From ageing faster to early death, how nightmares really affect you according to a dream expert

Waking up in a cold sweat, with your heart pounding and your thoughts racing can be an unsettling experience. Anyone that has experienced regular nightmares will know that a night of bad dreams can rattle you for hours after you wake, leaving an eerie feeling that lingers well into the next day.
But it's not just your breakfast that a chaotic dream episode might ruin, as a major study has now linked a higher frequency of nightmares to faster biological ageing and earlier death in humans.
New findings from scientists at London's Imperial College reveal that adults who report weekly nightmares are more than three times likely to die before the age of 70, compared to those who rarely or never experience them.
As unpleasant as bad dreams can be, leading dream psychologist Ian Wallace believes that nightmares are nothing for us to fear. In fact, he reckons they hold vital clues to our deepest emotional states, allowing us to pinpoint anxieties and stresses in our waking life that we need to resolve.
We all know that dreaming about contentedly lazing on a desert island feels vastly different from being chased by a predator on the loose, but Wallace says that dreams and nightmares are cut from the same cerebral cloth.
"The reality is that a nightmare is still a dream. It's still part of the dreaming process, but it tends to be more vivid, intense, scary and emotional," he explains.
"The fundamental reason why we dream, neurologically speaking, is to process emotions. So if you are experiencing powerful, unresolved emotions in waking life, then you will typically generate more nightmares," he adds.
"People think that nightmares are happening to them, but in reality, you happen to the dream – and you create everything that you experience in it. In this way, a nightmare is just a sign of a powerful emotion that you are experiencing in waking life, that your brain is trying to resolve."
Ongoing chronic stress in waking life is one of the most common triggers for night terrors, but there are other factors at play too.
"Poor sleep quality is another key culprit," Wallace notes. "People often go on holiday and experience lots of nightmares, and that's usually because their brains are adjusting to a different time zone. They might also be drinking more alcohol, which can further disrupt sleep rhythms during the night."
If you often nod off on your commute and wake up in a panic, there's a reason why shorter naps can be more nightmarish than a lengthy sleep in bed.
"When we take a brief nap, we experience these things called 'hypnogogic hallucinations', which is when dream imagery comes into our mind, but we're not yet processing it in dream sleep," Wallace explains. "Those can be quite unsettling and a bit nightmarish feeling, as we're essentially not tipping over into a deeper type of rest.'
Existing unresolved trauma, substance abuse and certain medications, such as antidepressants and beta-blockers, can also trigger a higher frequency of nightmares.
Wallace says it's not cheese itself, but instead the effect certain foods can have on the body that can cause strange dreams and nightmares.
"The more digestible a food, the more relaxed your body will be when you are asleep," he explains. "Like most other fatty foods, cheese takes quite a bit of effort to digest so it causes our sleep to be restless, making us more likely to drift in and out of wakefulness.
"This makes us far more aware of our dream content and, because our body isn't fully relaxed, our dream content is often less than relaxing as well. Other foods, such as hot curries or anything particularly spicy, can also cause similar levels of restlessness, as will any heavy meal eaten just before you go to sleep."
Not according to Wallace. He sees nightmares as a symptom of chronic stress, rather than the cause.
"If you have unresolved emotions or you're physically tense in some way, then I would imagine that could lead to acceleration in the ageing process, as found in the new research from Imperial College," he notes.
As studies have previously revealed, chronic stress can have a seriously negative effect on our health, leading to high blood pressure, a weakened immune system, digestive problems and depression.
"But this is why nightmares can actually be useful experiences," Wallace remarks, "as they're your brain alerting you to the fact you're stressed and that you need to take action to resolve it.
"What people always say about nightmares is that they feel out of control," he continues. "And if you're in a place where you can't manage your emotions in waking life, you're likely to feel that same helplessness in dreams."
Psychologists like Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung have long theorised that the symbols in our dreams hold deeper meaning, but Wallace suggests we should analyse them with more of an abstract lens.
"People tend to take dream imagery quite literally, but because it's imaginal, it's more like an analogy for something in waking life," he notes.
Dreaming about death doesn't mean someone will die. Instead, Wallace says, it often symbolises an ending of one way of life and the start of a new one.
