Messi Suspended for Skipping All-Star Game

Daily Tribune2 days ago
Inter Miami star Lionel Messi has been suspended for one match by Major League Soccer after missing the 2025 MLS All-Star Game without prior league approval. Fellow teammate Jordi Alba received the same penalty.
Despite being named to the All-Star roster, neither player participated in Wednesday's event, and both were deemed fit to play. Per MLS rules, unexcused absences from the All-Star Game result in an automatic one-match suspension.
As a result, Messi will miss Inter Miami's match against Eastern Conference leaders FC Cincinnati on Saturday. The Argentine icon has been in top form this season with 18 goals, helping drive Inter Miami's playoff push.
"Per league rules, any player who does not participate in the All-Star Game without prior approval is ineligible to compete in their club's next match," MLS said in a statement.
MLS Commissioner Don Garber acknowledged the difficult nature of the decision, despite Messi's unparalleled impact on the league. "I know Lionel Messi loves this league, but we have a long-standing policy regarding All-Star participation, and we had to enforce it," Garber said.
The ruling sparked backlash from Inter Miami, particularly managing owner Jorge Mas, who called the policy "draconian" and said the suspension penalized fans, sponsors, and partners like Apple TV. He explained that the decision to rest Messi and Alba was made by the club in light of a demanding fixture schedule.
'Both players were extremely upset,' Mas said. 'I expressed our disagreement with the league's decision, but notwithstanding that, the decision is what it is.'
All-Star games are a hallmark of American sports culture but remain a controversial concept in soccer. Garber hinted at future revisions to the rule, stating, 'I'm committed to working with our players to determine how the rule should evolve.'
While Messi's absence from the pitch will be brief, the episode highlights the growing pains MLS faces as it balances American sports traditions with the realities of global football — and with managing its biggest-ever star.

Messi's Midfield Enforcer Joins Him in Miami

Inter Miami Sign Rodrigo De Paul from Atletico Inter Miami have strengthened their squad with the acquisition of Argentine midfielder Rodrigo De Paul from Atlético Madrid, reuniting the World Cup-winning engine with his longtime teammate and friend, Lionel Messi. De Paul, 31, joins the MLS side on loan through the 2025 season, with an option to buy that could extend his stay until 2029. Despite his pedigree, he will not occupy a designated player spot on the roster. The move adds another chapter to the Messi era at Inter Miami, bringing in one of his most trusted allies from Argentina's 2022 and 2024 Copa América and World Cup-winning squads. De Paul was widely regarded as Messi's midfield bodyguard, shielding the legend on the pitch while driving the team forward with relentless energy. 'Rodrigo is a winner who has conquered the world stage. His ambitions match ours at Inter Miami, and we are hungry to achieve these goals together,' said club co-owner Jorge Mas. With nearly 500 professional matches under his belt across spells with Racing Club, Valencia, Udinese, and Atlético Madrid, De Paul arrives with a wealth of experience—57 goals, 74 assists, and 78 international caps. 'He brings experience, passion and quality to our team and to our city,' said co-owner David Beckham. 'I'm excited to welcome another World Cup-winning player not just to Inter Miami, but also to MLS.' For De Paul, the move is about ambition as well as reunion: 'What brings me to Inter Miami is the desire to compete, win titles, to write the pages in the club's history,' he said. With Messi, Luis Suárez, Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets, and now De Paul in the squad, Inter Miami's Argentinian-Catalan core continues to grow, signaling the club's mission to become a global force in football.

'I'm really sad to have to miss the National Bank Open in Toronto,' Alcaraz said in a statement. I wish the event well and look forward to being back on the Canadian courts next year.' Alcaraz had his best Canada run in 2023, falling to American Tommy Paul in the quarter-finals. 'It's disappointing to lose a player of Carlos' quality, as we k n ow our fans were looking forward to watching him,' tournament director Karl Hale said. 'Although he has been on the scene for a while, he's still at the beginning of his career and there will be plenty of opportunities for Canadians to see him again in the future.' American Sebastian Korda, the world number 33 struggling with a leg injury, and Poland's 38th-ranked Hubert Hurkacz, fighting a knee injury, have also withdrawn.
