Claim That Malay Language Is Under Threat Merely Political Rhetoric
KUALA LUMPUR, June 6 (Bernama) -- Experts have described the allegation that the Malay language is being sidelined under the MADANI Government as unfounded and contradictory to the administration's ongoing efforts to strengthen the national language's status.
Universiti Malaya socio-political analyst Associate Professor Dr Awang Azman Awang Pawi views the MADANI Government as more progressive and consistent in promoting Malay as the primary medium of administration and national discourse, as enshrined in the Federal Constitution.
"The claim that the Malay language is losing its role is merely a political strategy," he said, commenting on a statement made yesterday by former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who alleged that the Malay language and the position of the Malays are facing mounting threats under the current government.
According to Awang Azman, the statement is also inconsistent with Dr Mahathir's administrative history, notably when he introduced the Teaching and Learning of Science and Mathematics in English (PPSMI) policy in 2003.
"The policy provoked an intense backlash, as many parties, including the Movement to Abolish PPSMI, criticised it for diminishing the Malay language as a medium of knowledge and education," he said.
Awang Azman stated that calls to unite the Malays must be accompanied by concrete actions that are consistent with the principles of justice, inclusivity, and respect for Malaysia's cultural and linguistic diversity.
Echoing this view, National Professors Council Fellow Prof Dr Azmi Hassan pointed out that this is not the first time Dr Mahathir has used the 'Malay issue' to advance his political objectives.
"There is no such thing as the Malay language being under threat. It is only a small minority who view Malay as unintellectual, but in reality, it is they who lack intelligence.
"The current situation is much more stable compared to when the ICERD issue (International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination) and the recognition of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court arose in 2018 during Tun Dr Mahathir's administration, which at that time sparked concern among the Malay community," he said.

To us, it means; 1) Your judgment is flawed and unreliable; 2) You don't understand your role, or you don't have the courage to advise the king on your choice. It's the prime minister who chooses the key people in his or her government, not the royals, as the royals in this country, according to the Federal Constitution, do not govern. Top appointments to the government are the PM's choices. As long as the choices are made according to the constitution, the king makes the PM's choices official. That's the meaning of the king acting on the advice of the PM. It takes a PM with a backbone, not a glib mouth, to advise the king on his role. Apparently, Anwar can't do the job. Anwar, do you think the people are fools, or do you think that power is in your hands and you will decide according to your own selfish agenda, just as you did in extending MACC Azam Baki's tenure not once but thrice? Remember, even the toughest and cruellest dictator has fallen, as they think that power is theirs to wield as they like. Remember Umno and jailed former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak. They thought that they were unbeatable as they had the finance, resources, and manpower. Look at where they stand today. Is it because it worked in your favour? Was it not a political move? Why were the others due for promotion made to wait? What about the inspector-general of police and his deputy? Why was the deputy not promoted to the next level? It is so clear to see that you are frightened of promoting decent and honest civil servants. Seriously, Anwar, stop taking the people for granted. Umno did, and they lost big - four states to the opposition. What will be PKR's position at the next election? Reduced to the level below MIC and MCA? Half full Cup: Let's face it, our PM does not welcome most of the people's opinions, especially the professional group and his supporters, because he feels he is now the maharaja of the day. In fact, he has even forgotten or refused to recognise who his supporters are for the past 20 over years. The fault lies in his supporters (especially the urban citizens). If we look at what he did when he was in Umno, he was a very racist leader, hence his meteoric rise to be the deputy president of Umno. He was almost on the verge of becoming the president (prime minister). Most of his reforms at the time were very much at the expense of a certain group of people. We have been badly mistaken, or maybe we have fooled ourselves. Has DAP also taken advantage of the people's foolishness to gain power and enjoys that power now? BetterMY: Thank you for shooting yourself in the foot once again! The rakyat is fully aware of your administration's tactics of only retaining those subservient to you. Where you should have retained talent, you let them go, and where you should have dispensed with them, you gleefully retained. We will keep this in mind when voting in the 16th general election. Mind you, we're not racist to completely dispel of BN and PN, there are good administrators there too. It's just a matter of ridding BN and PN of the extremist and corrupt voices. Once that is done, we'll have a credible alternative to your incompetent administration. We have given you an opportunity, and you squandered it. We have given you that opportunity despite your entitled attitude towards the top post since 1998. Your days at the administration are numbered, and you will soon join the one-term PM list. And before any ardent and blind supporters of Pakatan Harapan jump on this, please be known that I have voted for Harapan since GE10. Lawyers say farewell to retiring top judges in moving speeches
PUTRAJAYA: Several prominent lawyers took turns to wish Chief Justice Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat and Court of Appeal president Datuk Abang Iskandar Abang Hashim a happy retirement in an impromptu farewell as both the two top posts in judiciary will be vacated soon. Just after the proceedings of a case ended at the Federal Court, Malaysian Bar vice-president Anand Raj, spoke on behalf of the Malaysian Bar to express its appreciation and gratitude for Tengku Maimun's leadership since May 2019. Today is Tengku Maimun's last working day as she is celebrating her 66th birthday tomorrow and therefore, reaching the retirement age. 'As Yang Amat Arif steps down, you will leave behind a judiciary that is more accessible, efficient and technologically advanced than before, and more importantly you leave behind a principled leadership that has enhanced confidence in our judicial system,' he said here on Tuesday (July 1). Tengku Maimun was chairing a five-judge panel at the Federal Court which also included Abang Iskandar. Anand noted that Tengku Maimun was the first woman judge to be appointed as the CJ while Abang Iskandar was the first judge from Sabah and Sarawak to hold the Court of Appeal president (PCA) post. Abang Iskandar's last working day is tomorrow (July 2) as his birthday falls on July 3. Anand said the Malaysian Bar thanked both the CJ and the PCA for their integrity in their roles. 'The Malaysian Bar wishes to record its gratitude towards Yang Amat Arif-Yang Amat Arif and on behalf of the Bar and the entire legal community, we thank you for your 42 years of your exemplary leadership. You have served with honour, led with wisdom, and have inspired with your integrity. 'To both CJ and PCA, we wish you all the best and happy birthday,' he said. Earlier, senior lawyer Datuk Dr Gurdial Singh Nijar said in his speech that the judiciary's credibility has been restored under the leadership of Tengku Maimun. "It has reached a level on par with the best judiciary in the Commonwealth," he said. Gurdial said with Tengku Maimun's leadership, the judiciary was restored and the 'scars' during the lowest point in the 1988 judicial crisis were 'wiped away'. "Your vigorous defence of the judiciary in the last few months must be commended," he said. Meanwhile, lawyer Lim Wei Jiet said both Tengku Maimun and Abang Iskandar were inspirational to young lawyers, law students and civil society members. 'Your fidelity to the Federal Constitution, rule of law, judicial independence and separation of powers have certainly created a renaissance of sorts for the state of law in Malaysia,' he said. Tengku Maimun, who also spoke on behalf of Abang Iskandar, thanked the lawyers for their well wishes and the Malaysian Bar for their steadfast support of the judiciary. 'All the support given by everyone of you in the times of challenges we face, when the judiciary is under attack. We can say we have been defended by the Bar and several other bodies and individuals. For that, I'm grateful. "Thank you for all the kind wishes. We wish all members of the Bar all the best, may you succeed in all your endeavours. Thank you, court is adjourned,' she said.

