PTI clarifies incarcerated leaders remain resolute

Express Tribune3 days ago
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has clarified that the letter written by its Punjab leadership, while highlighting the importance of meaningful dialogue, also dispels speculation that its incarcerated leaders had buckled under any pressure.
Speaking to The Express Tribune, PTI's Punjab social media head said the letter, authored by one of the five jailed leaders and delivered to the media through their lawyers, was not making any new demands per se.
He explained that the party seeks to hold negotiations at all levels, including with the powers that be, 'who in reality are running the show and calling the shots'.
He emphasised that the letter's key purpose was to reject the impression that PTI leaders currently behind bars were looking to settle their disputes with state institutions in a bid to end their prolonged incarceration.
'All these five leaders are standing tall, and their commitment to the party's cause remains unwavering,' he said.
The PTI's call for a broader negotiation process comes as the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has already garnered the support of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).
Senior PML-N leader Khawaja Saad Rafique called the PTI letter 'wise and pertinent".
Posting on his social media handles, Saad Rafique wrote: 'The letter from senior PTI leaders imprisoned in Kot Lakhpat Jail in support of the dialogue process between political parties is important and wise. If the PTI founders agree with the opinion of their senior colleagues, then talks can begin.'
However, he added that discussions should be held without preconditions and focus on reducing bitterness through dialogue and gradually easing confrontations. 'If we can talk to enemy countries, why can't we talk to each other?' he wrote.
Rafique noted that Pakistan urgently needs a new and broader democratic charter, stating, 'No discussion can be fruitful without reaching consensus on this. Let's sit down together and decide on the rule of the Constitution in Pakistan, or recite the Fatiha of democracy.'
He further stated that the political forces, both in government and opposition, remain a political reality, regardless of shifting popularity ratings.
'Similarly, denying the power of the establishment is also a denial of reality. The solution to our political crisis will come not through the use of force against force, but through dialogue and deliberation,' he added.
'Whatever solution to differences and complex issues emerges, it will be a step-by-step process. Instead of wasting energy on dragging and tearing each other apart, we should discuss ways to move the country forward,' Rafique said.
Commenting on PTI's announcement to launch a protest movement after Muharram, he said, 'I have no doubt that the protest movement will not be successful, even after Muharram'.
He attributed the expected failure to the harsh weather, PTI's weak organisational structure, internal rifts, and the rigidity of state institutions.
A day earlier, the PPP had also voiced support for initiating a national dialogue process and called for the creation of a new charter akin to the Charter of Democracy.
'Inmate consensus supports talks'
Earlier in the day, PTI leader Shah Mehmood Qureshi urged party chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan and Secretary General Salman Akram Raja to visit him in jail, stating that it was the consensus of the inmates of Kot Lakhpat jail that negotiations should be made.
Speaking to journalists during his jail trial, Qureshi added, 'I will not disclose the name to whom PTI should initiate talks'.
'The timing of things is very important and it matters a lot in politics, so I will disclose the name at the right time,' he added.
Regarding the party's continued struggle for political dialogue, he said, 'We have been talking about negotiations for two years, so what solution is left except protests when no reply is received?'
Qureshi said that PTI's founding chairman, Imran Khan, would ultimately make the final decision on any negotiations. 'We wanted to talk with powerful corridors, but they received a reply that PTI should talk with politicians,' he said.
He noted that confusion had intensified due to the lack of access to Imran Khan. 'They should be given access to Imran Khan so that we could take his view and explain ourselves,' he said.
The seasoned politician said, 'They are in jail and they don't know what is on the ground. I have 42 years' experience in politics". "The country should flourish.'
Dr Yasmeen Rashid, another incarcerated PTI leader, echoed the sentiments of jailed party members. 'We are in jails for the sake of this country, not for mines. We know we had not committed any offence; we know they will punish us, but even then, they are sticking to their stance and not bowing down to their vested interests,' she said.
'I have a lot of educational degrees and I could go to any country for a better life, but I will not do it, as Pakistan is my country and I love it,' she added. 'We talk about the constitution and will get justice through the courts.'

ANP chief decries 'shameful' seats verdict

ANP chief Aimal Wali Khan has lambasted the judiciary for undoing its earlier verdict with regard to allocation of reserved seats to Imran Khan's PTI, stating that the June 28 order of the Supreme Court is even more shameful than the alleged rigging that took place in Feb 8, 2024 general elections. "The buying and selling on February 8 was shameful but the decision on the reserved seats is even more disgraceful," Aimal said on Saturday. "If you have already brought them [PTI lawmakers] in, then go ahead and give them the reserved seats too. You were not afraid back when you handed them 93 MPAs [in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Assembly] because people in uniform managed each and every seat," he claimed. The ruling parties got another victory on the legal front as a constitutional bench (CB) of the SC on June 28 set aside the apex court's July 12, 2024 judgement, which had resurrected the PTI as a parliamentary party and allowed it to get reserved seats in legislatures. The order ended the chance for the PTI to enter parliament. It also affected the Senate election in the K-P Assembly, while also posing existential threat to the PTI government in the K-P. The ANP president also rejected the prime minister's committee formed for the former tribal districts. He said even the nominated chairman of the committee would not be acceptable. "What would members brought in from Punjab know about Pashtun traditions?" he asked. Aimal warned that if there is any backtracking on the 25th Constitutional Amendment then his party would take to the streets. "Even after sacrificing 18 lives, the state remains silent. This is not normal; it is a tragedy." He said there will also be no compromise on the 18th Amendment, which, according to him, was secured by his father, Asfandyar Wali Khan. He lamented that helicopters that did not come for flood victims arrived to transport VIPs.

