Devise ways to increase revenue of gram panchayats for a more effective Panchayati Raj system: Amit Shah

The Hindu5 days ago

Devise ways and formulate rules to increase the revenue of gram panchayats, Union Home Minister Amit Shah urged the Chief Ministers of Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Madhya Pradesh. He said enhancing the revenue of panchayats would make India's three-tier, democratic Panchayati Raj system more effective, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) highlighted in a statement.
Mr. Shah on Tuesday (June 24, 2025) chaired the 25th meeting of the Central Zonal Council in Varanasi, attended by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami, Madhya Pradesh CM Mohan Yadav, and Chhattisgarh CM Vishnu Deo Sai.
Nineteen issues were discussed at the meeting, including several matters of national importance, the MHA said. The implementation of Fast Track Special Courts for the speedy investigation and prompt disposal of cases of rape involving women and children; provision of brick and mortar banking facilities within the designated radius of every village; and the implementation of Emergency Response Support System (ERSS-112) were among the key issues that came up at the gathering.
All States should ensure the eradication of child malnutrition, bring the school dropout ratio down to zero, and strengthen the cooperative sector, the Home Minister said.
Under Sections 15 to 22 of the States Reorganisation Act, 1956, five Zonal Councils were established. The Home Minister is the Chairperson of the Councils. The Zonal Councils serve an advisory role. With the cooperation of all State governments, Central Ministries, and departments, a total of 62 meetings of various Zonal Councils and their permanent committees had been held in the past 11 years, the MHA said.

Congress wants the people to forget about the Emergency: Pralhad Joshi

The Congress party wants the people to forget about the 1975 Emergency and is misleading the people by saying that the nation is facing an undeclared emergency now, Union Consumer Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi said here on Sunday. Mr. Joshi was addressing a seminar organised by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) here as part of a nationwide campaign organised in connection with the 50th anniversary of the Emergency. 'After such a long gap, they want the people to forget about the Emergency. But in the interests of democracy and the country, the people should not be allowed to forget it,' he said. According to him, the credit for putting up a strong fight against the Emergency went to the Jan Sangh, RSS and the ABVP. The Communist parties did not put up a fight. Neither the Congress nor the Congress has shown 'an iota' of respect to B.R. Ambedkar, who chaired the committee that drafted the Constitution. The BJP campaign is designed to make the people more vigilant and to make sure that the Constitution is not tampered with again, Mr. Joshi said. Almost 50% of the Constitution was changed within the 21 months of the Emergency. Even today, the Congress, which was responsible for the Emergency and continues to pursue dynastic politics, is not democratic. The Emergency was never a Constitutional necessity, but a political conspiracy deisgned to keep Indira Gandhi in power, he said. Mr. Joshi also sought to counter Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge's remark that V.D. Savarkar was responsible for the Lok Sabha poll defeat of B.R. Ambedkar. Jawaharlal Nehru had visited the constituency twice to campaign for Narayan Sadoba Kajrolkar, who defeated Ambedkar, he said. BJP State president Rajeev Chandrasekhar, senior BJP leaders V. Muraleedharan and P.K. Krishnadas, Minority Morcha national vice president Abdul Salam were among those present. Mr. Joshi also released the book 'Emergency Diaries - Years that Forged a Leader ' at the function by handing over a copy to Mr. Rajeev Chandrasekhar.

