The Pakistan Cricket Board faces a dilemma regarding the release of interim red-ball coach
Azhar Mahmood
, a former Test all-rounder, due to contractual obligations established by previous management.
The contract stipulates that early termination would require the PCB to pay six months' compensation, amounting to PKR 450 million (USD 160,000).
"Which is why the PCB recently named him as interim head coach of the national red-ball team until his contract expires next year in April-May," the insider told PTI.
Azhar Mahmood currently receives a monthly salary of approximately PKR 7.5 million from the PCB.
"The problem arose when Mike Hesson, the recently-appointed white-ball head coach made it clear he would have his own support staff and Azhar was not among his selections."
"This left the PCB with a major problem of how to utilise Azhar's expertise to justify paying him such a handsome salary, as even if they wanted they couldn't release him without the six months of compensation," the insider added.
Poll
Do you think Azhar Mahmood's coaching style is effective for the national team?
Yes, very effective
No, not effective
Unsure
The situation has become complex as Azhar expresses dissatisfaction with the board's operations. Despite his interest in working with the national junior team, he has encountered opposition from PCB insiders.
"(Former pacer)
Aaqib Javed
, who is now a selector and head of the national cricket academy and close to the board chairman, is not impressed with his (Azhar's) coaching style. But to justify his contract for the time being, they have named him as interim head coach of the Test side."
Azhar has extensive experience with the Pakistan senior teams, having served in various coaching roles including assistant and bowling coach over the years.
The PCB has previously faced similar financial obligations when terminating contracts of other cricket personalities. This included releasing Waqar Younis, Saqlain Mushtaq, Misbah ul Haq, and Sarfaraz Ahmed from their roles as mentors in the Champions Cup events, which were discontinued after one season.

Land pooling scheme: Farmers to get Rs 1 lakh per acre until land is developed

Chandigarh, Jul 21 (PTI) Farmers will initially receive Rs 50,000 per acre along with the letter of intent (LOI) within 21 days of applying for the land-pooling scheme, said Punjab Cabinet Minister Hardeep Singh Mundian on Monday. He further said the amount of Rs 50,000 will be hiked to Rs 1 lakh per acre when the government takes over the possession of the land. Mundian also said there will be a 10 per cent hike per annum until the land development is complete. The housing and urban development minister held deliberations with the farmers of 164 villages regarding the land-pooling scheme here to get their feedback and address their concerns related to the scheme. Mundian said farmers who opt for the land-pooling scheme can continue farming on the land until the development work on the land starts. The minister said farmers will get the LOI within 21 days of applying for the scheme. The day the government takes possession of the land, the amount of Rs 1 lakh per acre per annum will be given and if the government takes two or three years in land development, there will be a 10 per cent annual increase in the lease amount, he said. The AAP government has been facing flak from the opposition parties which dubbed the land-pooling policy a 'looting" scheme to 'rob" farmers of their land. SBI raises Rs 25,000 Cr via share sale, to use proceeds for loan growth

New Delhi, Jul 21 (PTI) The State Bank of India (SBI) said on Monday that it has raised Rs 25,000 crore through Qualified Institutional Placement (QIP) to fund business growth. The committee of directors, at its meeting held on Monday, approved the closure of the issue pursuant to the receipt of application forms and the funds in the escrow account from the eligible Qualified Institutional Buyers (QIBs) in accordance with the terms of the issue, the SBI said in a regulatory filing. The meeting also approved the allocation of 30,59,97,552 equity shares at an issue price of Rs 817 per share of a face value of Re 1 each, including a premium of Rs 816 apiece, it said. The panel also finalised the allocation note to be sent to the eligible QIBs, intimating them of the allocation of equity shares pursuant to the issue. Later, the SBI in a statement said the QIP of its equity shares has raised Rs 25,000 crore — the largest QIP ever executed in the capital markets. The book received a robust demand and was oversubscribed four-and-a-half times, reflecting strong investor confidence in the SBI's strategy and the outlook for India's banking sector, it said. Foreign investors accounted for 64.3 per cent of total demand, underscoring the attractiveness of India's growth story, it said, adding that marquee long-term investors received 88 per cent of the final allocation, including 24 per cent of the issue size placed with foreign long-term investors. SBI Chairman C S Setty said 'this landmark equity raise is a vote of confidence in SBI's solid fundamentals, prudent risk management and digital-first growth agenda. We are grateful to both domestic and international investors for their overwhelming support, which also speaks volumes about the current strength and future potential of the Indian economy." The capital will augment the SBI's CET-1 buffer (it will improve to 11.5 per cent from 10.81 per cent as on March 31) and support calibrated credit growth across the retail, MSME and corporate segments, it added. In a separate filing, the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) said it has increased shareholding in the SBI's equity shares from 81,46,59,869 to 87,58,59,380, that is, 9.21 per cent to 9.49 per cent of the paid-up capital of the bank. This was done through the QIP and the shares would be credited on July 23. The fundraising of up to USD 3 billion (about Rs 25,000 crore) through private placement in FY26 was approved by the SBI's central board in May. Thereafter, the shareholders cleared the same in June. The SBI had last raised Rs 15,000 crore in 2017-18 through the QIP route. Besides, the lender announced that it received a board approval to raise up to Rs 20,000 crore through additional tier-1 and tier-2 bonds in FY26. For the entire 2024-25 financial year, the SBI reported a 16-per cent increase in standalone profit to Rs 70,901 crore against Rs 61,077 crore in the previous year. The bank's board has declared a dividend of Rs 15.9 per equity share for FY25.
