A return to Leeds-style structure?
One of the options for India's team management is to revert to the combination used at Headingley—a line-up with just one spinner, Jadeja, and a top six packed with specialist batters, including Karun Nair and Sai Sudharsan. This structure provided batting depth but relied heavily on the frontline pacers to share the load.
That decision may once again hinge on the fitness of Akash Deep, who is still recovering from a groin strain. If he's unable to take the field, Anshul Kamboj or Prasidh Krishna could be called upon.
Kamboj's sharp form puts him in frame
Kamboj, who impressed during the India A shadow tour of England, looked sharp during India's first outdoor training session in Manchester. Known for his ability to extract seam movement—much like Akash Deep—Kamboj may be a tempting option for the conditions.

India, who started their second innings 311 runs behind, produced a spirited batting display to finish on 425 for four in 143 overs, with Gill (103), KL Rahul (90), Jadeja (107 not out) and Washington (101 not out) leading the resistance. There was a brief moment of drama in the final hour when England skipper Stokes proposed ending the contest early, with both Indian batters approaching individual milestones. But the offer was turned down, allowing Jadeja and Washington to reach their hundreds. 'Definitely it was up to the boys, but we thought they batted brilliantly. Both of them were in their 90s, so we thought they deserved a century,' Gill said at the post-match presentation. India were reduced to 0 for two early in their second innings after openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan fell without scoring, but the middle-order stood firm under pressure. "With our batting effort, the past couple of days I think we were put under a lot of pressure. But I think the way we responded, especially after losing those two early wickets, never easy but a very brave effort," Gill said. "It's all about taking the wicket out of the equation. There is a provision that allows both captains to shake hands and agree to a draw if they feel that the possibility of a result is impossible. Having worked hard to earn a creditable draw, Jadeja and Washington, batting on 89 and 80 respectively, flatly refused Stokes' offer after he had approached the umpire, which irked the England skipper no end. With both approaching their hundreds after having saved the match, they exercised their rights to continue batting. Stokes had a few words to say as Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett were also seen enquiring as to why India wanted to carry on. "Do you want to score a hundred against Harry Brook?" Stokes asked sarcastically and all Jadeja said was "I can't do anything." A smiling Jadeja maintained his grace and ticked them off as India, as per rules, were well within their rights to carry on batting. Nursing a broken foot, Rishabh Pant was available to bat in the second innings but he did not need to come to the middle and risk aggravation of his injury. Strikingly, it was England's only second draw in the 40 Tests played in the Bazball era with the last one coming also at Old Trafford during the 2023 Ashes (weather was the main factor behind the draw).
