Harris-Walz campaign may have been targeted by iPhone hackers, cybersecurity firm says
One of the few companies to specialize in iPhone cybersecurity said in a report Thursday that it has uncovered evidence in a handful of mobile phones of a potential hacking campaign targeting five high-profile Americans in media, artificial intelligence and politics, including former members of Kamala Harris' presidential campaign.
The preliminary research, conducted by the cybersecurity firm iVerify, includes a 'significant amount of circumstantial evidence,' iVerify CEO Rocky Cole said. Apple, the maker of the iPhone, pushed back on the findings.
But Cole said the report was worth publishing for use by the cybersecurity research community. Apple's reputation is sterling among security professionals, and if it is confirmed a hack occurred, it would be a significant development in the cybersecurity industry.
IVerify has not identified who may be behind the potential hacking operation, but believes the targets and technical sophistication suggest a capable spy agency may have been involved.
Two people familiar with the investigation told NBC News that former members of the Harris-Walz campaign were some of the people iVerify believes were targeted. It's not clear what initially set off the investigation.
IVerify said that in addition to the Americans who were targeted, a European government official's iPhone had indications of remote tampering. It appears that last year, a hacker remotely and secretly installed a type of invasive, malicious program known as spyware to snoop on those users without their knowledge, iVerify said. Out of nearly 50,000 phones that iVerify analyzed, it found only six — all belonging to high-profile people who would be potential targets for an espionage campaign — that showed evidence of exploitation.
Apple disputed iVerify's conclusion that its evidence is a strong indication that iPhones were hacked.
'We've thoroughly analyzed the information provided by iVerify, and strongly disagree with the claims of a targeted attack against our users. Based on field data from our devices, this report points to a conventional software bug that we identified and fixed in iOS 18.3,' Ivan Krstić, the head of Apple Security Engineering and Architecture, said in an emailed statement.
Apple is 'not currently aware of any credible indication that the bug points to an exploitation attempt or active attack,' Krstić said.
Cole, iVerify's CEO, responded in a statement: 'In light of the recent public conversation around mobile security, there is ample evidence in the report worth sharing with the research community. We've never claimed there is a smoking gun here, only a significant amount of circumstantial evidence.'
iVerify's report makes it clear it did not directly catch malicious software that took over phones. Instead, its researchers found evidence that it had been installed, then deleted. The phones suspected of being hacked displayed suspicious activity in crash logs, the records a computer or a smartphone automatically writes when the operating system encounters an error or a program fails. That indicates tampering, the company said.
'We identified exceedingly rare crash logs that appeared exclusively on devices belonging to high-risk individuals including government officials, political campaign staff, journalists, and tech executives,' the report says. 'At least one affected European Union government official received an Apple Threat Notification approximately thirty days after we observed this crash on their device, and forensic examination of another device revealed signs of successful exploitation.'
Andrew Hoog, a co-founder of the mobile phone security company NowSecure, told NBC News that he found iVerify's 'analysis and conclusions credible and consistent with what we've observed over nearly a decade of mobile zero-click attacks.'
If a spyware campaign has been taking over high-profile Americans' phones, it would be a major escalation in the back-and-forth between cyberspies and the security engineers who try to stop them. The iPhone's cybersecurity is widely revered, and cybersecurity experts largely view iPhones as some of the most secure devices that are commercially available.
Apple routinely updates its operating system to fix flaws that hackers use to break in. But it has also designed the iPhone operating system to share very little information with cybersecurity researchers, far less than most other operating systems.
iVerify's claim comes in the context of other allegations that cyberspies snooped on the 2024 presidential campaigns, including the United States' accusing China of listening to both parties' presidential campaigns' phone calls and Iran of hacking Trump campaign emails and sending stolen information to Biden campaign officials. Under the Biden administration, the Justice Department charged three Iranians in connection with the operation in September.
