark and gritty Metroidvania take on Pac-Man, of all things, and it looks bizarre and quite fun. The game was teased with an episode of the anthology series Secret Level, which acts as a prequel to the game, so you might want to catch up on the lore before you get stuck in. Wildgate – July 22 Release platforms: Xbox Series X|S, PS5, PC Wildgate is a fascinating PVP space combat game described by developer Moonshot Games as a "crew-based first-person shooter" where players team up to pilot a ship, engage in space combat and ship-to-ship raids, and try to either escape or be the last ship standing. Moonshot Games is one of the studios under the Dreamhaven banner, a new developer and publisher founded in 2020 by former Blizzard co-founder Michael Morhaime and staffed with Blizzard veterans. It promises to be a very interesting game, so it's definitely one to keep an eye on. Monument Valley 3 – July 22 Release platforms: PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, PC The third game in the Monument Valley series promises to bring mind-bending puzzles and chill vibes to players, much like the first two games. Those games were both received very well, and are among the most celebrated of indie puzzle games of all time. The game is already out on mobile devices for subscribers to Netflix, but on July 22 it's coming to PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC. Wuchang: Fallen Feathers – July 24 Release platforms: PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC There's no shortage of soulslikes on the market, but Wuchang: Fallen Feathers looks like it could bring a fascinating new dynamic to the genre. This game has faster, more aggressive combat that pushes the focus onto dodging rather than parrying, which should lead to some very different – and likely very difficult – combat. No Sleep For Kaname Date – From AI: The Somnium Files – July 25 Release platforms: Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PC AI: The Somnium Files was a fantastic investigation game, and its sequel, while great, was missing everyone's favorite protagonist from the first game. No Sleep For Kaname Date brings the eponymous character back into action, with a new canon game set in-between the first game in the second. This game brings new escape room sections to the game, alongside the traditional investigation and Somnium sections, so it should be very interesting for fans of the series. Grounded 2 – July 29 Release platforms: Xbox Series X|S, PC (early access) Obsidian Entertainment is on a roll this year, having released Avowed earlier this year, and The Outer Worlds 2 on the way later this year. Somehow, the developer also managed to squeeze in a sequel to the Honey I Shrunk the Kids-inspired Grounded. The first game was a massive hit, and Grounded 2 looks to be even bigger — or smaller, depending on how you look at it. Either way, this is launching into early access this July, so it won't be entirely finished or get a wider release just yet, but if Grounded is anything to go by it should be pretty good from the get-go either way. Tales of the Shire: A The Lord of the Rings Game – July 29 Release platforms: PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, PC Tales of the Shire is a cozy little life-sim game that's been in development for quite some time. You get to cook, fish, explore, and customize your hobbit home — a lovely and cozy hobbit lifestyle without any cursed rings and demonic invaders. This was supposed to be released in 2024, but it's finally almost here, and will be playable on just about any platform you'd want to play it on. Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound – July 31 Release platforms: PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, PC The Ninja Gaiden series has long held a reputation as an unforgiving and fast-paced hack-and-slash game, and the newest entry in the series looks to be no different. It's a side-scrolling action game developed by The Game Kitchen, best known for its similarly brutal Blasphemous games, so it should be pretty good, and exactly what fans of the Ninja Gaiden series are looking for.

Little Nightmares 2 Game Pass Ultimate, PC Game Pass and Game Pass Standard subscribers can play on July 1. Rise of the Tomb Raider Game Pass Ultimate, PC Game Pass and Game Pass Standard subscribers can play on July 1. This one is returning to Game Pass a few months after Microsoft removed it from the service. This is the second entry in the Survival trilogy of the popular franchise, and it follows Lara Croft as she searches for the legendary city of Kitezh. You'll use stealth and your wits to traverse environments without being noticed by enemies on Croft's first tomb raiding expedition. Games that left Game Pass While Microsoft is set to add those games to Game Pass soon, the company removed six others from the service. So you will have to buy these games separately now if you need to finish your campaign or any sidequests. Here's everything you need to know about the arrival of Black Ops 6 Season 4 Reloaded, including the release date and time, and what new content you can expect to see once the update arrives for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC. In Season 4 Reloaded, Black Ops 6 players are getting deadly in Avalon. Activision When does Call of Duty Black Ops 6 Season 4 Reloaded come out? The new Black Ops 6 midseason update will launch on July 2, including a substantial content package for multiplayer and zombies mode players. Here's when the Season 4 Reloaded patch will come out in your time zone: Eastern Time: July 2, 2025 at 12 p.m. Central Time July 2, 2025 at 11 a.m. Mountain Time: July 2, 2025 at 10 a.m. Pacific Time: July 2, 2025 at 9 a.m. One of the new multiplayer maps will look very familiar to