USC, Texas A&M share NCAA track & field title after USF rallies to win 1,600 relay
The Trojans, who won the indoor title earlier this year but hadn't won an outdoor title in 49 years, and the Aggies, both finished with 41 points, one ahead of Arkansas.

That came after a late surge by the USF anchor to edge Texas A&M in the final race, winning in 3 minutes, 42 seconds. Arkansas was third with the Trojans a disappointing eighth to earn just one team point. The Aggies earned eight points in the relay — a win would have been worth 10 points — and the Razorbacks got six.
Arkansas protested after the race that a USF runner hindered a Razorback but the protest was denied. If successful, Texas A&M would have won the title and Arkansas and USC would have tied for second.
The women's title will be decided Saturday at Hayward Field on the Oregon campus.
Sam Whitmarsh of Texas A&M, runner-up a year ago, beat indoor champion Matthew Erickson of Oregon to capture the 800 in 1:45.86, the second-fastest in school history.

Jordan Anthony of Arkansas, the NCAA champion in the indoor 60, added an outdoor title, winning the 100 in 10.07 from Lane 9.
Ja'Kobe Tharp, who won the 60r hurdles at the indoor championships for Auburn, added the 110 hurdle title to his resume with a personal-best time of 13.05. Tharp ran the fifth-fastest time in NCAA history, only 0.07 off of Grant Holloway's record.
Auburn also won the 400 relay in a time of 38.33.
Samujel Ogazi of Alabama raced to a dominant win in the 400 with a time of 44.84, more than six-tenths faster than the runner-up. The sophomore, who made the Olympic finals in Paris, became the first Nigerian athlete to win the 400 NCAA title in 26 years.

James Corrigan of BYU, a 2024 Olympian, won the 3,000 steeplechase in 8:16.41, grabbing the lead at the last water jump. His time is the fourth fastest in college history.
Nathan Green of Washington, the 2023 champion, won the 1,500 meters in 3:47.26 with the top 11 finishing within 0.68 of Green.
Brian Masau on Oklahoma State added the outdoor title in the 5,000 to the indoor title he won earlier this year, finishing in 13:20.59.
Ezekiel Nathaniel of Baylor lowered his Nigerian record to 47.49 in the 400 hurdles, the second-fastest time in the world this year.
Carli Makarawu of Kentucky took the 400 in 19.84 seconds, a Zimbabwe national record, edging countryman Makanakaishe Charamba of Auburn, who ran 19.92.

Oklahoma's Ralford Mullings, who returned to the championship for the second time in his career, took the discus title by launching a meet-record and person-best 227 feet, 4 inches.
Brandon Green Jr. and Floyd Whitaker gave Oklahoma a 1-2 finish in the triple jump with Green soaring 55-2 to win by more than a foot. Green led from the first jump and had it wrapped up after five rounds and then had his best leap to end it.
Arvesta Troupe of Mississippi cleared 7-5 1/4 to win the high jump.

According to Simon Johnson, the majority of our players will only return from holiday two weeks before we start the season against Crystal Palace on Sunday 17th of August. Loanees the first to return Johnson quite reasonably expects that Jamie Gittens and Estevao Willian will start a little earlier, as they didn't make it as deep in the CWC as we did. Then there are others who weren't taken on the tour and have already returned to Cobham to start their preseason – but as Johnson points out: 'they are returning loanees who are expected to be sold.' 'Chelsea have just two friendlies, against Bayer Leverkusen and Milan, before their opening Premier League game versus Crystal Palace.' So for all the fun we had in the USA, we may pay the price in the early weeks of the season as we look to get up to speed and face teams who are a month ahead in terms of preparation. Don't be surprised by a few bad results, and a rather mixed up team in those early weeks as everyone plays catch up.

They say "keep your eye on the ball," but all eyes were on Cal Raleigh when the Mariner's faced off against the Yankees on Tuesday evening. The Yankees won the game 10-3, but Mariner's catcher Raleigh had an all-star moment of his own on live TV. Things briefly went pear-shaped for fans watching the regional sports channel YES Network on July 8 when broadcasters — and cameramen — focused in on Raleigh's butt. "They gave him the nickname 'Big Dumper' because he has a pretty large posterior," said longtime Yankees announcer Michael Kay. With a laugh, Kay goes further to explain the lore behind Raleigh's behind. "His former teammate Jarred Kelenic said he hated it," Kay says of the cheeky nickname, "then they're making t-shirts about it and then he did come around." By this time in the broadcast, the cameramen working the game managed to capture an extreme closeup of Raleigh's rear end. "I don't know if we need that, guys," Kay says to them before following up with an awe-struck, "goodness." While Raleigh may not have liked his nickname at first, he has since grown fond of the affectionate alias. "It gets the fans involved and they have fun with it," the Mariner's star told The Athletic in 2023, "and that's what it's all about." Raleigh's fans were happy to get behind the trend, making merchandise of their own to support the caked-up catcher. "In Seattle they sell number 29 jerseys with the name 'Big Dumper' on the back," said Kay in Tuesday's broadcast. Apparently those jerseys are quite popular in the rainy city. "You see more 'Big Dumper' jerseys than you do Raleigh jerseys," Raleigh told GQ Sports in June, "so they just sell them on the rack now." Bulls trade proposal sends Coby White to West contender for coveted 15.3 ppg forward
This offseason has been a quiet but wild ride for the Chicago Bulls. Over the past year, the Bulls' roster has changed dramatically. After finishing 2024 with a team built around the star duo of DeMar DeRozan and Zach LaVine, both of those wings have found themselves in Sacramento, with Chicago's youth movement taking over. This offseason has had plenty of twists and turns around the league, but the Bulls have mostly stayed out of the spotlight. However, as free agency has wound down, Chicago's lack of a deal with Josh Giddey has begun stealing headlines. Of course, the Bulls aren't the only team in that boat with a restricted free agent, and they could swoop in and make a deal with one of those other squads. As suggested by Bleacher Nation's Elias Schuster, the Bulls could make a deal for Jonathan Kuminga. A potential sign-and-trade could see Kuminga securing his desired contract while Chicago sends back Coby White on his $12.8 million deal. In the proposed trade, the Bulls would also get Trayce Jackson-Davis and a top-eight protected first-round pick. As Schuster mentioned, the Warriors simply need to get off of Kuminga before things get even worse in the Bay. While giving up Jackson-Davis and a future pick might not be ideal, getting back another proven scorer in White, who could be a perfect fit off the bench, would be hard for Golden State to turn down, especially at his salary. This deal won't necessarily solve all of the problems for either team, but it could be a step in the right direction for both franchises.
