Watch: Ben Stokes Down In Pain, Falls Flat On Ground After Siraj Hits Him

News182 days ago
Ben Stokes copped a painful blow on his box from a low-bouncing Siraj delivery on Day 4 at Lord's, briefly halting play as the England skipper lay in discomfort.
Ben Stokes had an awkward-yet-painful moment while batting against India in the second innings of the ongoing Lord's Test on Sunday. The England captain was dealing with India's aggression with the ball on day four when Siraj's length ball hit him straight on the box.
It was the final delivery of the 29 th over of England's second innings that gave a little jolt to Stokes. The ball didn't bounce as much as Stokes anticipated. Instead, it kept low and thudded into him. The England skipper soon lay flat on the ground in pain, taking a couple of minutes to compose himself.
Earlier, Siraj led a strong Indian pace attack on a challenging Lord's pitch, reducing England to 98 for four by lunch on day four of the third Test on Sunday. With the match evenly balanced, the intensity was evident from the first ball of the day.
Siraj, who excels under pressure, struck early from the Pavilion End, dismissing Ben Duckett with a sharp delivery. He then adjusted his line slightly to trap Ollie Pope, ending a seven-over spell with impressive figures of 2 for 11. The surface offered unpredictable bounce, especially from the Nursery End, where the ball sometimes kicked off a length, keeping the batters uneasy.
Jasprit Bumrah partnered with Siraj in another challenging spell, targeting Zak Crawley, who had narrowly survived a tough over on Saturday. Bumrah beat him with pace and bounce, with one ball hitting the bat handle, before Shubman Gill introduced Nitish Reddy into the attack. Reddy, continuing his dream debut, dismissed Crawley for the second time in the match. The England opener drove at a fuller ball but was brilliantly caught at gully by Yashasvi Jaiswal, who made up for his earlier fielding errors.
Harry Brook fought back with aggressive strokes, including two ramps and a six off Akash Deep. However, the Indian pacer maintained his focus, consistently targeting the stumps. His persistence paid off when Brook misjudged a sweep and was bowled, leaving England at 87 for four. At the break, Ben Stokes and Joe Root were working to steady the innings.

ENG vs IND, Lord's Test: A bail falls, and with it a brave resistance

There are finishes, and then there is Lord's on a fifth evening: shadows lengthening, tension thickening, history murmuring through the Pavilion's brickwork. On this stage, Ben Stokes's England seized a 2-1 lead in the Anderson–Tendulkar Trophy, but only after being made to squirm, sweat, and finally exhale — thanks to Ravindra Jadeja's monkish defiance. Chasing 193, India collapsed to 112 for eight. The margin suggests routine; the theatre suggested otherwise. Jadeja, almost immovable, stitched together two dogged partnerships — first with Jasprit Bumrah (5, 54b), then with Mohammed Siraj (4, 30b) — stretching more than 30 overs. That the target came within 30 spoke less to India's depth than to one man's refusal to budge. Jadeja's 61 from 181 was not an innings for highlight reels. But it was cricket at its rawest: attritional, methodical, and strangely beautiful. Stokes, of course, bowled. From the Nursery End, he wheeled away tirelessly, as though performing a rite. His three wickets will fill the scorebook, but it was his intent — to shoulder the burden alone — that defined him, again. And then — anticlimax. The end came not with a yorker splitting the stumps or a flying catch at slips. It came with a defensive prod, the sort one sees in coaching manuals. The ball trickled back toward the stumps — not fast, not vengeful, almost sheepish. It nudged the base, and after a moment's deliberation, one bail wobbled and fell, like an old general finally conceding defeat. The hand behind it was Shoaib Bashir's — called on after tea, finger strapped, series-ending injury looming. His ball to Siraj was functional, but its effect was terminal. His celebration was unfiltered joy, as though unaware that his moment had just entered the game's long memory. The scorebook will record it in four dry words: Siraj b Bashir 4. What it will not capture is the silence that fell across the Lord's balcony, the slow walk of Jadeja back to the dressing room, or the look on Stokes's face — half-proud, half-spent, as if he'd won a war he no longer wished to fight. ALSO READ: IND vs ENG, 3rd Test: England pips India to series lead despite Jadeja's lone battle There was, in the day's dying light, a faint echo of Cardiff in 2009, where Monty Panesar and James Anderson, faces blank and forward presses tighter still, stonewalled Australia for 69 deliveries to draw a Test. That too was less about heroism than refusal — less about the scoreboard than about two men, out of place and out of time, holding back the tide. India's Ravindra Jadeja reacts as he walks off the field after the team lost the third test cricket match against England, at the Lord's. | Photo Credit: R SENTHILKUMAR/PTI Jadeja and Siraj didn't quite get there. But in their obstinacy — in every leave, block, and inside edge — they reminded us that Test cricket still lives longest in these moments: neither victory nor collapse, but a quiet, stubborn contest with inevitability. Lord's will be hard to top — not merely for its climax, but for what it laid bare: that Test cricket's truth lies less in spectacle than in suspense, in slow turnings of fate rather than quick twists. At its best, it doesn't merely thrill — it lingers.

