Alliance matters: Annamalai says Amit Shah wants coalition govt in TN
K Annamalai CHENNAI: Signs of tension building up in the AIADMK-BJP alliance emerged on Thursday, with the two parties engaging in public sparring over sharing of power in Tamil Nadu after the 2026 assembly elections. A day after AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami said that Union home minister Amit Shah had never spoken about forming a coalition govt in the state, former BJP state president K Annamalai countered the claim, stating that Shah had clearly and repeatedly said he wanted a coalition govt. 'Amit Shah has said not once, but thrice, that there will be a coalition govt in Tamil Nadu after the 2026 elections,' Annamalai told reporters here on Thursday. He said it was Shah who stitched together the BJP-AIADMK alliance. Annamalai also claimed that parties such as PMK, DMDK and Puthiya Tamizhagam supported the idea of a coalition govt in TN. Annamalai added that his remarks should not been seen as an attempt to create a rift in the alliance. 'Some people might claim that I am saying this in an attempt to break the alliance. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is it legal? Annamalai's remarks come against the backdrop of EPS repeatedly dismissing the idea of a coalition govt and asserting that his word was final regarding the AIADMK front in TN. Other senior leaders, though cautious in their remarks, upheld their positions. Union minister of state L Murugan said Shah's statement on the coalition was final as far as BJP is concerned, while AIADMK deputy general secretary K P Munusamy had maintained that EPS's stand was final.

Centre: In touch with ‘friendly' nations to save Nimisha Priya
New Delhi/Kochi: India is in touch with "friendly" countries to save Nimisha Priya, said the Union govt even as mediation talks involving religious leaders reportedly continued in Yemen's capital city of Sana'a on Thursday. Priya is facing death sentence for murdering Yemeni national Talal Abdo Mahdi and a section of the victim's family has reportedly opposed the mediation involving representatives of religious leaders. Priya's execution was scheduled for Wednesday (July 16), but it was postponed after a preliminary round of talks. The Union govt officially confirmed that Priya's death sentence in Yemen had been postponed without elaborating further. Centre said it was a very sensitive matter and it had been offering all possible assistance in the case, including legal help, and appointed a lawyer to assist Priya's family. "We have also arranged for regular consular visits by her family. We are also in touch with local authorities as well as the family members to resolve this issue. This included concerted efforts in the recent few days to seek more time for the family of Miss Nimisha Priya to reach a mutually agreeable solution with the other party," said MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like An engineer reveals: One simple trick to get internet without a subscription Techno Mag Learn More Undo "We continue to closely follow the matter and render all possible assistance in the case. We are also in touch with some friendly govts in this regard," said the official. In the past, Iran, the principal backer of Yemen's Houthis, had said that it would look into the issue. Meanwhile, the Save Nimisha Priya International Action Council informed that another round of discussions was held on Thursday regarding the possibility of accepting blood money and granting a pardon to Priya, who hails from Kollengode in Palakkad. The council said the talks made remarkable progress. Priya was convicted of murdering Mahdi in July 2017, with whom she had started a health clinic in Sana'a and later reportedly married. A trial court sentenced her to death in 2018, which was upheld by an appeals court. Subhash Chandran of the Save Nimisha Priya International Action Council said the talks were ongoing between religious leaders and the victim's family, following the intervention of Sunni leader Kanthapuram Aboobacker Musaliyar. Meanwhile, he ruled out reports that opposition from a section of Mahdi's family members was affecting the talks. "Only one person in the family is against the move to settle the issue. That is not affecting the talks," he said. Meanwhile, Abdul Fattah Mahdi, who claims to be the brother of Talal Abdo Mahdi, posted on social media on Thursday that the family was sticking to the earlier demand of executing Priya. "We have not met or held discussions with anyone until now. Our position is firm and we adhere to implementing God's law — only retribution," said Abdul Fattah's Facebook post in Arabic, with a Malayalam translation and an attached image of Malayalam news reports regarding the progress of negotiation talks.

Revanna recalls how well he handled energy dept in coalition govt
Mysuru: Former minister and Holenarasipura JD(S) MLA HD Revanna on Thursday said a project initially designed to enhance power generation and supply electricity to rural areas of Ramanagara and Bengaluru was renamed Mekedatu project. Revanna said during his tenure in the coalition govt as the energy minister, a detailed project report (DPR) was prepared for the project, aimed at generating 500MW of hydropower. However, the collapse of the coalition govt halted progress. "This project is now named Mekedatu," Revanna told reporters. Speaking about his tenure, Revanna claimed he maintained fiscal discipline, avoiding any electricity tariff hikes and leaving the energy department with a fixed deposit of Rs 500 crore. He contrasted this with the department's current financial state, alleging it now faces a debt of Rs 55,000 crore. "I do not know about smart meter installation. Earlier, we undertook reform measures in Mysuru, Mangaluru, and Bengaluru. Now, we only hear about losses," he said, expressing concern over the department's present condition. Acknowledging minor confusion within JD(S), he said: "Ours is a small party. Former minister GT Devegowda will not go away. Everything will be fine in the coming days."
