Maharashtra news: Bank official steals gold worth ₹27 lakh in Thane, arrested by police
The accussed has been identified as 29-year-old Sachin Arun Kalan.
According to police, Sachin Arun Kalan, who works at a private bank in Ambernath East in the Thane district, was arrested on June 6 under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for criminal breach of trust and other offences.
'Between May and May 26, Kalan, as the bank's relationship executive, was handling gold loan cases. During this period, he took away gold ornaments worth ₹ 26.90 lakh that had been mortgaged by customers who had availed loans. A detailed probe is underway to cover all aspects of the crime,' a Shivaji Nagar police station official said, according to news agency PTI.
Further investigarion is underway into the matter.
A 29-year-old fisherman from Kerala has been arrested by the Delhi Police for allegedly duping a retired army colonel of over ₹ 18.8 lakh after promising high returns from foreign exchange (forex) investments, an official said on Saturday.
The accused, identified as Sreejith Rajendran, a resident of Azheekal in Kollam district of Kerala, was apprehended from his hometown, he said.
The police said Sreejith, who studied till Class 10 and is a fisherman by profession, was enticed into the racket by a friend who flaunted a lavish lifestyle funded through fraudulent means. Driven by greed and a desire for easy money, he became part of the syndicate.
Earlier this year, another accused, Sunil, from Jodhpur was arrested in connection with the same gang. The mastermind of the operation, Anandhu Lal from Kollam, is still at large, according to the police.
"The victim, a retired Colonel, was lured into the scam in December 2023 after receiving unsolicited messages and calls from a woman who identified herself as 'Cute Arvin Anghita'.
She convinced him of potential profits in the forex market and encouraged repeated investments," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Harsh Indora said.
Under the guise of high returns, the complainant was coaxed into transferring money in several instalments. When he sought to withdraw funds, he was told to make additional payments to process the withdrawal, he said, adding that eventually, a total of ₹ 18,80,818 was taken from him.

Hyderabad: A Visakhapatnam-based doctor was arrested by Gopalapuram police from Hyderabad's RGI Airport on Monday for her alleged involvement in the trafficking-cum-illegal surrogacy racket being probed by local police. Dr Vidyulatha is currently being interrogated by Gopalapuram police. Dr Vidyulatha along with four others including Dr Namratha and Kalyani were charged under BNS & Surrogacy (Regulation) Act, 2021.

Pune: Woman booked for 73-yr-old's death in road accident
The Pune city police have booked a woman in connection with the road accident of July 30, in which a senior citizen had died after coming under the woman's car's wheels after his two-wheeler skid over a pothole formed between the road and the paver block, near Rahul Hotel on the Nagras road in Aundh. A CCTV video of the accident had sent shock waves across the city. Police Havaldar Santoshkumar Chavan (45) lodged the first information report (FIR) in this case at the Chaturshringi police station on August 3. Police said a 73-year-old Jagannath Kashinath Kale, resident of Pinnac Gangotri society in Aundh, was going towards Bhale chowk via Nagras road on a two-wheeler on July 30. Around 1 pm, the two-wheeler lost balance after skidding on the pothole between the paving blocks and the road side. The impact was such that Kale collapsed on the road along with the two-wheeler and came under the front wheel of a car passing from his right side. Kale died in the incident. A CCTV video of the road mishap went viral on social media. The video shows that the car was not speeding and stopped at the spot immediately after the mishap. Meanwhile, as per the legal procedure an accidental death report was lodged at the Chaturshringi police station and a probe was launched to find out the cause behind the accident. Local residents have demanded action against the contractor and officials of Pune Municipal Corporation for not repairing the potholes and dangerous spots on the roads. But, in the FIR, the police have blamed the car driver, who is a woman who was returning home with her children. It is alleged in the FIR that the woman did not maintain sufficient distance between two vehicles while driving negligently on the road. Police have booked the woman under section 106, 324(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and sections of the Motor Vehicle Act. Police sub inspector Meera Chavan is investigating the case.

5 held for ‘honour killing' in Palamu
Daltonganj: Tarhassi Police arrested five named accused in a honour killing case on Monday. The arrested were identified as Upender Mahto, the father of the deceased Vibha Kumari (21), her mother, Kalavati Devi, besides uncles Janeshwar Mahto, Vimlesh Mahto, and Rakesh Mahto. Lesliganj SDPO Manoj Kumar Jha said, "All have been booked under Section 103 of the BNS." Tarhassi police station-in-charge Anand Ram said, "On Sunday, around 6.15 pm, we received a tip-off that two bodies were thrown into a well at Purni Tarya village. We retrieved the bodies from the well the same night. A post-mortem of the bodies was conducted at MMCH Daltonganj." Jay Prakash, brother of the deceased boy, lodged an FIR with the Tarhassi police station on Monday, naming the five persons. The deceased boy hailed from Bhandra village, while the girl belonged to Purni Tarya village. The two were in a relationship for a long time. The girl's family opposed their relationship and had even settled her marriage elsewhere, police said. SDPO Jha added, "On the intervening night of August 1/2, the girl's family allegedly tempted the boy to meet the girl. The five accused reportedly tortured them to death when he came." "We have recovered an iron rod and a lathi that were used to kill Vibha Kumari and her friend, Subhash Kumar alias Karo Singh (21) on the intervening night of August 1 and 2. The cell phone of Subhash has also been recovered," OC Ram said.
