Female director makes woke demand to ban all plays by white male writers for a year as 'big idea' to shape the future of theatre in Britain

Daily Mail24-04-2025
It's supposed to be a 'big idea' to shape the future of theatre in Britain.
But it may not go down so well with most of those who keep the art form afloat by buying tickets to see plays of their choice.
A director has proposed a year-long ban on staging the works of white male writers.
Such a ban would include everyone from Marlowe and Shakespeare to Ibsen and Pinter.
Katie Gilchrist, an American, is behind the controversial proposal which she will pitch at a theatre symposium next week.
It is one of six final suggestions which will be put to a vote of top theatre executives on April 30 at the Soho Place theatre in the West End.
Ms Gilchrist will be attending in person to put forward the measure, which is likely to be unpopular with many ordinary theatregoers and last night writer Patrick Kidd said: 'Well, it is an original idea, if a batty, sexist and divisive one. Art should offer opportunities without banning a group of writers.
'Perhaps she would also like to exclude white men from theatre audiences? I can't see executives going for this.'
Ms Gilchrist, who has directed regional iterations of Mamma Mia!, Steel Magnolias and Dial M For Murder, told the Mail: 'This idea is an invitation for us to critically examine whose voices dominate our stages and what it could mean to shift that balance… even for the historical equivalent of an exhale.' The aim of the competition at The Future of Theatre conference, organised by The Stage
newspaper, is to encourage 'big ideas to shape the future of theatre for the better' and with speakers 'striving to improve and innovate the theatre industry'.
Others which have made the final six include actor and director Rob Myles, who will suggest the 'devolution' of the National Theatre while another American, Catherine Russell, the general manager of New York's Theater Center, will propose the verbatim translation of live theatre into more than 60 different languages using AI.
Last year, former prime minister Rishi Sunak criticised West End theatres that hold 'Black Out' nights, arguing that the idea of black-only audiences for some nights of a theatrical production is 'wrong and divisive'.

Nicola Peltz in fresh new 'rift' with huge Hollywood A-lister amid bitter Beckhams feud

Nicola Peltz is believed to have fallen out with another A-lister she was close to until recently. Nicola Peltz's fans are convinced she is embroiled in another bitter feud with a huge Hollywood A-lister, outside of her ongoing fall out with the Beckham clan. The 30-year-old American actress is the wife of Brooklyn Beckham, who she married in 2022. ‌ Nicola and Brooklyn are currently in a rift with the aspiring chef's parents, David and Victoria, after snubbing the football star's 50th birthday celebrations in May. However, fans believe the billionaire heiress has now struck up a new rivalry with someone else who was once very close in her life. ‌ Nicola's Instagram followers were quick to notice that the actress did not wish singer Selena Gomez a Happy Birthday when she turned 33 on July 22. Selena also didn't include a snap of Nicola in her birthday upload on Instagram, which featured snaps of her fiancé Benny Blanco and BFF Taylor Swift. ‌ The two actresses have reportedly been good friends since 2022 with Nicola and Brooklyn even spending New Year's Eve 2023 with Selena in Mexico. Fans were quick to pick up on Nicola's silence as they left comments on one of her most recent posts. ‌ One read: "She is no longer friends with Selena?" A second also questioned: "No selena? I miss your friendship with Selena." A third replied: "Wondering that too as it's Selena's birthday and she usually posts for that, wall, stories or on Selena's wall." Brooklyn's rift with his family recently moved on to the next level after his younger brothers, Romeo and Cruz, reportedly 'blocked' him on Instagram. ‌ The brutal snub is believed to have taken place while the Peltz-Beckhams were sunning it up on holiday and sharing multiple loved up snaps online. Brooklyn has still kept the peace with his youngest sibling, Harper Seven, who recently turned 14. ‌ The youngest Beckham celebrated her birthday on July 10 and Brooklyn sent out a public message on his Instagram which said "Happy birthday Harper, we love u x", alongside a throwback snap of himself, Harper and Nicola. After seemingly making the first step of a truce in his family rift, his younger brother Romeo reportedly blocked both Nicola and Brooklyn, blindsiding the couple on their lavish holiday. Insiders told The Sun: 'They had no idea until they saw it online.' ‌ In addition to this, Romeo, 22, also posted a cryptic message about 'walking away' which has been interpreted as a dig at Brooklyn. Initial reports stated that the Peltz-Beckhams had unfollowed his siblings first but sources at The Sun have now claimed this wasn't the case. ‌ Someone close to the couple said: 'Brooklyn had no idea about any of this until he read about it online. 'It's possible Romeo and Cruz blocked them, which would make it appear as no longer following the brothers. 'They certainly didn't unfollow them or block them - they're as confused as anyone else. 'The first they heard about it was when it was being reported on.'

