Delhi Capitals skipper Axar Patel misses his second consecutive IPL 2025 match due to illness, with Faf du Plessis captaining against Punjab Kings.
Delhi Capitals (DC) skipper Axar Patel is missing a second consecutive match in IPL 2025, with Faf du Plessis captaining the team against Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur on Saturday (May 24).
Axar has been said to be dealing with illness in the last few days and was also unavailable from the team's match against the Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium on May 21. On the eve of the match, assistant coach Matthew Mott had said he didn't know whether Axar would be available to play but mentioned that the all-rounder had not trained.
'The honest answer is I don't fully know," Mott told the media. 'He's not training today. But, we'll find out when we get back there today. Obviously, he wasn't well the other day. He's had a pretty rugged time with a few different little niggle and injuries. I'm sure he's motivated to come out and play, but we'll probably know a little bit more tonight when we go back and see the medical stuff."

After the loss against MI, which ended DC's hopes of qualifying for the playoffs, du Plessis emphasised that Axar had been 'very, very sick'. He also rued his absence in a match where MI's left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner bowled a winning spell of 3/11.
'Yeah, I think especially [missed] Axar on a wicket like that," du Plessis said after the match. 'If you look at the way that Mitch Santner bowled, they're very similar bowlers. To bowl four overs, I think [Santner] only went for ten runs. Axar is that kind of class bowler, international, proven left-arm spinner that on a wicket like that, he would love to bowl in it. But unfortunately, he was very, very sick the last two days."
In Axar's absence, Kuldeep Yadav and all-rounder Vipraj Nigam will have to shoulder the responsibility of spin.
Meanwhile, PBKS are also missing leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal. Shreyas Iyer didn't mention any reason for his absence during the toss. The same goes for DC's Abhishek Porel.

WATCH: Shreyas Iyer gets ‘clean bowled' by his mother while playing cricket in living room

With experts advocating for Shreyas Iyer's inclusion in India's ongoing Test series against England, the batter was seen having a relaxing time with his family in their home, playing cricket with his mother. In a video shared by Punjab Kings, Iyer's IPL franchise, the PBKS captain was facing deliveries from his mother in the living room with one delivery even breaching his defence. 'Only time SARPANCH won't mind getting bowled!,' Punjab Kings posted on X, sharing the video. His mother gleefully celebrated as she shouted 'out' with the video ending soon after. Shreyas and his parents share a pretty comfortable bond with his parents taking pride in narrating the pranks their children play on them to visitors. When The Indian Express visited their home once, the father spoke of how Shreyas was in the habit of fooling them on phone. He once faked an English accent to check if his father was traveling to the UK to watch his son play a county game. When his mother is in the kitchen, Shreyas's 'what's cooking' inquiry is unique: 'Aaj kya bigaad rahi ho (what meal are you spoiling today)'. But still Shreyas might be the only Indian cricketer who still gets dropped to the airport by both his parents. Only time SARPANCH won't mind getting bowled! 😂♥️ — Punjab Kings (@PunjabKingsIPL) June 30, 2025 Meanwhile, there were questions raised over Iyer's exclusion from India's extensive 18-member squad announced in May, and the situation sparked more questions about the 30-year-old's red-ball future at the international level. Iyer was in blistering form in the IPL, leading Punjab Kings to a runners-up finish with his best season with the bat, scoring 604 runs at a 50-plus average and a staggering 175.07 strike rate with 39 sixes. Iyer also had a productive Ranji Trophy season besides leading Mumbai to the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy win in December 2024. In nine First Class matches, including an Irani Cup triumph, Iyer aggregated 699 runs with two centuries and three fifties. However, that would not be enough to make a comeback to the Test squad for Iyer, who last represented India during the 2024 home series against England. Chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar had reasoned that there was no room currently for Iyer in the scheme of things despite his solid form at the domestic level. 'Yes, Shreyas Iyer has played well in domestic cricket, but at the moment, there is no room for him on the Test Team,' he said while speaking to reporters in Mumbai when announcing the Test squad in late May.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi's Reaction Can't Be Missed After Fiery Send-Off By England Pacer

