Female director makes woke demand to ban all plays by white male writers for a year as 'big idea' to shape the future of theatre in Britain

Daily Mail24-04-2025
It's supposed to be a 'big idea' to shape the future of theatre in Britain.
But it may not go down so well with most of those who keep the art form afloat by buying tickets to see plays of their choice.
A director has proposed a year-long ban on staging the works of white male writers.
Such a ban would include everyone from Marlowe and Shakespeare to Ibsen and Pinter.
Katie Gilchrist, an American, is behind the controversial proposal which she will pitch at a theatre symposium next week.
It is one of six final suggestions which will be put to a vote of top theatre executives on April 30 at the Soho Place theatre in the West End.
Ms Gilchrist will be attending in person to put forward the measure, which is likely to be unpopular with many ordinary theatregoers and last night writer Patrick Kidd said: 'Well, it is an original idea, if a batty, sexist and divisive one. Art should offer opportunities without banning a group of writers.
'Perhaps she would also like to exclude white men from theatre audiences? I can't see executives going for this.'
Ms Gilchrist, who has directed regional iterations of Mamma Mia!, Steel Magnolias and Dial M For Murder, told the Mail: 'This idea is an invitation for us to critically examine whose voices dominate our stages and what it could mean to shift that balance… even for the historical equivalent of an exhale.' The aim of the competition at The Future of Theatre conference, organised by The Stage
newspaper, is to encourage 'big ideas to shape the future of theatre for the better' and with speakers 'striving to improve and innovate the theatre industry'.
Others which have made the final six include actor and director Rob Myles, who will suggest the 'devolution' of the National Theatre while another American, Catherine Russell, the general manager of New York's Theater Center, will propose the verbatim translation of live theatre into more than 60 different languages using AI.
Last year, former prime minister Rishi Sunak criticised West End theatres that hold 'Black Out' nights, arguing that the idea of black-only audiences for some nights of a theatrical production is 'wrong and divisive'.

Hulk Hogan's heartbreaking family feud between ex and daughter as he dies at 71

Hulk Hogan appeared to make a dig at the devastating family feud between his ex wife Linda and one of his daughters Brooke as he dies at the age of 71 Wrestler Hulk Hogan appeared to have taken a swipe at his family's long running feud before his death. The WWE icon died aged 71, with reports suggesting he had a cardiac arrest. ‌ Before his death, Hulk and his family were locked in a fallout which resulted in his daughter Brooke Hogan cutting off contact with both her parents. This was recently highlighted by his ex-wife Linda in an emotional video. ‌ Linda shared a tearful video on her social media in March, where she touched upon the family feud. She stated: "I'm okay with most things, but today, something hit. It's been 15 - or longer - years since I left Hulk Hogan and my family is in the worst mess. ‌ "Brooke doesn't talk to us. She's had twins. She got married, she didn't tell us... She had a huge fight with Terry. I don't know how that reflected onto me, but she cut me out too." Despite the feud, Linda insisted that Hulk wasn't bothered, sharing: "I have to be honest about what I went through in my marriage with Terry as Hulk Hogan and what it entailed, and what it has caused over the years.. ‌ "He marches on, like, 'Oh, I'm promoting my own beer, real American beer. Yeah, look at me.' He's such a hero, right? Not. I've given him more opportunities to come back and makeup the family. It's been 20 years and I'm still this sad. Somebody please explain that." In response to her mother's emotional video, Brooke issued a scathing statement, asserting that she has "completely separate reasons" for not reaching out to either of her parents. "There was a recent video posted by my Mother that was concerning enough for people to send to me, that has made me feel the need to address the tip of a very large iceberg that is my immediate family," she penned at the time. ‌ "What little I am addressing does not even scratch the surface of what l've dealt with my entire life. I will start by saying this video is mild compared to behaviour I have witnessed for the greater portion of my life. This also comes in addition to false claims that she's previously posted, then deleted. That being said, she has been through A LOT of trauma and pain, my heart breaks for her. You can't control how others treat you, but you can control how you treat others and cope with things." She continued: "I have completely separate reasons for going no contact with each of my parents. This decision was made based purely on how they have each dealt with me directly my entire life." ‌ While Hulk remained silent regarding the statements made by both Linda and Brooke, he did share a clip of himself and his new spouse Sky eating popcorn whilst staring wide-eyed at the camera. He captioned the post: "Getting ready for the new HH TV show coming soon!" Yet some followers branded the upload amid the ongoing drama as being in "poor taste" whilst another commented: "This is why no one likes Hogan. A real man would try and heal, not mock his family." A third added: "Classy that's your child," with a fourth responding: "You guys are acting like children."