Researchers have for years tracked governments' use of spyware to spy on journalists and activists in other countries. Politicians in France and Spain have been targeted by spyware, prompting national scandals. IVerify's report is the first major public claim of spyware's successfully breaking into iPhones tied to American phone numbers and high-profile Americans.
There is precedent for cyberspies' targeting major political campaigns. Last year, Microsoft, Google and several federal agencies said Chinese intelligence had hacked several major telecommunications companies, including AT&T and Verizon, and used that access to specifically spy on both the Trump and Harris campaigns' conversations.
The White House did not respond to a request for comment. The Trump campaign did not hire iVerify, so it does not have data from it to analyze. Sources who confirmed that members of the Harris-Walz campaign were among those whom iVerify has investigated as targets of the campaign did not identify those people.
iVerify also discovered a potential way hackers could have gotten in: a vulnerability in iMessage, the chat app that comes preloaded in Apple phones, that appears to be a zero-click vulnerability, meaning a hacker could exploit it without the user's even knowing. Apple has since patched the vulnerability.
Spyware can give remote hackers remarkable insight into their victims' personal messages and accounts. While confirmed instances are rare, it is the only proven tactic for hackers to reliably bypass the major privacy protections available for commercial phones, like the encrypted messaging app Signal. A hacker who successfully deploys spyware on politicians' phones, for instance, could read all their Signal chats, track their browsing histories, listen to their phone calls and even turn the phones into covert listening devices to spy on conversations while they are in the targets' pockets.
By giving a hacker remote access to a phone, spyware goes beyond even the Salt Typhoon espionage campaign, in which the United States accused China last year of hacking AT&T and Verizon to intercept phone calls and text messages as they traveled from one person to another — including targeting the messages of both the Trump-Vance and Harris-Walz campaigns.
The most commonly identified spyware in such cases is designed by the Israeli company NSO Group, which is sanctioned by the United States and has long claimed its products cannot be used to hack phones with American numbers. An NSO Group spokesperson told NBC News it was not involved in the incidents iVerify's research identified.
American diplomats and embassy workers abroad have also been infected with NSO spyware, according to the Biden White House, but evidence that such technology had targeted a U.S. presidential campaign or other high-profile Americans in the United States has never been previously reported.
'I think it illustrates that mobile compromise is real, not academic or hypothetical, and it's happening here in the United States in a systematic way,' said Cole, iVerify's CEO. He declined to specify the identities of the five people whose phones exhibited signs of having been targeted with spyware, except to say that they are all Americans who work in politics, media and artificial intelligence and that all would be of interest to a foreign intelligence service.
The fact that sophisticated phone spyware is becoming the most reliable way to read a person's otherwise secure messages makes it an obvious tactic for spy agencies, despite its technical difficulty, said Patrick Arvidson, a National Security Agency veteran who worked on mobile phone security at the agency, who viewed iVerify's report before it was published.
'I think that you're going to see in the coming year, two years, three years, more and more of these kinds of mass-scale incidents,' he said.

Google kills its Keep app on Apple Watch
The Google graveyard has claimed another victim: the company has killed the Apple Watch version of its Keep app. While the note-taking app is still available for iPhone and iPad, the 2.2025.26200 Google Keep App Store update released on Monday has removed watchOS support, bringing the total number of Google apps for Apple Watch back down to three. This sours some hope that Google would expand its watchOS app offerings after quietly rolling out a new native Google Calendar app for Apple Watch yesterday, having initially pulled several Google apps from the platform in 2017. The Google Keep app was introduced to watchOS in 2019 but has largely been neglected since, lacking any meaningful updates. Now, Google Calendar, Maps, and YouTube Music are all that remain, with the latter two also in need of modernization. While outdated, Keep was still functional on Apple Watch, providing a convenient way for users to quickly create lists or jot down information on the go. There doesn't appear to be a notable third-party alternative on watchOS to replace it. Its removal confirms several reports made by Keep users on Reddit last month, who said Google had notified them that 'the watch app would be deprecated soon.' We have reached out to Google to clarify why the app was removed. Keep is still available for smartwatches running on Google's own Wear OS platform. That's unlikely to be of any comfort to Apple Watch users who are disrupted by the removal, however; they will need to wait until Apple brings a native version of the Notes app to watchOS 26 this fall.