MOVIE REVIEW: We suffer frightening familiarity with horror 'The Ritual'

No emotional connection to cast and nothing on screen we haven't seen before in the possession-themed genre. Young (Dan Stevens' Father Joseph Steiger) and old (Al Pacino's Father Theophilus Riesinger) priests team up to save a possessed young girl (Abigail Cowen's Emma Schmidt) - so far, so The Exorcist. ‌ If only The Ritual was half as gripping, scary and engaging as that horror classic. ‌ Inexperienced director David Midell's film is set in 1928 but truthfully I kept forgetting this as there is so little separating it from dozens of other possession-themed outings. ‌ The main selling point of The Ritual for me was seeing Pacino make a mainstream comeback. Sadly, he looks and sounds worn out and bored - if you want to see what the legendary actor can really do in a religious horror flick check out his barnstorming turn in The Devil's Advocate instead. ‌ Midell co-wrote the script with Enrico Natale and it claims to be based on true events - 'one of the most documented possession cases in American history'. So little is done, though, to make you care about any of the characters and there is absolutely nothing here that we haven't seen on screen before. The most impressive thing about Midell's movie is that he attracted Pacino and Stevens to star in it. ‌ Stevens, in fairness, is the cast standout, with Father Steiger, having just suffered a personal tragedy, being conflicted with saving Emma and the drastic measures being taken to do so. As with any possession-afflicted victim on screen, Cowen's body is shaken and twisted from pillar to post but, as her plight is so familiar, the emotional connection just isn't there. Ashley Greene's ( Sister Rose) only purpose seems to be suffering physical abuse at the hands of Emma and all Patrick Fabian's ( Bishop Edwards) presence does is evoke memories of his role in the vastly superior The Last Exorcism. ‌ I really tried to give The Ritual the benefit of the doubt but as a horror fan who has been down this road so many times, I actually felt frustrated and fed up sitting through it. If you're new to the possession film world maybe give it a go; otherwise grab that holy water and crucifix to keep it at bay. ● Pop me an email at and I will pass on any movie or TV show recommendations you have to your fellow readers. *Don't miss the latest headlines from around Lanarkshire. Virgin River's Alexandra Breckenridge left 'baffled' as she issues stern warning to fans

Virgin River star Alexandra Breckenridge has been left 'baffled' after falling victim to a deepfake scam on social media Alexandra Breckenridge, famed for her role in the popular Netflix series Virgin River, has recently had to address another fraudulent social media scheme involving the show's main actors. ‌ Her colleague Martin Henderson has also found himself having to alert fans about fake Instagram profiles pretending to be him. ‌ Breckenridge took to her Instagram Stories this week to share a warning from a fan who noticed an AI-generated video using the actress' image. ‌ The deceptive video was apparently prompting viewers to sign into a Telegram account to get in touch with Henderson, and the fan encouraged others to report the bogus profile. "This video was created be AI. Don't be fooled!" the original message warned. "Alex will NEVER promote Martin's account", reports the Mirror US. ‌ "Martin only has one Instagram account. He will never contact his fans on any social media platform." An image from a 2023 video featuring Breckenridge was also shared, highlighting the source material used for the deepfake creation. Reacting to the scam, Breckenridge added her own words: "Wow, that's a trip. That's not me at all." ‌ She then uploaded a selfie showing her confusion and humorously commented on the deepfake's unexplained Australian twang. "That was my response to that, that's not me," she informed her 1.3 million followers. "I don't have an accent, as such. I am an American, I speak in an American accent. ‌ "Which could be anything from, like, Valley Girl, to, like, New York, I could be from Brooklyn? I could live down South." Watch Stranger Things on Netflix for free with Sky from £15 Sky Get the deal here Product Description ‌ Breckenridge adopted the tone of a motherly Southern woman, injecting humour into her response to the peculiar social media hoax. "There's so many accents in the US," she continued. "But this is how I sound, which is, I guess, just like a pretty normal American accent. Not me, AI! That was AI." Her video surfaced shortly after Henderson had to issue an alert to his followers about an imposter on social media who conned a fan out of a staggering $375,000 (£276,000). Fans can rest assured that they'll soon reconnect with the authentic celebrities, as Breckenridge and Henderson have wrapped up shooting their seventh season as Mel Monroe and Jack Sheridan, anticipated to be released later this year.
