This QB Just Dethroned Patrick Mahomes as NFL's Best, Says Top Analyst
One NFL analyst boldly declared that Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is no longer the bar other quarterbacks are trying to pass.

For the first five years of his career, few would argue that Mahomes was the top player at his position in the NFL. But over the last two years, Mahomes hasn't quite lived up to the critically high bar he set for himself.
Since becoming a starter in 2018, Mahomes often led the NFL in passing, averaging 4,791 yards, 38.2 touchdowns, and 9.6 interceptions per season with a passer rating of 106.2.
But in the last two seasons, his production was been down significantly, averaging just 4,055 yards, 26.5 touchdowns, and 12.5 interceptions per season with a passer rating of 93.1.
And with the number of top young quarterbacks growing — a list that includes Buffalo's Josh Allen, Baltimore's Lamar Jackson, Cincinnati's Joe Burrow, Houston's C.J. Stroud, Green Bay's Jordan Love, and San Francisco's Brock Purdy — fans probably expected Mahomes to lose his title as the NFL's best QB at some point.

The 33rd Team's Sam Monson believes that time is now, arguing that Allen, the reigning MVP, has surpassed Mahomes, a two-time MVP, as the best signal-caller in the league.

'I believe the best quarterback right now is Josh Allen,' Monson said. 'I think he's become the guy. Like, for years it was Patrick Mahomes. Brady, that generation — once they went, Mahomes took over. The start of Mahomes' career was absolutely mind-blowing; the last couple of years though, he's not been that guy and really it's been Josh Allen.
'I think you can make a case for a couple of other people, but Allen's combination of freakshow, wow plays, everything he can do with his arm, the cheat code that is his short-yardage ability, his athleticism, the fact that he basically does not take sacks—I mean, one of the lowest pressure-to-sack rates you're going to find anywhere—utterly absurd analytics numbers behind him as well. I think Allen's the guy right now.'

Allen is coming off arguably the best season of his career.

He racked up 4,262 total yards (3,731 passing, 531 rushing) and 40 total touchdowns (28 passing, 12 rushing) with a career-low six interceptions while leading the Bills to 13 wins (tying the franchise record) and falling just one win shy of the team's first Super Bowl appearance since 1994.
After adding a pair of former second-round picks in wide receivers Elijah Moore and Laviska Shenault, plus wideout Joshua Palmer, Allen enters 2025 with arguably the deepest WR room he's had in his seven-year career.