Bilawal terms July 5 'darkest day'

Pakistan People's Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has termed July 5 as the darkest day of the country's history. In a message on July 5 - the day when the government of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto was toppled by military dictator — the ppp chairman said it was the day when the democratic journey was derailed through tyranny. He said Quaid-e-Awam Zulfikar Ali Bhutto became the voice of voiceless people and gave the poor dignity. The purpose of July 5 tragedy was to stifle the voice of the people and usurped the powers. Despite the tragedy and persecution, the dream of the Quaid-e-Awan remained alive. The dictatorship, which was imposed after July 5, started a series of terrorism and destruction of democratic institutions, highlighted Bilawal. The PPP chairman reiterated to continue the struggle for realization of Benazir Bhutto and Zulfikar Ali Bhutto's dream. The vision envisages the people of Pakistan powerful and the Constitution supreme. He said the PPP never compromised on principles despite its leaders and workers languished in jails. He expressed his resolve to continue the struggle until Pakistan becomes democratic, peaceful and prosperous country.

Pakistanis' extradition to India: PTI denounces Bilawal's stance

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Saturday denounced Bilawal Bhutto Zardari's shockingly appeasing, submissive and apologetic stance, particularly his offer to extradite Pakistani citizens to India under the guise of a so-called confidence-building measure (CBM) — a country that remained actively engaged in state-sponsored terrorism, espionage and subversive activities against Pakistan. Speaking at a presser, PTI spokesman Sheikh Waqas Akram stated that Bilawal was an 'immature political child', stating that such irresponsible, ill-advised and sweeping statements not only damage Pakistan's national security narrative but also humiliate the country on international platforms. He lamented that the surrogates imposed upon the nation through electoral fraud, had brought Pakistan to its knees, which completely politically destabilized and economically devastated – solely to cling to power. 'We fail to understand why Bilawal is so keen on appeasing India,' he asked. He stated that Bilawal was proving time and again that he lacked political wisdom, vision and understanding of regional geopolitics. Instead of holding India accountable for its continued aggression, water terrorism and cross-border interference, Bilawal was proposing CBMs that compromise Pakistan's sovereignty and integrity, he said. Bilawal urges UN to press India for comprehensive dialogue He emphasised that it was imperative to ask Bilawal on whose behalf he issued such a statement and what he intended to achieve by offering such concessions to a belligerent India by humiliating Pakistan on an international stage. He further criticised Bilawal's flip-flop from threatening India with war to begging for peace, saying PPP chairman became a symbol of inconsistency, confusion and contradiction in Pakistan's foreign policy discourse. PPP was founded by Zulfikar Ali Bhutto on the legacy of Kashmir, but today, Bilawal is betraying that legacy by pursuing political gains at the expense of Kashmiri blood, he stated. He said that leaders were born, not made through makeup and forced media appearances. 'If PPP's intelligentsia truly cares about Bilawal, they should let him contest local body elections first and appear on regional TV channels instead of being pushed on international media, where he only embarrasses Pakistan,' PTI CIS stated. He asserted that Bilawal was an 'immature political child' who would lead PPP to complete elimination, advising that if the party wanted to survive, he must step aside and hand over chairmanship to Aseefa Bhutto, who, at the very least, showed more promise and sense than him. He said that those encouraging him to go global were not his friends – they were his political undertakers, because pushing him into the limelight without proper grooming, only to expose his incompetence. Shifting focus to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, he cautioned against any covert or overt attempts to destabilise the democratically elected PTI government in the province. He vowed that PTI would resist any such move tooth and nail, as the people of KP have given their mandate to PTI, and they would not allow surrogate rulers to be imposed in KP like elsewhere in the country. He said the people of KP have already suffered enough due to military operations, exploitation of resources and broken promises and PTI would not allow any such misadventure again in the region. He reminded the centre of the disastrous consequences of past military operations in tribal areas, which brought nothing but destruction, displacement and resentment among tribal people. Therefore, he pressed that instead of repeating failed strategies, the government must prioritise development, infrastructure, education and economic uplift in neglected region. He emphasised that the solution to Pakistan's internal challenges lied in respecting democracy, empowering provinces and investing in neglected regions, not through coercion and brute force. Turning to the government's economic mismanagement and flawed foreign investment strategy, he pointed out that while the government loudly trumpeted its claims of attracting foreign investment through the much-hyped SIFC, the ground reality tells a different story. Waqas stated that multinational companies were shutting down their operations due to flawed, shortsighted and self-serving policies — the closure of Microsoft's office in Pakistan speaks volumes in this regard. Expressing surprise over government double-standard, he said that Pakistan's trade with India surged quietly, yet trade with brotherly neighbour Afghanistan remained suspended, which was not only unjust but also economically suicidal. Waqas demanded that trade with Afghanistan be immediately resumed to benefit the people of Pakistan and the bordering tribal areas, adding that the imposed regime's anti-people policies were destroying livelihoods of the people. Akram vowed that the party would fight till the last ball against the current authoritarian regime. He stated that PTI Patron-in-chief Imran Khan, his wife Bushra Bibi and other PTI leadership were facing politically motivated and fabricated cases, but PTI would not back down. Waqas made it clear that they would not rest until release unlawfully incarcerated PTI founder and other leaders, establish the rule of law, constitutional supremacy, and true democracy in Pakistan.