"The death in your dream indicates that an aspect of your life that no longer serves you is being transformed in some way," he explains. "This transformation is often the result of a major change in your waking life where you have the opportunity to let go of old habits and welcome new ways of doing things into your life."
He says a death dream is "reassuring" as you are reaching the end of a particular period of activity in your life. "By releasing yourself from your past, you have the freedom to step into a new future," he adds.
Take nightmares about intruders, for instance. "If you dream about someone breaking into your house, you're not necessarily dreaming about a real break-in," Wallace says. "In dream language, the house often symbolises the self, because, just like us, it has an inside and an outside."
Burglars or attackers in this context can represent internalised fear or emotional violation. "Dreaming of someone entering your home could reflect a sense of being emotionally intruded upon or feeling that your boundaries are being crossed in real life," explains Wallace.
Being chased is another common scenario that tends to plague our sleep, he says. "If you're having a nightmare where you're being followed, it usually means there's something you're pursuing in waking life, like an ambition, a goal, something you're striving for. And the figure chasing you symbolises the challenge or pressure you're personally feeling in that pursuit."
Finally, the classic nightmare scenario of your teeth falling out might not necessarily mean you've been neglecting the dentist. "In waking life, you tend to show your teeth in two key situations: when you're smiling and feeling confident, or when you're being assertive, like a snarl," Wallace says. "So teeth in dreams often represent personal power and confidence.
"When people describe this dream, they often say their teeth are 'crumbling', and that's the same language we use when confidence starts to collapse," he elaborates. "So, dreaming your teeth are falling out could reflect a fear of losing your ability to 'chew over' or handle a situation."

Tests 'closer to home' as new diagnostic centre opens

A £24.6 million community diagnostic centre has opened in Hinckley. The Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland Integrated Care Board (LLR ICB) says the centre is the first of it's kind in the county. The facility aims to offer patients a wide range of diagnostic tests closer to home, it says, to ease pressure on busy hospitals. Located next to the site of the former Hinckley and District Community Hospital in Mount Road, it will provide tests such as CT and MRI scans, X-rays and ultrasounds, phlebotomy, dermatology, audiology assessments and endoscopy. The centre is expected to undertake 70,000 tests this year, increasing to more than 80,000 next year, the LLR ICB said. Ros Chadwin, 52, from Burbage in Leicestershire, said she was able to have an X-ray in her lunch break after the centre opened on Friday. "I was able to nip out and have it done, and nip back. She added: "I've even got time to take the dog for a walk!" Judith Spiers, head of nursing for community hospitals in Leicester, said: "The patients won't need to travel to the main hospitals, which takes pressure off the roads and the parking, but also it takes pressure off those sites so we can do the acute care there and the diagnostics can be done in centres like this." Helen Hendley, director of planned care for LLR ICB, said: "It's going to make such a difference to the local area." "We have made such inroads with our long waits for patients across the patch, but we know if we can get our diagnostics tests in quicker, we can then get to a treatment plan faster too." Officially opening the centre was Conservative MP for Hinckley and Bosworth, Dr Luke Evans. He said: "The next step is the £10 million day case unit over the road that we are working on, so that people can have their operations done here as well. I found a bacteria-eating virus in my loo - could it save your life?