Black Ops 3 players. Activision/Screenshot by CNET Two new multiplayer maps coming to Black Ops 6 One of developer Treyarch's best three-lane multiplayer maps from Black Ops 3 is making a return in Black Ops 6 Season 4 Reloaded. Fringe is a war-torn version of a small town, where heated sniper battles take place down an open street and flankers scuttle through crowded buildings that fill up the sides of the map. The new version of the map takes place on the grand opening of a rustic-looking distillery -- too bad you won't have time to grab a drink with all the gunfire breaking out around you. Fringe is a medium-sized map for 6v6 core playlists. Eclipse is a much smaller map, but it has a really groovy vibe. This Avalon nightclub is streaked through with purple strobing lights, which could be disorienting in the middle of battle. Your battles here will be up close and personal: Eclipse is a small-sized map designed for 2v2 playlists, but some 6v6 playlists will also add this map to the lineup. The Fortnite-ification of Call of Duty continues as Beavis and Butt-Head join the roster of operators. Activision CODtoons: Cel-shaded map variants arrive alongside Beavis and Butt-Head event Fan-favorite multiplayer maps are getting a cartoon glow up (or glow down?) during the CODtoons event. Cel-shaded versions of Nuketown, Babylon, Skyline, Stakeout and Grind will be added to the game in a special moshpit playlist -- which means it's fairly safe to assume you'll be playing on cel-shaded Nuketown and Stakeout for a majority of the event. The Beavis and Butt-Head event includes a free and premium reward track, wherein players can earn the Olympia shotgun from the original Black Ops, a Pickaxe melee weapon, an SVD full auto mod and a CQB auto conversion kit for the TR2 marksman rifle. If you pay for the premium track, you'll have a chance to earn cel-shaded Beavis and Butt-Head operator skins in their most famous cartoon attire. If you want to deck them out in tactical gear for the true Call of Duty experience, you'll have to shell out even more money for the Tracer Pack: Beavis and Butt-Head. Hope and pray that you pick a map that has a mystery box location in the starting room. Activision Zombies starting room challenge is a new limited-time mode Treyarch has acknowledged the long-standing challenge in the zombies community with an official game mode. Don't worry about neglecting to buy the door -- you physically can't leave the starting area in this limited-time offering. This limited-time mode is available on all of the current Black Ops 6 zombies maps, including Liberty Falls, Terminus, Citadelle des Morts, The Tomb and Shattered Veil. The space you have to work with, wall buy weapons and mystery box, perk machine and GobbleGum machine availability varies by map. Each map will have a special high-round challenge associated with it. If you're able to reach that round without getting downed by the zombie horde, you'll earn 15,000 account XP points, a high-value GobbleGum and a GobbleGum pack. Warzone players aren't getting left out of the fun with the Season 4 Reloaded update. Activision Everything else coming in Call of Duty Black Ops 6 Season 4 Reloaded We've covered the biggest parts of Season 4 Reloaded -- but that's not all that this update will change in Black Ops 6. Here are the other changes you'll see with the launch of the midseason patch. Multiplayer The Party Ops limited-time mode is a new free-for-all playlist where players compete in different minigames. These include controlling moving zones (which force you to dance), a version of red light, green light and more. The three top performing players will each count as victors. Zombies The Abomination Challenge limited-time mode brings players back to a fully cel-shaded version of Liberty Falls. Here, opening the church door unleashes Mo, a special boss Abomination zombie that's always in its enraged form. Mo is a real threat -- this guy will gain immunity to weapons frequently fired at him, refuse to eat your tossed grenades and he can knock perk bottles out of you with his charge attack. If you can brave this challenge and defeat the boss, you'll unlock a special calling card. New leaderboard events will let you test your undead-slaying prowess against other Black Ops 6 players and earn special rewards for doing so. Everyone gets something, but the top players will unlock exclusive items for stacking up zombie eliminations. The Grief mode is getting tweaked. Now, you can inflict more punishing effects on enemy players. Revive-based GobbleGums are outright banned, and zombies spawn faster after a zone is captured on the map. Completing Grief matches also guarantees you'll earn a Whimsical-tier GobbleGum, which is a fun little quality-of-life update. Warzone A cel-shaded variant of Rebirth Island will be available to play alongside the multiplayer maps during the CODtoons event. Resurgence Casual and Havoc Amped are new game modes you'll be able to queue for. Havoc Amped lets you drop in with their full loadout in quick 15-minute long matches that ramp up as you unlock special powers when the circle closes. Players will now be able to call in a care package outside of the Clash game mode to earn new gameplay items , the Hand Cannon and Door Barricade. The Loot Master perk is the next way you can augment your Warzone loadout. It's a simple perk, letting you spawn more loot from supply caches. The Search and Destroy contract is a new way to get discounts at buy stations -- if you can hold off against enemy squads for long enough to set off a bomb. Black Ops 6 Season 4 Reloaded will be released for free on July 2 for PlayStation, Xbox and PC. If you want to keep an eye on when we'll get a double XP weekend in Season 4 Reloaded, keep up with our coverage here.