RM100,000 allocation for 367 top SPM students in Kota Kinabalu: Chan

Kota Kinabalu: Kota Kinabalu MP Datuk Chan Foong Hing allocated over RM100,000, this year, to reward 367 high-achieving students who excelled in the 2024 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination. This marks the second consecutive year the Kota Kinabalu Parliamentary Office has hosted the 'Anugerah Kecemerlangan SPM Madani' awards ceremony, which celebrates academic excellence and encourages students to continue striving for success. Chan, who is also Deputy Minister of Plantation and Commodities, reaffirmed that quality education is a right for every student, regardless of race, religion or socioeconomic status. He underscored the Madani Government's commitment to ensuring equal access to education that can truly change lives and uplift communities. 'As Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has emphasised, quality education is the foundation of a Madani society. We must cultivate a generation that is not only knowledgeable but also morally grounded, in order to build an inclusive and competitive nation,' he said. 'As a member of the Madani administration, I fully support the Prime Minister's vision. We are committed to ensuring that no student is left behind – whether they come from B40 families, rural areas, or face physical and mental challenges.' The event was held at SJKC Chung Hwa Likas, last Saturday. Students who achieved between 6As and 11As received cash awards of RM250 to RM300 each. Among the recipients, 113 students scored 9As or above. Special awards were also presented for Best Male Student, Best Female Student, and Best Performing School. Notably, both the top male and female students were from Tshung Tsin Secondary School: Soh Yim Qin scored 10A+, while Mohammad Arif Mohammad Adam achieved 9A+ and 1A. Chan also welcomed the Madani Government's policy guaranteeing placement in the matriculation programme for all students who scored 10As and above in the 2024 SPM examination and applied for admission – regardless of race or background. He noted that this policy, introduced last year, reflects the government's commitment to fairness and equal opportunity in education. He added that the Kota Kinabalu Parliamentary Office will continue to work closely with the Sabah Education Department (PPD) and local schools to improve education infrastructure, provide support for at-risk students, and encourage greater involvement from the community and private sector in shaping the future of education. Last year, Chan allocated RM55,000 to reward 205 students in Kota Kinabalu who achieved excellent results in the 2023 SPM examination.
