On Saturday, the Corinthia Hotel in the capital, Tripoli, hosted the First National Conference on the Development of English Language in Libya.
The event was jointly organized by the Institute of Planning and the International College of Languages, and was attended by a distinguished group of academics, experts, and individuals interested in advancing English language education in the country.
The conference saw broad participation from the Military Engineering College, representatives of various ministries, and educational institutions from both general and higher education sectors. It also witnessed a notable presence of students and researchers from different Libyan cities.

Italy rescues hundreds of migrants in the Mediterranean after departures from Libya
The Italian coastguard has rescued around 200 migrants stranded in the central Mediterranean after departing from the Libyan coast aboard a fishing vessel. According to the non-governmental organisation Alarm Phone, the rescued migrants were transferred to the Italian island of Sicily. In a separate operation, the same platform reported that 40 additional migrants were rescued by the Italian coastguard after they ran out of fuel at sea. The group, also departing from Libya, had been sending distress calls since Sunday. Alarm Phone also reported a vessel carrying 50 migrants that had left the Libyan coast and was later found stranded on an offshore oil platform in the central Mediterranean. Authorities are still working to determine the vessel's exact location. Another boat, reportedly carrying over 25 migrants bound for Spain, has also departed from the Libyan coast, according to the NGO. So far in 2025, at least 652 migrants have died or gone missing in the Mediterranean Sea, according to data from the International Organization for Migration (IOM). Tags: Italy migrants

EU envoy reaffirms full support for UN efforts in Libya
The European Union's Ambassador to Libya, Nicola Orlando, has reaffirmed the EU's full support for the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) during a meeting with UN Special Representative Hanna Tetteh. In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, Orlando said he discussed with Tetteh the latest political developments in Libya and the next steps in the UN-led political process, as well as ongoing engagement with Libyan and international partners. The EU envoy praised what he described as a 'renewed sense of urgency' in the mission's consultations, reaffirming the EU's strong commitment to supporting efforts aimed at restoring peace and stability in Libya. He also emphasized the importance of constructive engagement by all Libyan parties with the UN's efforts and warned against unilateral and uncoordinated initiatives, which he said could harm the political process. 'We agreed on the need to make every possible effort to preserve the ceasefire and prevent any slide back into violence,' Orlando added, underlining the EU's firm commitment to accountability in response to any threats to Libya's security and stability.