The second Youth ODI encounter between India U19 and England U19 on Monday witnessed a fiery exchange as pacer Jack Home gave a send-off to Vaibhav Suryavanshi. Suryavanshi, the 14-year-old sensation who impressed everyone during IPL 2025, looked in brilliant touch as he slammed 45 off just 34 deliveries. It looked like the youngster was destined for a massive knock but he was caught in the deep off the bowling of Home. The England pacer was ecstatic after taking the wicket as he stopped right in front of the batter and gave him a passionate send-off. Vaibhav was visibly disappointed by the dismissal as he stood at the crease for some time before making his way back to the dressing room. India's Under-19 team made a commanding start to their five-match Youth ODI series against England with a six-wicket win at Hove, chasing down 175 in just 24 overs at the County Ground, Hove. The star of the show was 14-year-old sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who blazed 48 off just 19 balls in his debut innings on English soil, smashing five sixes and three fours to set the tone for India's emphatic victory. Suryavanshi, already a record-breaker as the youngest century-maker in men's T20s thanks to his Indian Premier League (IPL) heroics for Rajasthan Royals earlier this year, looked unstoppable during his brief but electric stay at the crease. He and captain Ayush Mhatre added 71 in 7.3 overs for the second wicket, dismantling the English attack before Suryavanshi holed out off Ralphie Albert after an explosive cameo. India's chase had its stumbles after Suryavanshi's departure, losing a few quick wickets, but wicketkeeper Abhigyan Kundu steadied the innings with an unbeaten 45 to see the visitors home with 26 overs to spare. Earlier, England opted to bat but were bundled out for a modest 174 in 42.2 overs. Only Rocky Flintoff (56) and Isaac Mohammed (42) offered resistance. Mohammed, making his debut, sparkled briefly with four sixes and three fours in a 28-ball onslaught, showcasing his talent with aggressive strokes before falling attempting one big hit too many. Dhoni makes a BIG move after IPL 2025 season, he has decided to…

CSK captain MS Dhoni. (Photo: ANI) Former India captain MS Dhoni had a season to forget in IPL 2025 with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). The 43-year-old was retained as an 'uncapped' player for just Rs 4 crore ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. However, after an injury to regular skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad, Dhoni was forced to take over the reins of the faltering CSK team in the middle of the season. However, Dhoni's 'Midas Touch' as captain deserted him in IPL 2025 as CSK finished in last place in 10th position with just 4 wins to their name. MS Dhoni is known as 'Captain Cool' The Jharkhand wicketkeeper is also known as 'Captain Cool' for his ice-cool nature under pressure. Weeks after the IPL 2025 season got over, Dhoni has made a major move to get a 'trademark' for the 'Captain Cool' property under his name. According to multiple media reports, Dhoni has submitted an application online on June 5 via the Trade Marks Registry portal, with the intention to officially claim ownership of the title that fans and the cricketing fraternity have used for years to define him. 'Delighted to share a recent development from the field of trademark law that underscores the evolving role of personality rights and acquired distinctiveness in overcoming relative grounds for refusal,' said Dhoni's lawyer Mansi Aggarwal. MS Dhoni has applied for Word Mark – Captain Cool 🔥 Trademark Class 41 covers services related to education, training, entertainment, sporting & cultural activities. It's applied only for Sports Training, Sports Training facilities and sports coaching services. — WhistlePodu Army ® – CSK Fan Club (@CSKFansOfficial) June 30, 2025 Over the years, Dhoni has been become synonymous with the nickname 'Captain Cool'. It sums up his calmness under pressure, from guiding India to the 2007 T20 World Cup title to lifting the 2011 ODI World Cup and clinching the ICC Champions Trophy in 2013. The move to trademark it signals a strategic brand play, likely aimed at leveraging it across categories such as apparel, digital content, and merchandise. Cristiano Ronaldo, Michael Jordan as have their trademarks These kind of business decisions are common among global sports icons. While NBA and basketball legend Michael Jordan capitalised on the 'Jumpman' Air logo on Nike apparel, football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo turned 'CR7' into a business empire Dhoni continues to be a formidable commercial force even post-retirement. He has a brand valuation pegged at Rs 799 crore in 2024 and over 35 major endorsements under his belt. The former India skipper has the record of leading in the most matches in the IPL. Dhoni has captained in 235 matches in the IPL with 136 wins and 97 losses. Rohit Sharma is way behind him in second place on the list with 158 matches as captain and Virat Kohli is in third place with 143 matches in charge in IPL.
