Engineering student ends life over prolonged harassment over debt repayment
A 20-year-old engineering student ended his life at his residence in Bahadurpally after reportedly facing prolonged harassment over debts incurred through betting apps. The deceased, identified as T. Ramakanth, a second-year B. Tech student at Malla Reddy University, was found dead in his room on Monday morning. His father, Thotapalli Thirupathi, a farmer, lodged a complaint with the police following the incident. According to the complainant, Ramakanth had been struggling with financial pressure for several months. He had informed his father on multiple occasions about debts he had incurred through a betting app. Nearly a month ago, Ramakanth told his father that he owed ₹34,000, which had been paid off to an individual named Gnaneshwar. However, Gnaneshwar allegedly continued to demand interest payment. The father further stated that around three months ago, Ramakanth had another debt of ₹10,000. Following this, individuals associated with the debt allegedly entered his room and seized his friend's laptop and mobile phone. On July 13, at around 2 p.m., Ramakanth again contacted his father asking for money. The next morning, around 8:00 a.m., he made another call, stating that he was being harassed for repayment. Later that day, he took the drastic step. Ramakanth was shifted to a private hospital in Bahadurpally, where he was declared dead. A case was booked, and an investigation is underway. Row erupts after 9 workers from West Bengal detained in Chhattisgarh for ‘not producing documents'
A political row has erupted over the detention of nine migrant workers from West Bengal in Chhattisgarh's Kondagaon district for allegedly staying there for several days without submitting documents to local authorities, The Indian Express reported on Tuesday. Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra described the detention as a case of 'state-sponsored kidnapping' by the Chhattisgarh government and the police. The Kondagaon Police told The Hindu that the nine men were detained on Saturday and released on Monday. Superintendent of Police Akshay Kumar said that the workers were residing in the district for the past three months but had not informed their local police station despite repeated announcements. 'Day before yesterday, we found them during patrolling,' The Hindu quoted Kumar as having said on Monday. 'When we asked for their names and IDs they did not produce and started misbehaving with us.' Kumar added that the police prepared a memorandum and produced the men before the sub-divisional magistrate. Following this, the men were detained under a section of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita that allows a magistrate to order persons suspected of concealing their presence to commit a cognisable offense to execute a bond for good behaviour. The superintendent of police added that all nine men had been released and that it was up to them if they wanted to stay in Kondagaon or return to West Bengal, The Hindu reported. A habeas corpus petition was filed in the matter before the Chhattisgarh High Court on Monday, The Indian Express reported. On Monday, Moitra said that the Chhattisgarh Police had detained the men, all residents of her Krishnanagar constituency in West Bengal, despite them having gone to the state through a labour contractor and with documentation and verification. The men were working as masons at a private school on a construction site in Kondagaon's Albedapada, the MP added. 'On July 12, police came to the site where they were staying and picked them up,' Moitra alleged. 'All of them had valid documents. Their mobiles phones have been switched off. We have got information from their family members that they have been put in Jagdalpur jail in the neighbouring [Bastar] district.' Moitra added that neither the Bengal government nor their families were informed about the detention. 'We have not got a copy of the detention order or a hearing; they had no access to a lawyer or a phone call,' she said. 'They say they have been released, but there is no mobile phone contact.' Claiming that the Kondagaon superintendent of police had told her that he did not want the workers in the district, the Trinamool Congress MP asked why Indian citizens who were working legally needed to leave the state. The allegations came nearly a month after four men from West Bengal, who had been picked up by the Maharashtra Police and 'pushed' into Bangladesh, were brought back on June 15. The Murshidabad Police in West Bengal had presented proof of them being Indian citizens. Over the past month, Indian authorities have been pursuing a policy to 'push' individuals claimed to be undocumented migrants into Bangladesh. Many of those 'pushed' into the country claim they are Indian citizens. India has 'pushed back' more than 2,000 persons into Bangladesh since the country launched ' Operation Sindoor ', a military operation against terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The legality of the 'push back' policy has been debated in India and internationally. Experts have told Scroll that the policy violated India's obligations under international law and customary international law.

Kanwariyas attack car in Ghaziabad as police look on
A group of Kanwariyas allegedly vandalised a car with sticks and baseball bats in full public view in Ghaziabad's Modinagar on Sunday afternoon, even as police stood by. No complaint was received in the matter and so the Kanwariyas were allowed to continue their journey, senior police officers said later. A video of the incident shows a mob vandalising a car on a busy street. (HT photo) According to police, the incident happened around 3pm Sunday when Nitin Kumar, a Kanwariya from Delhi's Uttam Nagar, was resting on a road divider in Modinagar. A Swift car reportedly hit the divider near him, prompting other Kanwariyas to assume that Kumar had been injured. Police said this triggered a rampage and Kanwariyas started vandalising the car using baseball bats and sticks. .Videos of the incident surfaced on Monday, showing the car surrounded by Kanwariyas and local residents. Several policemen appear present but uninvolved. HT could not independently verify the authenticity of the videos. 'The car hit the divider where a Kanwariya was resting. Others assumed he was hurt and damaged the vehicle. Police pacified them and they moved on. No complaint has been received so far. We will examine if an FIR can be lodged,' said Surendra Nath Tiwary, deputy commissioner of police (rural). This is the second such incident in Modinagar this month. On the night of July 8, Kanwariyas from Haryana allegedly assaulted a car driver and vandalised his Swift after it brushed past one of them. Police later said the driver was drunk and booked him under section 170 of the Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) for preventive arrest. In response to the incidents, Ghaziabad police have imposed major traffic diversions. The Meerut-Ghaziabad carriageway has been reserved for returning Kanwariyas since Monday afternoon, and the entry of heavy vehicles has been restricted on the Delhi-Meerut Road, Delhi-Meerut Expressway, and Muradnagar–Tila Morh routes from July 11. 'Light vehicles and two-wheelers going to and coming from Meerut will be allowed on both sides of the Ghaziabad-Meerut carriageway. Cones have been installed to separate the two directions and traffic police are on the ground to ensure smooth flow,' said additional DCP (traffic) Sacchidanand.