Liam Dawson replaces Shoaib Bashir as England announce squad against India for 4th Test at Old Trafford

The England Cricket Board (ECB) announced a 14-player England squad for the fourth Test against India (Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025) on Tuesday and has added off-spinner Liam Dawson in place of injured Shoaib Bashir. Dawson last played Test cricket for England in July 2017 and will be looking to make his comeback after eight long years. The 35-year-old has been a consistent performer for Hampshire over several years and was named PCA Player of the Year in 2023 and 2024, respectively. ECB also released pacers Sam Cook and Jamie Overton, both of whom have returned to their respective counties to play in the County Championship. Bashir was ruled out of the remainder of the England vs India Test series on Monday due to a finger fracture which he sustained during the third match at Lord's, which his side won to take a 2-1 lead. The 21-year-old is scheduled to go for surgery later this week, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) said. 'England men's spinner Shoaib Bashir has sustained a fracture to his left finger and has been ruled out of the remainder of the Rothesay Test series against India. He is scheduled to undergo surgery later this week. England will name their squad for the fourth Test at Emirates Old Trafford in the next couple of days,' the ECB said. Bashir sustained injury to his little finger of his left hand on the third day of the Lord's Test while bowling to Ravindra Jadeja, who hit a powerful low drive straight back to the bowler. He bowled just 5.5 overs in India's second innings, but had the honour of ending the visiting side's run chase of 193, scalping the wicket of last batter Mohammed Siraj as England notched a memorable 22-run win. English Men's national selector, Luke Wright, on the inclusion of Dawson, said, 'Liam Dawson deserves his call-up. He has been in outstanding form in the County Championship and consistently puts in strong performances for Hampshire.' The fourth Test will be played at Old Trafford in Manchester, starting from 23 July. Ben Stokes (c), Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, Jacob Bethell, Harry Brook, Brydon Carse, Zak Crawley, Liam Dawson, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Jamie Smith (wk), Josh Tongue, Chris Woakes.

England Bring In 35-Year-Old Veteran To Replace Injured Shoaib Bashir Vs India

England are reportedly set to call up 35-year-old Liam Dawson to replace injured Shoaib Bashir for the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Dawson last played a Test in 2017. England have called up 35-year-old Liam Dawson to replace injured off-spinner Shoaib Bashir for the remainder of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Dawson, who last played a Test in 2017 against South Africa, has been one of the most in-form spinners in the domestic County circuit for the past few years. He'll beat strong competition from the veteran spinner Jack Leach, and the likes of Rehan Ahmed, Will Jacks and even Jacob Bethell for the job. National Selector, Luke Wright, said: 'Liam Dawson deserves his call-up. He has been in outstanding form in the County Championship and consistently puts in strong performances for Hampshire." Dawson bowls slow left-arm spin and is more than handy as a number eight batter, and his arrival will certainly add more depth to the home side. He has played three Tests, six ODIs, and 14 T20Is for England so far. He was out of the international arena completely for the better part of the last two years and had not signed the central contract either, informing the England and Wales Cricket Board of his willingness to play the more lucrative franchise cricket around the world if he wasn't going to start for the national side. It was also one of the reason why he missed out on England's big tour of India early last year, where Bashir made his debut. 'Probably not now, no. Being honest, there's a few things that have happened over the last year. For me, probably Test cricket now is completely off the radar. But it is what it is, I'm 34 and I want to enjoy my cricket and try to win trophies towards the end of my career," Dawson told ESPNcricinfo in March 2024. Bashir fractured a finger in his left hand trying to stop a shot from India's Ravindra Jadeja at Lord's. He continued to field and bowl, though, and took the final wicket of the Test to seal the 22-run win for England. He'll now undergo surgery and won't be able to participate in the remaining two Tests of the series, the first of which will begin at Old Trafford on July 23. 'It is not good news," England captain Ben Stokes said after the match. 'It will be disappointing for us as a team and for him. It is a big shame but the courage that he showed to go out there and bat for us and be willing to sit there on the bench and wait for his moment to bowl, I think it proves how much it means to everyone who gets to put the shirt on. Not even a couple of breaks is going to stop anyone getting out there." Meanwhile, seam bowlers Sam Cook and Jamie Overton have returned to their respective counties. view comments First Published: July 15, 2025, 15:05 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
