Player grades: Sixers fall to Bucks at home, losing skid now at 10
PHILADELPHIA -- The Philadelphia 76ers returned home on Thursday to play host to the Milwaukee Bucks looking to get closer to the finish line. The Sixers are still dealing with a ton of injuries and are hoping they can continue to develop their younger players at the end of a miserable season.
The Bucks, still playing for something this late in the season, got off to a slow start as the Sixers led by as many as 17. However, once Milwaukee kicked it into high gear, it was too much for Philadelphia to handle. The Bucks walked away with a 126-113 win sending the Sixers to their 10th straight loss.
Adem Bona had 28 and six rebounds for the Sixers while Quentin Grimes added 24 points and 10 assists. Guerschon Yabusele added 22 points and six rebounds, Jared Butler had 14 points and four assists, and Justin Edwards had eight and eight rebounds.
Here are the player grades following the loss:
Jared Butler: B-plus
The Bucks had a tough time staying in front of Butler in this one. He did a good job of being able to get to the basket and finish and he was efficient with his 3-point shooting. He made good decisions with the basketball and got the Sixers rolling early on the offensive end. He had been struggling with his shot as of late so it was good to see him get going again with his 3-point looks.
Quentin Grimes: A-minus
The Bucks did pay a lot of defensive attention to Grimes, but he was able to combat that with his playmaking. He tallied up six assists in the first quarter which allowed the Sixers to get into an offensive groove early and build a large lead against a talented Milwaukee team. He got going with his offense in the second quarter as he continues to show off his ability to put the ball in the basket as the No. 1 option for this group. There were a few moments in this one when he really took control. Meaning he was running things and making sure guys were in the right places. That's growth.
Justin Edwards: B
It was a solid night for Edwards. Continuing to play a ton of minutes as a rookie, he is powering through the 'rookie wall' and he did a solid job of producing on both ends in this one. He did a good job of manipulating the defense and getting to where he wanted to go on the offensive end. He was terrific on the glass as well being able to come up with some extra possessions for the Sixers.
Adem Bona: A-plus
It was a helluva night for Bona. Drawing the Antetokounmpo assignment on the defensive end, he had to expend a lot of energy having to defend the 2-time MVP, but that didn't slow him down on the offensive end. He was active around the basket, did an excellent job of cutting, and his athleticism made a difference against an older Bucks team. He powered his way through the defense for an impressive slam over what seemed like the entire Milwaukee team. He is beginning to understand how to produce at this level and he has a bright future in this league. The only word to describe Bona on this night is fantastic.
Guerschon Yabusele: A
There were some good offensive moments for Yabusele in this one. He knocked down a triple and then took Bucks big man Brook Lopez off the dribble to finish at the basket. He was active defensively and did his best on the glass when considering the size of the Bucks being an issue. Overall, The Dancing Bear made his biggest impact on the offensive end as he knocked down some timely triples and was able to get into a rhythm. His ability to be able to space the floor is going to be a big reason why the Sixers should bring him back in free agency in the offseason.
Jalen Hood-Schifino: A
The night for Hood-Schifino started with him getting into the mid-range and knocking down a tough shot over some tough defenders. He had a nice night overall being able to pump in some buckets while making plays for others with his passing and being a pest defensively. He also grabbed a couple of rebounds.
Lonnie Walker IV: B-plus
Walker hopped off the bench and was immediately engaged on the offensive end. He was aggressive in going to the basket and finishing against an indifferent Bucks defense in this one. He has a lightning quick first step and was able to then use his size to get his spots on offense in order to convert on his looks. He was helpful with his playmaking and his rebounding as he did a little bit of everything in this one.
Ricky Council IV: D
The initial stint for Council didn't produce much. He missed a deep 3-point attempt and grabbed a rebound in that stint, but not much else. He was able to help on the glass and give the Sixers some help in that area, but it was an overall quiet night.
Colin Castleton: C
Making his debut after being signed to a 10-day, Castleton had a nice assist to start the night. He has previous NBA experience with Memphis and Toronto so he has an understanding of how to play and what to do at this level and he gave the Sixers good production in this one.

Lamar Jackson declines to comment on the arbitration case that stemmed in part from his free agency

Associated Press OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) — Lamar Jackson wasn't at all interested in discussing the arbitration case that's helped cause so much upheaval within the NFL Players Association. In January, arbitrator Christopher Droney ruled there wasn't sufficient evidence of collusion by owners in contract negotiations with quarterbacks after the Cleveland Browns gave QB Deshaun Watson a record $230 million fully guaranteed contract back in 2022. The union is appealing. Jackson's free agency a couple of years ago was a big part of that case. The Ravens gave him the non-exclusive franchise tag, meaning he had a chance to negotiate with other teams, but he ultimately signed a five-year deal with Baltimore. The 'Pablo Torre Finds Out' podcast first published the arbitrator's decision. When asked about the case Wednesday after practice, Jackson changed the subject. 'I'm focused on football right now. I'm not worried about that right now," Jackson said. "That happened. It is what it is. I'm focused on this right now.' The revelation that the NFLPA and the league had a confidentiality agreement to keep the arbitrator's ruling quiet has led to turmoil within the union. Lloyd Howell resigned as executive director of the NFLPA. Jackson wouldn't comment on what's happening within the NFLPA either, although it's obviously a significant topic around the league. 'Yeah, it's been kind of a mess. We've been meeting about it the past couple days, long meetings. That's also something that's been hanging over my head, too,' said tackle Zach Tom, player rep for the Green Bay Packers. 'I think it's an unfortunate situation. I'm really not sure how much I can say. I'll just leave it at that.' Watson received his deal in 2022, a year before Jackson had a limited chance to test the market. 'While the NFL Management Council encouraged the 32 member clubs of the NFL to reduce guarantees in future contracts with players at the March 2022 annual meeting of the club owners, the clubs did not join in such a collusive agreement and did not act in accordance with one as to the three quarterbacks named (Jackson, Russell Wilson and Kyler Murray) in the initial arbitration demand or to other veteran players,' the arbitrator's decision said. In the two seasons since, Jackson has finished first and second in the MVP vote, and the question now is whether he and the Ravens can agree on an extension beyond the three years left on his deal. Jackson certainly indicated that he's moved on from the 2023 negotiations, but that appears to have been a turning point after Watson's deal, and one that has continued to impact what quarterbacks can expect to be offered. 'I'm all for the players and I'm all for guys getting what they deserve," Las Vegas quarterback Geno Smith said. "Whenever a guy like Lamar — two-time MVP, perennial Pro Bowler — a lot of these other guys who are doing a great job, when there's a chance for them to really just get what they deserve, I think it's warranted. ... When you work hard and you earn something, you kind of just want your just due.' ___ AP Sports Writers Mark Anderson and Steve Megargee contributed to this report. ___ AP NFL: recommended Item 1 of 3