Fans queue to sign book of condolence for ‘proud Brummie' Ozzy Osbourne

The book has been opened at the Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery, which is currently holding an exhibition about the late singer titled Ozzy Osbourne: Working Class Hero. Mourners also had the option to leave a voice note in any language they chose by speaking into a red phone. Osbourne was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2019 and died at the age of 76 on Tuesday morning, surrounded by his family. The news came a few weeks after he reunited with his Black Sabbath bandmates on July 5 to play a farewell gig at Villa Park – a stone's throw from where the band was formed in 1968. Tributes were led by his Black Sabbath bandmates, including Terence 'Geezer' Butler, Tony Iommi and Bill Ward, along with celebrity friends including Kiss star Gene Simmons and Queen guitarist Sir Brian May. Earlier on Thursday, Status Quo frontman Francis Rossi spoke on ITV's Good Morning Britain and described Osbourne as 'wild'. He said: 'He was a great young guy. And then obviously, American success got to him, I think. And it gets to a lot of us. You get carried away with all that stuff that one shouldn't. I did and I'm over it.' Osbourne was also described by the Lord mayor of Birmingham, Zafar Iqbal, as a 'proud Brummie' who helped put the city 'on the world map'. Mr Iqbal met the founding members of the heavy metal band, formed in the city in 1968, when they were presented with the freedom of Birmingham in June. He told the PA news agency: 'He (Osbourne) was very important and he was a proud Brummie. He loved the city. He will be much missed, I think, and he was loved by so many people in the city.' Other stars have also honoured the 'Prince of Darkness' by paying tribute to him during live concert performances, including Lady Gaga, Coldplay and Alice Cooper. In a statement shared on Instagram, Cooper said: 'He was and will continue to be a rock n roll legend. Rock n Roll is a family and a fraternity. When we lose one of our own it bleeds. I wish I would have gotten to know my brother Ozzy better.'

Antony Costa calls Mama Mia! The Party 'the best job I've had outside Blue'

Antony Costa leads the cast of Mamma Mia! The Party, starring as the owner of Nikos Taverna on the Greek island of Skopelos Antony Costa has branded his starring role in Mama Mia! The Party 'the best job outside of Blue I've ever had.' The boyband star, 44, is appearing as patriarch Nikos the co-owner of Nikos Taverna on the Greek Island of Skopelos in the hit show. ‌ Since opening in August 2019, Mamma Mia! The Party London has welcomed over 600,000 guests, delivered over 1500 performances, and has been visited by guests from 110 countries for an evening of dancing, dining and singing to some of ABBA's greatest hits. ‌ As the sun sets in Skopelos, guests take their seats at Nikos' family-run taverna where they enjoy a delicious four-course Greek feast, while an action-packed love story unfolds around them. ‌ Following the performance, which is filled with timeless ABBA anthems such as Mamma Mia, Dancing Queen and Waterloo, guests are encouraged to get up and sing and dance the night away as the taverna transforms into a glittering ABBA disco. "I absolutely love it because you just don't know what you are going to get from one night to the next," says Antony. Every audience is different. When you're in it, there's you can do other than just let go and enjoy yourself." ‌ Antony began entertaining crowds in the show in 2023 and said it was a no brainer to return. "When I got the call to come back I literally jumped at the chance. I was like, "Yep, I'm around Let's do it. Let's go!" The party also has the seal of approval from Abba royalty, including Björn Ulvaeus who helped mastermind the show. Antony says: "Bjorn's team had this idea of creating this immersive show because he said when you go and see Mama Mia! the West End show people are itching to get up and dance. You can't help it with Abba and that's where the idea for Mama Mia! The Party started," explains Antony. "There's something about ABBA songs that no matter how many times you've heard the songs, you still just want to get up and dance. I mean you look at the crowds we have and it's children with their parents, there's teenagers with their parents, adults with their mums and dads, older people just dancing and singing away. ‌ "It is a testament to Abba as a pop group, 50 years ago they came out with Waterloo and we're still belting it out," says the boyband star. As well as paying homage to one of the greatest pop groups of all time, Antony's role in the show also allows him to reconnect with his Greek roots. ‌ 'I based the character on my late grandfather, his mannerism and characteristics, and, yeah, it was it was a lovely part to sort of get my teeth into. I had to do my homework don't get me wrong, but it was easy preparation to do as it's not a character I didn't know," says Anthony. "It's about getting the little elements right like how he pronounced words and the broken-in English he spoke in. He came over from Cyprus as a young lad supporting his family, my dad and his and sisters." Antony gets so into character during his performance that he even refuses to acknowledge fans who mention his boyband background. "We had a guy in who had come down from up north and he was like, 'oh my God, I'm a massive Blue fan, and I'm seeing you guys in Manchester!', and I was like, 'Sorry, who are Blue? I have no idea what you're talking about.' He was very confused but while the show is on we are on the Greeks island of Skopelos where the Mamma Mia! films are filmed." The 02 venue is transformed so that as soon as audiences walk through the blue doors they immediately feel as though they've stepped foot in balmy Greece - with incredible attention to detail bringing the space alive - as well as the actors working their way through the tables. ‌ "It looks like a village I would have seen as a small boy," says Antony. "It still freaks me out to this day that I walk in every night, you know, and think this is my place of work." While Antony is having a ball every night, the immersive elements of the show have not been without their fair share of incidents. ‌ "I've tripped over, I've fallen, I've slipped - trust me I've done it all," laughs the star. "When something like that happens you've got to make it look as if it's happening here and now. Even though I've done hundreds of shows over the years, you've still got to make it as if it's that night is the only night. "If I trip over I pretend to have a go at the waiters because that's the sort of thing my character would do. If a drink spills we can make it work. It's all in jest. It's not real but it's a real for that moment. "When we hear a plate smash we all shout out 'Opa' which is you would do that in a Greek restaurant anyway. It keeps things authentic!" Antony has the seal of approval from his Greek family who have been to see the show four times. "They love it especially my dad, who came over from Cyprus in 1961. After my dad saw it he said, 'You based that on my dad didn't you?' It meant a lot that he noticed." Antony joined the boyband Blue, with members Lee Ryan, Simon Webbe and Duncan James, in 2000 and are celebrating their 25th Mia! The Party originally opened in Stockholm in January 2016. The O2 London arena tickets including admission, a four-course set meal and a welcome drink.
