Indonesia's FM calls for stronger Asean mechanisms after Vision 2045 adoption

The Star07-06-2025
JAKARTA/MANILA (Bernama): Indonesia's Foreign Minister Sugiono has called for strengthening Asean's institutional mechanisms, including its diplomatic corps and central bodies, to effectively implement the Asean Community Vision 2045 adopted at last month's summit in Kuala Lumpur.
At a meeting with the Committee of Permanent Representatives to Asean (CPR) and Timor-Leste's Ambassador to Asean at the Foreign Ministry here, he praised the progress achieved through Asean's cooperation frameworks, especially after the adoption of the Asean Community Vision (ACV) 2045.
He said the long-term vision, adopted at the 46th Asean Summit in Kuala Lumpur last month, outlines a strategic roadmap for the next two decades, envisaging a resilient, innovative, dynamic and people-centred Asean.
"We need to strengthen Asean mechanisms, including the CPR, and bolster the Asean Secretariat and Asean Headquarters in Jakarta to optimise our potential in addressing challenges within the region and globally,' he said.
Sugiono also underscored the CPR's role in fostering community building, facilitating cross-pillar coordination, and engaging with Asean's external partners, as it is essential to achieving the goals of ACV.
He further welcomed Timor-Leste's upcoming accession as Asean's eleventh member state later this year. - Bernama

Strengthen syariah courts to reduce case delays, says ex-CJ

GEORGE TOWN: The syariah judicial system in Malaysia must be reinforced to tackle prolonged case adjournments, ensuring swifter and fairer justice delivery. Former Chief Justice Tun Zaki Azmi highlighted inefficiencies in court administration as a key factor behind delays, particularly in divorce, maintenance, and child custody cases. He stressed that frequent adjournments, often due to absent parties or unjustified requests, waste time and unfairly affect vulnerable individuals. 'Judges must be firm in rejecting weak adjournment pleas. Delayed justice denies justice, and the innocent suffer,' he said. Zaki spoke after presenting 'Memartabatkan Mahkamah Syariah di Malaysia' at the Penang Syariah Law and Judicial Convention. Malaysian Bar Council president Mohamad Ezri Abdul Wahab and Penang Syariah chief judge Za'im Md Yudin were also present. To improve accessibility, he proposed simplifying procedures for those unable to afford legal representation. 'User-friendly templates for filing cases and pro bono legal aid can ease burdens on the underprivileged,' he added. - Bernama

PM Anwar Urges Global Leaders To Halt Gaza Violence

GENERAL KUALA LUMPUR, July 22 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has issued a global call to conscience, urging world leaders to take immediate and united action to stop the humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in Gaza. 'Malaysia calls on all world leaders to act with urgency. Every government that believes in international law, every nation that claims to value human life, must speak with one voice. 'In this regard, I urge all those with influence over Israel to find the courage to act decisively. I especially appeal to US President Donald Trump to use that influence to press for an immediate end to the killing, stop the indiscriminate bombings, and ensure that humanitarian aid reaches those in need without obstruction,' he said in a statement today. Anwar described the tragedy unfolding in Gaza as a test of shared humanity, stressing that the blatant disregard for human life and dignity must end, as it violates the most basic moral principles. 'Entire families are being murdered. Children — even babies — have been killed. Others are wasting away from hunger. 'This is the hour for moral leadership. This is the time to uphold the values we claim to defend,' he said. He said Malaysia stands ready to work with all nations, from North and South, East and West, to bring relief to Gaza and restore the basic principles of humanity. 'Let us not be remembered as those who stood by. Let us be guided by our conscience, to answer suffering with compassion, and to pursue peace for the sake of our humanity,' he added. Earlier, during the Ministers' Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat, Anwar said Malaysia's stance on the Gaza issue, as well as matters concerning Palestine and West Asian countries including Iran, will remain unchanged despite the possibility of facing pressure or objections from the US amid ongoing tariff negotiations, which are expected to continue until August.