North Irvine prevents Newport Beach 18U ‘three-peat' at USA Water Polo Junior Olympics

IRVINE — Luke Harris called it a really hard decision to leave his brothers on the Newport Harbor High boys' water polo team, competing for a different club team before heading off to college. What made the decision a bit easier was knowing that his good friend and fellow goalkeeper, incoming senior Connor Clougherty, was more than capable of taking the reins in the cage. 'That's my true team, my alma mater,' said Harris, who helped the Sailors claim the CIF Southern Section Open Division title last fall. 'I will always love them to death and be supportive of them. All I want for them is for them to get better and succeed.' Harris left to play with a 'super team,' North Irvine Beast Boys, made up of players from different high schools, this summer. On Tuesday afternoon, he faced many of his Sailors teammates in the boys' 18-and-under gold medal match of the USA Water Polo Junior Olympics. Harris prevented Newport Beach Water Polo Club from winning the division three years in a row, though his own personal streak is intact. The USC-bound goalie made 12 saves as the Beast Boys beat Newport Beach 9-5 for the title at Woollett Aquatics Center. It's the third straight Junior Olympics title for Harris, who helped the Newport Beach 18s win it in 2023 and again last year. 'It felt like it was all or nothing,' Harris said. 'If we didn't win, we were going to feel like a bunch of dogs, honestly. Our whole persona was big, almost a little cocky, everyone kind of hated us. If we didn't win this, it was all for nothing. That was our mindset the whole time.' JSerra graduate Gavin Conant, who, like Harris, will be a Trojan next year, scored a match-high four goals and earned MVP honors. North Irvine, which avenged a loss to Newport Beach in the Junior Olympics quarterfinals on Monday, also featured Corona del Mar graduate Jackson Harlan and Newport Harbor graduate Santino Rossi. Harlan, the 2024-25 Daily Pilot Dream Team Player of the Year, had a field block and a drawn exclusion in the win. 'Coming together and training for three months, going out and getting the job done, there's no better feeling,' Harlan said. 'A surreal feeling.' Sean Anderson, an incoming sophomore transfer from JSerra, had two goals for team-high honors for Newport Beach. Coach Ross Sinclair said that Anderson and his older brother, Tyler, an incoming senior center who starred for the Lions last season, are now both officially enrolled at Newport Harbor. Kai Kaneko, Declan Bartlett and Fletcher Appeldorn added goals for Newport Beach. Clougherty made four saves. Harris said that North Irvine, which led 6-2 at halftime, effectively utilized an 'M-drop' zone defense. 'They just played a little faster, a little more intense, and they had some big moments from big-time players,' Sinclair said. 'I love Luke; I thought he was great. I've seen that before. I'm bummed that we lost, but I'm happy for the way that he goes out his last year. He was fantastic.' Newport Beach missed incoming senior standout Connor Ohl, who has been playing with the U.S. men's senior national team at the World Aquatics World Championships in Singapore. Team USA plays Italy in the seventh-place match on Thursday morning. The Sailors, who Sinclair has guided to the CIF finals in the top division for six straight years, will get back to high school water polo soon enough this fall. 'We have a good group, it's going to be fun,' Sinclair said. 'It's more, 'how do we stay focused, stay hungry and use experiences like this to get better?' It's going to be a fun high school season. There's a lot of good teams out there. We'll enjoy a little break, come back and chip away.' Session Two of the USA Water Polo Junior Olympics, featuring girls' and co-ed divisions, runs Thursday through Sunday in Orange County.

Five-for-Five: Shohei Ohtani Joins Dodger Greats With Latest HR Feat

Shohei Ohtani homered for the fifth consecutive game on Wednesday, tying a Los Angeles Dodgers franchise record. Yankees star Aaron Judge was the last player to homer in five consecutive games, accomplishing that feat last year. Ohtani, who leads the National League with 37 home runs, homered in the first inning off Minnesota Twins starter Chris Paddack. He hit a slow curveball 441 feet to center. He carried the bat midway down the first-base line and then did a bat flip. This is the seventh time in Dodgers history that a player has homered in five consecutive games. Ohtani joins Max Muncy, Joc Pederson, Adrian Gonzalez, Matt Kemp, Shawn Green and Roy Campanella in that club. Ohtani, a three-time MVP, is batting .276 with 70 RBIs. He's also pitched well in six games and is scheduled to throw four innings on Monday in Cincinnati as he is getting close in his buildup as a starter, coming back from his second right UCL repair surgery. With an off day on Thursday, Ohtani's next chance to see if he can homer in six consecutive games will be against the Red Sox in Boston. Reporting by The Associated Press.
