‘Matter of great pride': Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami to launch sports university, 23 academies across 8 cities

NEW DELHI: Uttarakhand chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami is set to launch two initiatives for the development of sports and athletes, marking the fifth year of his tenure. The first is the establishment of a sports university in Haldwani, whose foundation is to be laid on Sports Day, and the other is the establishment of 23 sports academies across eight cities in the state. The academies will be established in cities like Dehradun, Haldwani, and Haridwar, where sports infrastructure was developed during the National Games. 'It is a matter of great pride that Uttarakhand is now being recognized as a land of sports. After the grand hosting of the National Games, the state has developed a positive sports environment. The morale of athletes is high, and they are performing well. The government will continue to take big decisions for the development of sports and implement them effectively,' said Pushkar Singh Dhami. The initiatives are taken up to better maintain the sports infrastructure that has already been created and to establish a solid platform for training athletes. Rapid progress is being made in both projects taken up by the government, with the notification for the university already being issued. The 38th National Games were held in Uttarakhand, with the state scoring a century of medals and ranking seventh in the medal tally. The event ultimately led to the establishment of sports infrastructure, marking a milestone in the field of sports. A new sports policy was announced in the state in 2021 that focused on encouraging athletes and included a provision of incentives ranging from Rs 1 crore to Rs 2 crore for Olympic medal winners. The incentive amount has been doubled since then. Government jobs are also offered to athletes who win medals in national and international competitions.

Working towards converting 4,000 schools into a dream hub: Assam CM

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday said that the government has been giving priority to boost the education sector through an overhaul in the school infrastructure across the state. Sarma while inaugurating the newly constructed stadium of Golaghat Government Bezbaruah Higher Secondary School in the Golaghat district, said, 'We have been working to revamp the infrastructure of schools in Assam. The state administration has taken an ambitious plan to convert 4,000 high and higher secondary schools into modern 'dream hubs' by 2035.' He also said each school will receive Rs 8 crore to support extensive renovation and infrastructure upgrades. 'The initiative undertaken goes beyond revamping existing institutions. We have decided to expand educational access across the state by constructing 200 new school buildings every year, covering both urban and rural areas,' Sarma said. The Chief Minister stated that the Golaghat Government Bezbaruah Higher Secondary School occupies a distinguished place in Assam's educational landscape. He noted that the school has, for generations, sustained the tradition of imparting education through the medium of the mother tongue and that numerous alumni have gone on to bring recognition to Assam at both national and international levels. The Chief Minister thanked the Numaligarh Refinery for providing financial assistance of approximately Rs. 3.50 crores under their Corporate Social Responsibility Programme for the project. Referring to the establishment of a sports museum within the complex as an innovative development, he noted that several eminent sportspersons from Assam have contributed medals, jerseys, and sporting equipment to the museum. Sarma expressed hope that the complex would serve as a platform for nurturing sporting talent from the Golaghat district, and further stated that measures were being undertaken to preserve Assam's traditional sports. He added that construction of a new building for the institution, with an allocation of Rs. 8 crores, is progressing swiftly. Responding to suggestions from the school authorities regarding the preservation of the historic school building, the Chief Minister urged the local MLA to take the necessary steps in this regard. Sarma further remarked on the broader development of the Golaghat district, noting progress across multiple sectors. While laying the foundation stone for a project costing Rs 130 crores to provide 24 24-hour drinking water supply to approximately 55,000 residents of Golaghat town from the Dhansiri River, he highlighted the government's commitment to enhancing public utilities. The Chief Minister also cited the establishment of significant infrastructural facilities, including the Golaghat Engineering College, Medical College, Cancer Hospital, the new District Commissioner's Office, and improved road connectivity under the Asom Mala Programme, as evidence of the district's ongoing development.

CSK captain MS Dhoni. (Photo: ANI) Former India captain MS Dhoni had a season to forget in IPL 2025 with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). The 43-year-old was retained as an 'uncapped' player for just Rs 4 crore ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. However, after an injury to regular skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad, Dhoni was forced to take over the reins of the faltering CSK team in the middle of the season. However, Dhoni's 'Midas Touch' as captain deserted him in IPL 2025 as CSK finished in last place in 10th position with just 4 wins to their name. MS Dhoni is known as 'Captain Cool' The Jharkhand wicketkeeper is also known as 'Captain Cool' for his ice-cool nature under pressure. Weeks after the IPL 2025 season got over, Dhoni has made a major move to get a 'trademark' for the 'Captain Cool' property under his name. According to multiple media reports, Dhoni has submitted an application online on June 5 via the Trade Marks Registry portal, with the intention to officially claim ownership of the title that fans and the cricketing fraternity have used for years to define him. 'Delighted to share a recent development from the field of trademark law that underscores the evolving role of personality rights and acquired distinctiveness in overcoming relative grounds for refusal,' said Dhoni's lawyer Mansi Aggarwal. The move to trademark it signals a strategic brand play, likely aimed at leveraging it across categories such as apparel, digital content, and merchandise. Cristiano Ronaldo, Michael Jordan as have their trademarks These kind of business decisions are common among global sports icons. While NBA and basketball legend Michael Jordan capitalised on the 'Jumpman' Air logo on Nike apparel, football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo turned 'CR7' into a business empire Dhoni continues to be a formidable commercial force even post-retirement. He has a brand valuation pegged at Rs 799 crore in 2024 and over 35 major endorsements under his belt. The former India skipper has the record of leading in the most matches in the IPL.
