Telangana's EV, electronics sectors feeling the heat of China's export curbs: Sridhar Babu

The Hindu25-06-2025
Industries and IT Minister D. Sridhar Babu met Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Wednesday urging the Centre to immediately intervene and formulate strategic alternatives to mitigate the disruption resulting from China's export restrictions on rare earth elements.
He raised serious concerns over the impact of the restrictions, particularly on the manufacturing ecosystem in Telangana, Mr. Sridhar Babu's office said in a release on the meeting in New Delhi.
Vulnerable sector
Critical inputs such as rare earth magnets, raw materials and specialty chemicals, essential for production of electronics and electric vehicles (EVs) are largely imported from China. The curbs on export of these materials by China recently are having a cascading effect on domestic industries. 'If this trend continues, it will cause significant economic damage — with Telangana's manufacturing sector being particularly vulnerable,' he said in a representation to the Union Minister.
Mr. Sridhar Babu underscored the need for the Centre to urgently assess the ground realities and initiate measures to secure alternative supply chains, ensuring the momentum in electronics and EV manufacturing is not hampered. 'The government must step in to shield our industries from supply shocks,' the Minister said, calling for a national strategy to diversify sourcing and boost domestic capacity.

Ensure success of nation-wide strike: CPI

The Communist Party of India (CPI) Kannur district conference has passed a resolution calling on all pro-people workers organisations to join hands to ensure the success of the nation-wide strike scheduled for July 9. The resolution condemned the Central government's policies as anti-people, anti-worker, and anti-farmer, blaming them for the hardships faced by the people. It said that the neoliberal economic reforms implemented at the behest of global financial powers, had led to the complete surrender of the Indian economy to corporate capital. The CPI accused the Centre of prioritising corporate interests while disregarding the welfare of ordinary citizens. It criticised the privatisation of key public sector institutions, including the Railways and defence production units, which, the party said, were vital to the country's economic self-reliance. Terming the situation grave, the party called for a relentless mass protest to reverse the policies. The party called upon farmers, workers, and traders to actively participate in the strike to send a strong message against what it described as the Centre's corporate-driven agenda.

Meeting with Amit Shah later this month on implementation of Tiprasa Accord: Pradyot

'I don't know about the statement made by our MLA Ranjit Debbarma, but I will surely talk to him. Today, I had a conversation with Chief Minister Manik Saha, and I told him that it has been 18 months since the Tiprasa Accord was signed,' Pradyot Debbarma told reporters. The statement came hours after party MLA Rajit Debbarma threatened to pull out of the BJP-led coalition government in Tripura over the delay in the implementation of the Tiprasa Accord, inked with the Centre and the state government last year for the development of the indigenous people. Agartala, Jul 5 (PTI) Tipra Motha Party (TMP) supremo Pradyot Debbarma on Saturday said a meeting will be held with Union Home Minister Amit Shah later this month on the implementation of the Tiprasa Accord. 'If MLA Debbarma spoke about withdrawing support from the government, it would be out of frustration because a sense of genuine frustration and insecurity is prevailing in the rural areas,' he said. He said the CM gives due importance to the sentiments of the indigenous people, and assured that he will raise the concerns of the TMP at the right platform. 'There will be a high-level meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi later this month on the implementation of the Tiprasa Accord. Since the CM gave assurances, we must wait for that,' he said. Voicing concern over illegal immigration, the TMP chief claimed that people from Bangladesh were still entering the state and trying to settle here, which was creating insecurity among the indigenous people. Earlier, Ranjit Debbarma said the party was ready to withdraw support from the Manik Saha government for not fulfilling the promises regarding the Tiprasa Accord. Even if the TMP withdraws support, the BJP-led government will be comfortably in power as it has 33 MLAs in the 60-member House, besides having the backing of an IPFT legislator. The TMP has 13 lawmakers, while the opposition CPI(M) has 10 and Congress three MLAs. PTI PS SOM This report is auto-generated from PTI news service.
