Acclaimed '90s Singer-Songwriter Makes Bold Political Statement With Surprise Album Release

The acclaimed singer-songwriter dropped a surprise release, Ben Folds Live with the National Symphony Orchestra, recorded at his sold-out concert at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., on Friday, July 4.

A few months after the concert, Folds publicly resigned from his position as the first-ever artistic advisor to the National Symphony Orchestra (NSO) following 's decision to take over the Kennedy Center.
Folds spent eight years as the National Symphony Orchestra's artistic advisor, but opted to resign at 1:59 p.m. ET on Feb. 12, 2023—exactly one minute after Trump's regime change at the Kennedy Center took place.
'I had my statement up by 2:01,' Folds said in an interview with , nationally syndicated radio host at WFPK-FM Louisville. 'The takeover was at 2. I wanted no part of what was coming.'
'We weren't using the orchestra as props,' Folds added. 'We were challenging them to bring new music to life, while giving the orchestra a one-size-fits-all role. Our experimentation was a beacon for other orchestras throughout the private sector.'
Ben Folds Live with the National Symphony Orchestra serves as a document of Folds' time at the Kennedy Center working with the National Symphony Orchestra and includes such old favorites as 'Still Fighting It,' reworked with a full orchestral introduction.
'It works because it's not pretending to be something else,' Folds said. 'It's using the orchestra as it should be used. To elevate, not decorate.'
The album includes a guest appearance by Folds' old friend on the duet 'You Don't Know Me,' as well as the song 'Capable of Anything,' with a bridge orchestrated by Jherek Bischoff, which Folds has called a warning shot.
'We're all capable of terrible things,' Folds said. 'But we're also capable of doing better. That's the choice.'
In the wake of what's happened at the Kennedy Center, Folds said Ben Folds Live with the National Symphony Orchestra takes on added weight and importance.'This album suddenly now feels much bigger,' Folds said. 'I knew we were making something special with the NSO. I didn't know it'd be a time capsule of the last moment before it all got torn down.
'I still believe there's more good than not,' he added. 'But you must work for it. You have to say something. Especially now.'
Folds announced the release of the album on Instagram, much to the support of his fans.
'You made the right choice at the right time. Until Trump is gone, the arts aren't safe. Can't wait to hear the new album!' one wrote.
However, some also questioned the move.
'Brother, I wish you well. But, this is a rather cliche move. Could have been a stronger and more effectual [sic] voice had you stayed. Now you're just another artist stomping off.'

Crowds fill Downtown Nashville for 'Let Freedom Sing' July 4th event with music, fireworks
Thousands of people braved temperatures in the 90s to flood the streets of Downtown Nashville in celebration of America's 249th birthday. The "Let Freedom Sing! Music City July 4th" event is produced by Music City Inc. and has provided fireworks and fun to the Middle Tennessee community for more than 40 years. The fireworks spectacular has regularly drawn more than 200,000 attendees with a record-breaking 355,000 in 2024. 'Welcome to Independence Day in Music City USA, where we let Freedom Sing,' Nashville Mayor Freddie O'Connell said. 'We're going to have a great show tonight!' The 2025 celebration featured an instrument petting zoo, food trucks and an array of interactive displays. In addition to the variety of activities offered to all ages, the event also featured a Sober Space. Unveiled at the 2024 New Year's Eve concert, the Sober Space offers a welcoming environment for individuals, families and allies of those in recovery from addiction and alcoholism. Prior to the fireworks, guests were able to enjoy a free concert from artists including award-winning guitarist, songwriter and bandleader Grace Bowers and The Hodge Podge and a headlining set from 14-time Grammy nominee Dierks Bentley. The fireworks show is set to start at 9:30 p.m. and plans call for it to feature eight pyrotechnicians firing close to 40,000 pounds of explosives. Accompanying the fireworks will be the Grammy Award-winning Nashville Symphony along with a special drone show presented by Crav'n Flavor. Viewing for the fireworks is set along the Cumberland River with an additional viewing on the Korean War Veterans Memorial Bridge. 'Everybody who's here, you have one year to learn an important word,' O'Connell said. 'The word is 'semiquincentennial' because next year is 250 years of America, and it'll be back bigger and better than ever here in Nashville.' In anticipation of next year's celebration, Music City Inc. has announced that Let Freedom Sing! 2026 will be a two-day event, with festivities on July 3 and 4. Macy's 4th of July fireworks show 2025 brings NYC spectators to tears as they ‘celebrate the spirit of America'
Independence Day, you're a firework. Thousands of spectators gathered across the Big Apple were awed at the patriotic pyrotechnic miracle of the 49th Annual Macy's 4th of July fireworks show — a spectacle that unleashed a flood of emotions Friday night. The celebration, which kicked off at 9:25 p.m., featured 80,000 shells launched in the night sky from four barges on the East River — including a ghost shell that rocketed 1,000 feet in the air — and an unprecedented art show projected on the majestic Brooklyn Bridge. 'Thank you, Macy's, every year for what you do. I'm crying. Yes. I'm crying. This is New York City.
