Group linked to 10 shootings, $1 million in fraud, Tuscaloosa police say

Yahoo06-06-2025
Tuscaloosa law enforcement officials say they've linked a group of suspects to at least 10 shootings, including one homicide, and more than $1 million in financial fraud.
During a June 6 news conference, Capt. Jack Kennedy of the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit detailed the group's alleged crimes and the cooperation among law enforcement agencies that led to arrests in the more than yearlong investigation.
The group of at least 10 people was funded through credit and bank fraud in an extensive scheme that involved several bank tellers, according to Kennedy. Some of the suspects who were arrested are older than 16, but under the age of 18.
A grand jury has issued 75 indictments in connection with the group's alleged activities.

Law enforcement executed more than 60 subpoenas and search warrants as investigators worked to obtain evidence, Kennedy said, in a probe that began in January 2024.
The Violent Crimes Unit, a multi-agency task force that investigates violent crimes in Tuscaloosa County, worked closely with several state and local agencies in investigating what they called the 'criminal enterprise.'
Among those agencies were the Tuscaloosa Police Department, the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office, the Tuscaloosa County District Attorney's Office and the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences.
The crime scene units and the crime labs at TPD and TCSO collaborated during the probe. The cyber intelligence units at TPD and TCSO provided resources, such as video surveillance, cellphone and social media data extractions, financial links and detailed criminal histories.
The Violent Crimes Unit itself consists of investigators from the TCSO, TPD, the Northport Police Department and the UAPD.
Multiple federal law enforcement agencies, including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms as well as the Postal Inspectors Service, also played roles in the investigation.
The June 6 news conference was attended by Tuscaloosa County Sheriff Ron Abernathy, Tuscaloosa Police Department Chief Brent Blankley, Northport Police Department Chief Gerald Burton, UAP Department Chief John Hooks and Tuscaloosa County District Attorney Hays Webb.
Representatives of the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, the FBI and the U.S. Attorney's Office were also in attendance.

Randall County GOP chair arrested, faces election fraud charge

Randall County Republican Chairman Kelly Kenten Giles has been indicted on one count of election fraud related to the 2024 primary election, according to court records. A Randall County grand jury handed down the indictment June 25, alleging that Giles, in his official capacity as party chairman, falsely certified that his application and nominating petition were legally compliant when submitted to the Texas Secretary of State in December 2023. The certification allowed his name to appear on the April 2024 Republican primary ballot. Giles won 51% of the vote in that primary, securing another term as chairman. He was first elected to the position in May 2023. The charge is classified as a Class A misdemeanor, which can carry penalties of up to one year in jail and a $4,000 fine. Giles was booked into the Randall County Jail on July 7. No bond was required for his release. As of Tuesday, no court date had been set, and Giles was not available to comment on the charges. This is a developing story; more information will be added as it becomes available. Fox News' Kennedy Rips Newsom, Bass for Protecting ‘Felons and Rapists and Murderers'

Fox News commentator Kennedy on Tuesday skewered California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass for criticizing the Trump administration for using federal officers and members of the National Guard to crack down on people who are in the U.S. illegally. Kennedy said both politicians are looking to 'score cheap points' with their base, but by doing so, they end up siding with 'felons and rapists and murderers' who should be kicked out of the country. 'feel protective' of people who 'are in the country undocumented, who live in communities and work hard.' She added that 'there has to be a better way' of removing dangerous illegal immigrants than is currently underway. Still, she said the two politicians are failing the citizens of Los Angeles and California by failing to do anything about it, beyond criticizing Trump. 'What Karen Bass and Gavin Newsom are doubling down on is 'They're going to protect everybody' and within the 'everybody' could be some of the very worst of the worst,' Kennedy said. '[Bass and Newsom] have not listened to their constituents who want public safety, and who want felons and rapists and murderers — they want them out of their community.' To make that happen, Kennedy said 'that means you have to set your ego aside for a second and actually govern.' The former 'Friend or Foe?' host's comments came a day after federal officers and about 80 National Guard members were seen roaming MacArthur Park in L.A.; local station Fox 11 reported no arrests were made on Monday. Their appearance at MacArthur Park sparked criticism from Bass, who said it was 'absolutely outrageous' for immigration officers to be going through L.A. 'It looked like a city under siege. Under armed occupation,' Bass said during a press conference. 'To me, this is another example of the administration ratcheting up chaos. It's a political agenda of provoking fear and terror.' Newsom echoed Bass, saying on Monday that it was a 'disgrace' to see National Guard members used as 'political pawns' by the Trump administration. Kennedy, however, said politicians were criticizing the operation as a way to deflect from the fact that next to nothing has been rebuilt in the parts of L.A. that were devastated by wildfires in January. 'Yesterday was the six-month anniversary of the wildfires, and you have barely a handful of permits issued. You don't have any construction going on,' she said.