I'm on the hunt for a microbial saviour – a type of virus that can treat infections rather than cause them. We all know the viral bad guys – Covid, flu, norovirus, herpes, chicken pox, measles… the list goes on. But there's a type of virus that's not interested in infiltrating our bodies, instead it preys on bacteria. They're known as bacteria eaters, or bacteriophage, or commonly as phage. Capturing them could give us new ways of treating infections, including superbugs that are becoming incurable. So, how to catch a killer? I've been promised it's surprisingly easy. The team at the Phage Collection Project sent me some vials to collect samples, along with a pair of gloves. All I need to do is hunt for some dirty water, the dirtier the better, dip the vials in and screw on the lid. I tried a couple of ponds, the juice from a worm-composting bin and then I needed my dirtiest sample. I didn't flush the toilet after a poo and left it for a couple of hours. I pop on a glove and hold my breath as I go in for the final sample. Strict hygiene instructions, including vigorous hand-washing, were followed, at all times. The vials were packaged up for collection and then three days later I headed off to the University of Southampton to see what was inside. "They were a bit dirty when I received them," phage scientist Michelle Lin tells me as we don our blue lab-coats and matching gloves to go into the Containment Level 2 microbiology laboratory. We grab my samples from the fridge, which look much clearer now they have been filtered of any… debris. "It's fine, it's needed," Michelle, who had the unpleasant job, reassures me. Filtering is the first step in looking for phage, next they get served dinner – a cocktail of yummy bacteria - to help them grow in number. Now comes the really cool bit – finding a useful phage. The scientists have been working with the local hospital to collect bacteria from patients with troublesome infections. Michelle grabs a petri dish that's growing bacteria from a patient with a painful, urinary tract infection that keeps coming back. And to my amazement – one of the phage I collected from my toilet was able to kill this infection in the lab. "The way to see that the phage has infected bacteria is you get these zones where the bacteria are not growing and that's because they've been killed by the phage," says Michelle. You can see the leopard print pattern in the petri dish where the phage have been making light work of a bacterial infection that modern medicine was struggling to shift. "As crazy as it sounds, well done to the toilet sample," says Michelle with great delight. And when I was offered the chance to name the phage, well of course it's the Gallagher-phage. "Sounds amazing to me," says Michelle. So far this is all good fun in the laboratory, but could my phage ever be given to a patient? "Yes and I hope so," says associate professor Dr Franklin Nobrega as we look at images of my phage captured with an electron microscope. "Your phage, already in just 24 hours, we were able to get in a high concentration and able to be a very good killer, which means this is very promising for patients, so thank you," said Dr Nobrega. Phage remind me of a moon lander – a big capsule on spindly legs – just instead of landing on the surface of the moon they use their legs to select their victim. They then hijack the bacteria and transform it into a mass-production factory for more phage, which burst out of their host, killing it in the process. There are pros and cons to phage. They reproduce as they go along so you don't need constant doses like you would with drugs. They are also very picky eaters. You need a precise match between phage and the strain of bacteria you're trying to treat whereas antibiotics tend to kill everything good and bad. So it is harder to find the right phage, but if you do it comes with fewer side effects. Dr Nobrega tells me infected wounds are a "very good application" for phage because you can apply them directly to the injury, but they can also be inhaled via a nebuliser to treat lung infections or to target urinary tract infections "which is our target currently". Phage science may sound new and exciting, but it is actually a century old idea stemming from the discoveries of Felix d'Hérelle and Frederick Twort in the 1910s. Bacteriophage therapy was a branch of medicine and the idea was compelling. Even as late as the 1940s there was an active pharmaceutical industry in western countries trying to produce phage-therapy to defeat bacterial infections. However, it was rapidly eclipsed by the wonder-drug of the 20th century. "Antibiotics were working so well that most people said 'why bother'," says Dr Nobrega. Work on phage therapy continued in places like Georgia and there are individual accounts of it working wonders; but there hasn't been the same depth of medical research and clinical trials as there have for drugs. But just as the initial success of antibiotics suppressed phage research, the failure of antibiotics is reigniting excitement at their potential. More than a million people a year are already dying from infections caused by microbes that are resistant to treatment – it's known as the "silent pandemic". By 2050, that figure is projected to reach 10 million a year. This "antibiotic apocalypse" would mean common infections could kill again and undermine modern medicine. The drugs are also used to make organ transplants, open surgery and chemotherapy possible. "The predictions around antibiotic resistance are very frightening, but the reality is we're seeing it now and it's only going to get worse," says Prof Paul Elkington, the director of the institute for medical innovation at the University of Southampton. He is also a doctor with a speciality in lung medicine and is already at the point where - after a year of treatment and turning to ever more toxic and less effective antibiotics - "in the end you have to have a conversation [and say] 'we can't treat this infection, we're really sorry'". He says we can't rely solely on antibiotics in the future and phage are a potential alternative. But he warns the steps needed to get from the laboratory and into patients are "uncharted". Things are changing. Phage therapy is available in the UK on compassionate grounds when other treatments have failed. And the drugs regulator – The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency – has published its first official rules to support the development of phage therapy. "If one looks 15-20 years into the future, with the emerging methodologies, it's going to be possible for them to be much more widely available and for doctors to prescribe phage instead of antibiotics for some infections," says Prof Elkington.