The 2024-25 season was not yet rock bottom for the Nets. That was a roster that still had quality players such as Cam Johnson and even D'Angelo Russell did some damage for them towards the end of the season. Cam Thomas should soon be brought back from restricted free agency, and Nicolas Claxton is still on the roster, but things are about to be very bleak, very fast for this Nets squad. Advertisement Gone is Johnson, and in is Michael Porter Jr., who will be tasked to take part in a 'take as many difficult, ill-advised shots as possible' competition alongside Thomas. Russell also bolted, signing with the Dallas Mavericks to be their new starting point guard. Terance Mann is in, and he has a history of being a solid role player on a winning team. Claxton remains. Ziaire Williams, Keon Johnson, and Jalen Wilson got plenty of reps last year. Day'Ron Sharpe and Noah Clowney are solid bench pieces. But a quick glance at the roster would suggest that this team may not win more than 15 games next season. This team is going to be horrendous. They have a million point guards from the 2025 NBA Draft who may not end up controlling the ball since Thomas and Porter are going to dominate possession, they don't have a star player who can make sense of this weird collection of talent, and to top it all off, they have such a logjam in seemingly every position that makes it difficult to project any potential breakout for anyone on this roster. There has to be another move that the Nets pull off to at least make the roster make more sense. Advertisement The Nets should just go for Jonathan Kuminga at this point Darren Yamashita-Imagn Images At this point, the Nets have to be aware that they're not going to win many ballgames next season. Head coach Jordi Fernandez cannot conjure enough magic for the team to be anything remotely close to being good for the upcoming campaign, so they might as well just grab the best assets they can and be the team that ends up snagging Jonathan Kuminga. Now, a team with Kuminga, Porter, and Thomas will make fans of free-flowing basketball with plenty of ball movement throw up. Everyone is just going to do their own thing, with Kuminga recklessly careening into multiple defenders, Porter jacking up contested threes on the move every chance he gets, and Thomas looking to take his defenders to school on every possession, and with no veteran point guard around to rein everyone in, it's going to be chaos for the Nets. Advertisement The Nets have their own 2026 first-round pick anyway, so it's not like there's a downside to Brooklyn going all-in on being a bad team. Kuminga, at best, would give the Nets two or three extra wins, which shouldn't matter when they're about to be in the running to be the worst team of all-time. Brooklyn can open up the cap space required to tender Kuminga an offer sheet, which would put pressure on the Golden State Warriors to either match that offer or engage with them on a sign-and-trade that would at least net the Dubs some assets for the former seventh overall pick. Acquiring Kuminga at least gives the Nets a 22-year-old forward who's shown flashes of being a 20-points per game scorer in this league, giving them a trade asset that they could then package with some draft capital and young players to acquire the next available star on the trade market. Everything is looking bleak for the Nets, unless their five first-round picks this year hit in a big way. So asset accumulation is what they must set their sights on, and Kuminga would immediately come in as one of their most valuable players — which is more of a commentary on how dire circumstances are for Brooklyn more so than Kuminga being valuable. Advertisement With increased opportunity in Brooklyn, Kuminga's value could also increase from here. And that should only help as the Nets look to piece together a contending roster brick by boring brick. While the Nets have made a few confounding decisions this offseason (like spending a chunk of their cap space on Mann and absorbing Porter's contract, with MPJ making around $17 million more than Johnson), it's not too late for them to be a major player in restricted free agency. But time is of the essence for the Nets. From Mark Buehrle to late Bobby Jenks, 2005 White Sox return to Chicago's spotlight: Greenberg
CHICAGO — As Mark Buehrle approached a lectern in the outfield patio of Rate Field, a nearby fan yelled, 'It's not going to be a long speech!' A source close to the situation confirmed it. 'I'm going to make this quick,' Buehrle said. If there's one thing Buehrle was known for during his time with the White Sox, it was efficiency. He threw the pitches his catcher called and didn't waste any time on the mound. He was the king of the two-hour game before the pitch clock. Advertisement On this day, he was only talking because he was getting a statue in the outfield, joining former teammates Paul Konerko and Frank Thomas, among others. The honor came 10 years after he hung it up and eight years after his number was retired by the White Sox, with whom he made 365 regular-season starts and threw 3,283 1/3 innings, with a perfect game, no-hitter, World Series win and a save thrown in for good measure. The statue dedication was the opener of a much-anticipated 20th-anniversary reunion weekend for the 2005 White Sox. For much of the ceremony, as public-address announcer Gene Honda read his accolades, Buehrle looked like he was at a funeral, sitting there in the hot sun with a dour face. For a guy who loved being on the mound, tarp-diving and catching first pitches, he kind of hates attention. It's why he doesn't miss baseball. 'I was literally nervous as can be all day today,' he said later. 'Got three hours of sleep last night. Couldn't eat all day today. Sick to my stomach. All these cameras and mics and people, this is not my comfortable zone.' Even after seeing the statue in person, Buehrle was still processing the honor. 'You don't play the game for any of this,' he said. 'I literally went out there and played just because I love baseball and I love competing. … You never think of a number retirement, a statue. I can't even wrap my head around it, like it just doesn't make sense.' It did if you watched him pitch. Almost all of his teammates stood out on the crowded concourse for the ceremony. These are men in their 40s and 50s who could now blend into a crowd. They took pictures, videos and selfies. And for their manager, that was the most special part of the day. We just start getting on each other, wearing each other out, making fun of each other. I think when you go to battle and you win a World Series with a team, it's like that. You got a special bond with those guys.' Advertisement While everyone was happy for Buehrle and excited to see old friends, the recent death of Bobby Jenks, the cherubic closer with a 100 mph heater, cast a pall over the event. 'Hearing that news, it hit me a little harder than I thought it would,' Buehrle said. 'It's definitely very sad.' Jenks, who died of cancer on July 4 in Portugal, had hoped to make the event. When he started treatment, he told his doctors to clear his schedule for this weekend. But it wasn't meant to be. Jon Garland ordered a Jenks jersey and wore it to Friday's event. 'Bobby was a huge personality. A huge human being,' A.J. Pierzynski said. 'For him not to be here was a huge hole in this whole thing.' After the last out of the 2005 World Series, Pieryznski jumped into Jenks' arms. The image of Jenks pumping his fists is now a memorial graphic at the ballpark. The current team will wear No. 45 patches on their jerseys for the rest of the season. Jenks came up midway through that season when the team needed him most, like a character in a storybook. He was a big kid, a husky man-child, who threw 100 mph with a nasty curveball. For a team that prided itself on playing with a chip on their collective shoulders, Jenks, who had a turbulent life and minor-league career to that point, fit right in. But Guillen thought Jenks' death would have a unifying effect on the team. He wondered how they would react when they are all together and Jenks is mentioned during Saturday's ceremony. 'Losing my boy, losing everybody's guy, that man was special for everyone,' he said. Guillen said he spent a lot of time with his former closer last summer when Jenks was managing an independent-league team in the Chicago area. Baseball (and golf) brought them back together. But Ozzie said he won't miss Jenks because that would mean he forgot about him. 'You never die when people remember you every day,' he said. If that's the case, Bobby Jenks, like Mark Buehrle, Ozzie Guillen and the rest of the 2005 White Sox will live forever.

Yelich, Vaughn homers help power Brewers to an 8-3 win over the Nationals
MILWAUKEE — Christian Yelich and Andrew Vaughn homered and the Milwaukee Brewers extended their winning streak to five games with an 8-3 victory over the Washington Nationals on Friday night. The Brewers scored six runs in the third, opening the inning with six consecutive hits off Mitchell Parker (5-10). The string of hits was capped by Yelich's two-run homer. Caleb Durbin doubled on a misplayed fly to right to open the inning. Joey Ortiz and Sal Frelick singled to tie it 1-all. William Contreras followed with an RBI double and Jackson Chourio added a two-run single. Yelich then sent a 1-1 pitch 405 feet to right for his team-leading 19th homer.