But you get what you pay for, and at $400, I'd argue you get good bang for your buck. But if you want to clean up a photo or get quick and detailed information about something on your screen, AI is at your fingertips. Abrar Al-Heeti/CNET My experience with the Galaxy A36 One of the Galaxy A36's biggest flexes is its 5,000-mAh battery, which is paired with 45-watt fast charging. That places it on par with the $1,000 Galaxy S25 Plus, which also includes 45-watt fast charging and a slightly smaller 4,900-mAh battery. There's a charging cable in the A36's box, but no power brick. Still, the baseline S25 and S25 Plus benefit from their more power-efficient Snapdragon 8 Elite chip, while the A36 has a Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 processor, which is geared toward midrange phones. The battery on the more affordable device still packs plenty of power, though. In CNET's 45-minute endurance test, which involves a combination of streaming, scrolling through social media, joining a video call and playing games, the A36's battery dropped from full to 89%. By comparison, the S25 dropped from full to 93% and the S25 Plus dropped to 94%. And in a longer, three-hour streaming test over Wi-Fi, in which I watched a YouTube video in full-screen mode at full brightness, the A36 dropped from 100% to 84%. Meanwhile, the S25 dropped to 85%, and the S25 Plus reached 86%, so the A36, impressively, isn't so far behind its pricier counterparts. In a 30-minute charging test, the A36's battery hit 31% and it reached full in over an hour and a half. There are other moments when I was reminded that this is a midrange phone, like the slight lag when going from portrait to landscape mode while watching a YouTube video or the fact that it takes about a second to launch the camera. Oftentimes, when unlocking the phone after a few hours of inactivity, it takes a moment for the display to light up after pressing the power button. But nothing stands out as a major issue or red flag. The Galaxy A36 5G costs $400. Samsung Galaxy A36 look and feel Perhaps my favorite thing about the A36 is how it looks. The iridescent lavender backing is so striking that I often find myself staring at it, mesmerized, as it catches the light. (It also makes me wish premium phones came in more playful colors.) If you want something a bit more subtle, the A36 also comes in black. Turning to the screen, the bezels are quite obvious, but they're thinner than the ones on last year's A35, which bumps that display size to 6.7 inches, versus 6.6 inches. A 120Hz refresh rate makes scrolling through social media apps and streaming videos enjoyable; I often forgot I was using a midrange phone because there weren't any glaring differences. The 1,900 nits of peak brightness made looking at the screen easy, even under the unforgiving Midwest summer sun. Both the front and back of the phone feature Corning's Gorilla Glass Victus Plus, which makes the A36 feel nice and sturdy -- and also makes me feel better about using it without a case (as does the relatively low price tag). It has an IP67 rating for dust and water resistance, meaning it can withstand being submerged under 1 meter (or 3 feet) of water for up to 30 minutes, so I don't have to be too nervous about bringing it to the beach or simply having it in the vicinity of a cup of water I'm likely to spill. Galaxy A36 camera A phone's camera tends to be the most important aspect to me (and I'm not alone). The A36 has a 50-megapixel wide, 8-megapixel ultrawide and 5-megapixel macro camera, as well as a 12-megapixel selfie camera. The A36 portrays the range of colors in this flower bed, with a slightly more subdued overtone. The AI market is growing, and as the dominant chip company, Nvidia is leading the way. Amazon's AI opportunities extend far beyond the cloud. 10 stocks we like better than Nvidia › At this point, it seems highly likely that artificial intelligence (AI) is on track to be the most impactful new technology since the internet. While the progression of the tech trend will certainly bring some twists and turns for investors, there's a good chance that the AI revolution is still in relatively early innings. Companies with heavy exposure to AI have been some of the market's best performers in recent years and helped push major indexes to new highs, and long-term investors still have opportunities to score wins with top players in the space. With that in mind, read on to see why two Motley Fool contributors think that two companies, in particular, with leading positions in AI will stand as the world's most valuable businesses five years from now. (Nvidia): Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) has rocketed to the point where it is now the world's most valuable company, passing