Received approval from board to raise ₹5,000 cr: Indian Bank MD & CEO
The Chennai-headquartered bank reported a capital adequacy ratio of 17.80 per cent for the April-June 2025 quarter, the bank's Managing Director and CEO Binod Kumar said.
"Approval is there. We have to raise ₹ 5,000 crore. Not QIP (Qualified Institutional Placement) or by any other instruments. But, I do not think it (fund raise) will be required (immediately). 17.8 per cent (of Capital Adequacy Ratio) is there.., " he told PTI in a brief interaction.
During the April-June 2025 quarter, the Capital Adequacy Ratio of the bank rose to 17.80 per cent from 16.47 per cent recorded in the same quarter of last financial year.
Besides the fund raising plan, the bank is betting big on its UPI related payments proposal, as it is currently working on developing an IND-UPI application, similar to the services provided by PhonePe, GPay or PayTM.
Through such an initiative, the bank would be able to save about ₹ 150 crore every year.
Elaborating, Kumar said the bank is developing its own UPI app named 'IND-UPI', a UPI-based payment solution similar to the current PhonePe, GPay or PayTM services.
"Right now, our customers are using other UPI apps and we (Indian Bank) have to pay them a fee. Monthly, it will be around ₹ 12 crore. With the IND-UPI payment facility, customers will be able to make payments using our own application and through this we will be able to save ₹ 12 crore per month (around ₹ 150 crore per annum)", he said.
Kumar explained that the application is currently used by the senior officials of the bank as a 'Closed User Group' and it would be rolled out to customers soon after getting the approval from NPCI.
"By this initiative, we will be able to save a handsome amount. We will be able to pass on the benefits to our own customers like providing incentives whenever they use IND-UPI app to make UPI-transactions," he said.
To a query about hiring plans, he replied in the affirmative, stating they have received approval to recruit 3,000 employees during the current financial year across "all levels."
"It will be 3,000 people across all levels this year. We are going to do specialised hiring like cyber security, risk specialists, there will be multiple specialised roles," he said.
Indian Bank reported a 24 per cent rise in net profit to ₹ 2,973 crore in the April-June 2025 quarter. The bank earned a net profit of ₹ 2,403 crore in the corresponding quarter of last financial year.
"The result is in line because earlier the growth has been a challenge for us. But this quarter we have grown in double digit. Earlier we grew in single digit," he said.
On the bank's target for this year under the recoveries segment, he said, "We have given guidance of ₹ 5,500 to ₹ 6,500 crore for the year. But in this April-June 2025 quarter itself, we have recovered ₹ 2,059 crore. It is a good one".

TCS to lay off over 12,000 employees this year; mid, senior level staff to be impacted
New Delhi, Jul 27 (PTI) India's largest IT services firm, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), is set to lay off about 2 per cent, or 12,261 employees, of its global workforce this year, with the majority of those impacted belonging to middle and senior grades. As of June 30, 2025, TCS's workforce stood at 6,13,069. It increased its workforce by 5,000 employees in the recently concluded April-June quarter. The move is part of the company's broader strategy to become a "future-ready organisation", focusing on investments in technology, AI deployment, market expansion, and workforce realignment, TCS said in a statement. "TCS is on a journey to become a Future-Ready organisation. This includes strategic initiatives on multiple fronts, including investing in new-tech areas, entering new markets, deploying AI at scale for our clients and ourselves, deepening our partnerships, creating next-gen infrastructure, and realigning our workforce model. "Towards this, a number of reskilling and redeployment initiatives have been underway. As part of this journey, we will also be releasing associates from the organisation whose deployment may not be feasible. This will impact about 2 per cent of our global workforce, primarily in the middle and the senior grades, over the course of the year," it said. TCS will provide appropriate benefits, outplacement, counselling, and support to the impacted employees, it added The move comes at a time when India's top IT services companies have delivered single-digit revenue growth in Q1FY26, capping off a somewhat-sobering June quarter as macroeconomic instability and geopolitical tensions weighed on global tech demand and delayed client decision-making. For TCS, the revenue rose 1.3 per cent year-on-year to ₹ 63,437 crore, bottomline improved 5.9 per cent to ₹ 12,760 crore in Q1FY26. TCS MD and Chief Executive K Krithivasan recently said the company is experiencing a "demand contraction" due to the continued uncertainties on the macroeconomic and geopolitical fronts, and added that he does not see a double-digit revenue growth in FY26. Krithivasan explained the delays in decision-making experienced in the preceding quarter have "intensified" now, and hoped for the discretionary spends - a prime mover of revenue growths for IT companies - would return once the uncertainties ebb. Microsoft, the second most valuable publicly listed company after Nvidia globally, has so far laid off over 15,000 employees in 2025, that is 7 per cent of the company's global workforce. In a memo to over 200,000 employees last week, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said the layoffs this year have been "weighing heavily" on him. "This is the enigma of success in an industry that has no franchise value,' he said in the memo to staff. He added: "Progress isn't linear. It's dynamic, sometimes dissonant, and always demanding. But it's also a new opportunity for us to shape, lead through, and have greater impact than ever before." According to - a platform that tracks global tech industry layoffs - over 80,000 tech workers have been laid off across 169 tech companies in 2025 alone. In 2024, that number stood at a staggering 1.5 lakh across 551 tech companies - the stark numbers coinciding as much with global macroeconomic woes as with deep debate in tech circles about the impact of AI on job roles, workforce, and employability.

Each set will cost about 20,000, including the billing machine. Officials said this has already helped streamline payment tracking, monitor purchase timings, and prevent revenue leakage at the staff level. "We received complaints that Amma Canteens were receiving PDS ration in bulk in the city. With QR or digital payments, such pilferage will also reduce," said an official from the department. The state operates one of the country's largest PDS networks, distributing rice, wheat, sugar, tur dal, palm oil, palm jaggery, and millets to 2.25 crore ration cardholders. Of these outlets, 35,181 are run by the cooperative department, 1,527 by the Tamil Nadu civil supplies corporation (TNCSC), 152 by other cooperatives, and 468 by women's self-help groups. Digital payments are one of the criteria for receiving ISO certification. So far, 10,149 fair price shops have obtained ISO 9001 certification for quality, and 2,059 have received ISO 28000 certification for storage safety.