Fighter jets to soon land on highways in Assam: CM Sarma

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday said that the government has planned to make provisions for emergency landing of Indian Air Force fighter jets as well as civilian aircraft on a national highway stretch near Dibrugarh within October this year, marking this is the first-of-its kind of facility to come up in the entire northeastern region. Sarma told reporters here: "The Union government has given the nod to prepare a portion of national highway from Moran to Numaligarh that passes through Dibrugarh to use it as an emergency landing facility for Air Force fighter jets like Sukhoi 30 and Rafale. A stretch of 4.2 km on this national highway is being prepared to land fighter jets.' The Chief Minister further mentioned about a deadline to finish this work. 'We are aiming for October this year to prepare the 4.2 km stretch of national highway to land Air Force fighter jets. I have been constantly in touch with the Air Force authorities to meet this deadline. The work will be completed under their supervision also. Once the highway is prepared for landing fighter jets, we will organise an air show for the general public,' he added. CM Sarma also claimed that if any emergency situation arises, civilian aircraft will also be able to make landing on the national highway. He said: 'If at any situation, any civilian aircraft is not able to land at Dibrugarh airport, there will be a provision for an emergency landing on the national highway also.' The Chief Minister also mentioned that the Union government has given nod to prepare national highway for emergency in two other places in Assam. Sarma said: 'The Central government has given permission to prepare national highways in two other places in the state for emergency aircraft landing. One spot will be in lower Assam and other will be in between Nagaon and Lumding. The work for these two places will commence soon.' The Chief Minister asserted that people of Assam are set to witness unprecedented development in terms of road infrastructure.

Home Minister Amit Shah rules out talks with Maoists holding weapons

Hyderabad: Reiterating the resolve to make India free of Maoists by March 31, 2026, Union Home Minister Amit Shah ruled out talks with the extremists holding weapons. Making it clear that there will be no talks with Maoists holding guns, he asked the left-wing extremists to give up arms and join the national mainstream. Addressing the Kisan Sammelan in Nizamabad after inaugurating the headquarters of the National Turmeric Board, Amit Shah accused the Congress party of trying to shield Maoists. He expressed the apprehension that the Congress party may provide shelter in Telangana to Maoists who have escaped from all over the country. Amit Shah told the Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy not to allow Telangana to become the den of Maoists. The Home Minister said the Maoists who want to surrender were free to do so. 'Shun violence, give up arms and surrender. If you don't surrender, we have resolved that by March 31, 2026, we will end Naxalism from this country,' he said. He said that there can't be any talks with those who killed tribals, policemen and security personnel. 'The Congress party is for talks with them. Our policy is that there will be no talks with those holding guns. Surrender, drop guns and join the national mainstream,' he said and mentioned that 10,000 people in the northeast gave up arms and joined the national mainstream. He noted that 2,000 Naxalites surrendered in one and a half years, but ruled out talks with those who have weapons in their hands. 'I want to ask those who talk of shielding Naxalites what they will say to families of tribals, policemen and security personnel who lost their lives,' he said. Amit Shah stated that for four decades, Naxalites killed 40,000 people in tribal regions and stalled the development. The Home Minister said that neither the BRS nor Congress can do any good for the people of Telangana and claimed that only a double-engine government of the BJP can ensure the state's comprehensive development and welfare of all sections. He alleged that Congress has left behind the BRS in corruption. HM Shah said people rejected BRS because of corruption, but Congress has proved to be more corrupt. 'Earlier, Telangana was the ATM of the KCR family, and now it has become the ATM of the Congress party,' he said. Referring to Operation Sindoor, Amit Shah said India destroyed the headquarters of terrorism in Pakistan. He said that for 10 years of Congress rule, terrorists from Pakistan used to enter India, attack and escape with no one to stop them. He claimed that during the last 10 years, Prime Minister Modi carried out three major operations. 'After Uri, surgical strikes were carried out. After Pulwama happened, there was an air strike, and after Pahalgam, we entered Pakistani soil to give them a befitting reply,' he said. The Home Minister said that after the Pahalgam attack, the Prime Minister had said that the perpetrators would be taught a lesson. 'Pakistan was threatening with an atomic bomb. Congress was thinking that nothing would happen, but one night, brave soldiers of our forces smashed the headquarters of terrorism and killed hundreds of terrorists,' he said 'Even today, Rahul Gandhi is raising questions. I want to tell him to see the appearance of Pakistanis, he will get the answer. They used to say we will not allow India to rest, but our leader destroyed their headquarters,' he added.