Microsoft and Apple along the way. There's good reason to expect it will still be at the top of the podium five years from now. A big reason for expectation is that Nvidia is growing much faster than Microsoft and Apple, as well as the rest of the world's most valuable companies. Revenue increased 69% year over year in its fiscal 2026 first quarter (ended April 27), and management is guiding for a 50% increase in the second quarter. It has incredibly high gross margins, which came in at 71.3% in the first quarter without a one-time charge, and the net profit margin was 52% in the quarter. Nvidia has a massive opportunity over the next few years as AI gets incorporated more into what people do. It partners with most of the major AI companies, like Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) and Microsoft, and as they roll out their AI platforms, there's an even greater demand for Nvidia's products. The demand for data centers alone, which AI companies use to help power generative AI operations, is exploding. Nvidia's data center revenue set the pace for the company overall, increasing 73% year over year in the first quarter. According to Statista, the AI market is expected to increase at a compound annual growth rate of 26% over the next five years, surpassing $1 trillion by 2031. As the leader in the chip industry, with the most powerful products and as much as 95% of the market share, it will be one of the main beneficiaries of that growth. Nvidia keeps launching new and more powerful chips to handle the increasing demand and power load. It's still bringing out the Blackwell technology that it launched last year, and it's seeing a huge need for its products to drive the inference part of generative AI. Nvidia management says its GPUs are being incorporated into 100 of what it calls AI factories (AI-focused data centers) under development in the first quarter, double last year's number, and the number of graphics processing units powering each factory doubled as well. Management expects this segment of the business to continue growing at a rapid pace. It's now launching Blackwell Ultra, a more powerful tool for AI reasoning, which is the next step after inference and requires greater capacity. CEO Jensen Huang envisions a future not too far off where AI is used in everything we do, and Nvidia is going to play a huge role in that shift. Keith Noonan (Amazon): As the leading provider of cloud infrastructure services, Amazon stands to be a major beneficiary of the AI revolution. The development, launch, and scaling of artificial intelligence applications stands to be a powerful tailwind for the company's Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud business, and the Bedrock suite and other generative AI tools should help to encourage clients to continue building within its ecosystem. With AWS standing as Amazon's most profitable segment by far, AI-related sales for the segment should help to drive strong earnings growth over the next five years. Artificial intelligence being integrated into the company's fast-growing digital advertising business should also help to improve targeting and demand and create another positive catalyst for the company's bottom line. But there's an even bigger AI-related opportunity on the table -- and it could make Amazon the world's most valuable company within the next half-decade. Even though AWS generates most of Amazon's profits, the company's e-commerce business still accounts for the majority of its revenue. The catch is that e-commerce has historically been a relatively low-margin business. Due to the emphasis that Amazon has placed on expanding its retail sales base and the high operating costs involved with running the business, e-commerce accounts for a surprisingly small share of the company's profits despite the massive scale of the unit. That will likely change with time. With AI and robotics paving the way for warehouse and factory automation and potentially opening the door for a variety of autonomous delivery options, operating expenses for the e-commerce business are poised to fall substantially. There's admittedly a significant amount of guesswork involved in charting how quickly this transformation will take shape, but it's a trend that's worth betting on. Given the incredible sales base that Amazon has built for its online retail wing, margin improvements look poised to unlock billions of dollars in fresh net income for the business. If AI-driven robotics and automation initiatives start to accelerate substantially for the company over the next five years, the e-commerce side of the business will quickly command a much higher valuation premium. If so, Amazon has a clear path to being one of the world's most valuable companies.
