Ryan Gosling stars in 'Project Hail Mary': See trailer, cast, release date
Based on Andy Weir's epic sci-fi adventure novel, Amazon MGM Studios' latest movie adaptation stars the three-time Oscar nominee as a middle school teacher who is sent to space as the world comes to an end.
As the trailer posted Monday, June 30 shows, middle school teacher Ryland Grace, played by Gosling, must see if humanity can survive somewhere else in space after the sun and every other star begins to die for unknown reasons. In space, he discovers and befriends an extraterrestrial being he names Rocky.
Despite having no experience as a astronaut, Gosling's character is understandably out of his depth, telling officials, "I put the not in astronaut. I've never done anything. I've never done a space walk. I can't even moonwalk. "
"It's an insanely ambitious story, expansive in scope," Gosling said in April during a CinemaCon presentation. "Literally, we tried to put it on a TV once. It didn't fit."
Moviegoers can expect to see familiar faces, including Academy-Award nominee Sandra Hüller, "The Bear" actor Lionel Boyce and "Industry" star Ken Leung.
Here's what to know about the upcoming project.

Miley Cyrus, Timothée Chalamet and Demi Moore to receive stars on Hollywood Walk of Fame
A few new stars are set to appear on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Miley Cyrus, Timothée Chalamet and Demi Moore were among the 35 honorees announced this morning by Eugenio Derbez and Richard Blade. Inductees were selected across five categories: motion pictures, television, live theater and live performance, recording and sports entertainment. There were no radio honorees. Others who made the class of 2026 include actors Emily Blunt, Rachel McAdams, Molly Ringwald, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Rami Malek and Noah Wyle; former NBA star turned sports analyst Shaquille O'Neal; and 'Good Morning America' co-anchors Robin Roberts and George Stephanopoulos, who will have a double ceremony. Italian special effects artist Carlo Rambaldi and director Tony Scott will be posthumously honored. Cyrus, who released her ninth studio album, 'Something Beautiful,' in May, rolled around the Walk of Fame for the music video for her aptly titled single 'Walk of Fame,' later revealing on 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!' that she developed an infection on her kneecap from the bacteria on the famed Hollywood Boulevard sidewalk. Still, the singer shared some of the footage on Instagram shortly after her star was announced. 'When I first came to LA from Nashville as a little girl, my family would stay at a hotel on Hollywood Blvd, and I would go on late night walks with my dad when no one would recognize him. We'd have the gift shops to ourselves & buy knock off Oscars and Marilyn Monroe merchandise,' she wrote. 'To now be cemented on this legendary boulevard, surrounded by the icons who inspired me, feels like a dream.' Meanwhile, Chalamet is coming off the success of the Bob Dylan biopic 'A Complete Unknown.' He earned an Oscar nomination for his role as the legendary singer-songwriter. He's set to begin filming the third installment of the 'Dune' film franchise, titled 'Dune: Messiah,' this summer, according to Deadline. Moore, who rose to prominence with the 1985 film 'St. Elmo's Fire,' earned her first Oscar nomination this year for her role in 'The Substance,' in which she starred opposite Margaret Qualley. She and Ringwald will be the latest of the Brat Pack to join the Walk of Fame, following Rob Lowe in 2015. It's also a family affair for Blunt and brother-in-law Stanley Tucci, who appeared in 'The Devil Wears Prada' together and are set to return for the sequel. Once selected, honorees are expected to cover an $85,000 sponsorship fee to pay for the creation and installation of the star, as well as maintenance of the Walk of Fame. Recipients have up to two years to schedule their ceremonies before the offer expires. As ‘The Bear' gets picked up for another season, it sinks to 4th place in our Emmy predictions: Behind the free fall
Less than a week after Season 4 of The Bear made its debut — prompting much media hand-wringing over whether the prestige restaurant-based dramedy was ending for good — FX has shut down the speculation, announcing that Season 5 has been greenlit. 'The Bear continues to be a fan-favorite worldwide and their response to this season — as seen through incredibly high viewership — has been as spectacular as any of its previous seasons,' John Landgraf, chairman of FX, said in a statement. 'Year-in and year-out, [creator] Chris Storer, the producers, cast and crew make The Bear one of the best shows on television, and we are excited that they will continue to tell this magnificent story.' More from Gold Derby Don't cry for Rachel Zegler! Star's big moment goes viral as first 'Evita' reviews praised her 'enthralling' and 'phenomenal' performance Inside that surprise 'Ironheart' cameo - and how it could net the Marvel show an Emmy nod (spoilers) But are Emmy voters losing their appetite? The Bear began this Emmy cycle simmering nicely in second place for Best Comedy Series, according to Gold Derby's experts, editors, and users. The series won the top prize in 2023, but was upset in 2024 by Hacks, which is now expected to prevail again. Over the past few months, The Bear has seen its Emmy prospects drop to third place (behind The Studio) and now to fourth (behind Only Murders in the Building). First things first, remember that Television Academy members are voting on Season 3, which streamed in June 2024, even though Season 4 came out last week. (The Emmy eligibility period is June 1 through May 31.) But that doesn't mean subpar reviews for the new episodes won't cloud voters' judgment. After all, the prevailing theory is that Liza Colón-Zayas won Best Supporting Actress last year for Season 2 because she had a showcase Season 3 episode that aired around voting time. The fourth season opens with a flashback of Carmy (Jeremy Allen White) pitching the idea of opening a restaurant to Mikey (Jon Bernthal), who is revealed to have come up with the name "The Bear." Fast-forwarding to the present day, The Chicago Tribune has dished out a review praising the food but knocking the restaurant's chaotic atmosphere and inconsistent menu. Through the years, The Bear has experienced a noticeable dip among critics and fans. Season 1's 100 percent score at Rotten Tomatoes was followed by additional courses of 99 percent for Season 2, 89 percent for Season 3, and now 85 percent for Season 4. Viewers and awards commentators have also been increasingly vocal about the show's so-called "category fraud": The Bear has competed as a comedy series even though many critics consider the series a half-hour drama. Only Murders in the Building has experienced a similar downturn in its critical reception, but not nearly to the same extent as The Bear. Season 1 received the rare 100 percent score, while Season 2 slipped to 98 percent, Season 3 was a notch down to 97 percent, and Season 4 settled for 93 percent. The fourth season of Hulu's whodunit caper is eligible at the 2025 Emmys, after coming off major wins at the Screen Actors Guild Awards for Best Comedy Ensemble and Best Comedy Actor for Martin Short. And then there's Hacks. Max's hit comedy about a veteran Las Vegas comedian (Jean Smart) and her young writer (Hannah Einbinder) has been embraced as the best comedy on television. Seasons 1 and 2 both earned 100 percent, while Season 3 and 4 both received 98 percent. To date, Smart is undefeated at the Emmys in Best Comedy Actress, going three-for-three, while Einbinder is looking for her first supporting victory on her fourth try. Rookie series The Studio from Apple TV+ checked in with 93 percent at Rotten Tomatoes. Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg's satirical comedy chronicles what really goes on behind the scenes in Hollywood, from promoting films, to notes from executives, to the dramatic casting process, to attending awards shows. There will be eight slots for Best Comedy Series at the 2025 Emmys. Here is the current predicted lineup, according to Gold Derby: Hacks The Studio Only Murders in the Building The Bear Nobody Wants This Abbott Elementary Shrinking What We Do in the Shadows Rounding out the Top 13 are The Four Seasons, A Man on the Inside, Somebody Somewhere, Agatha All Along, and Poker Face. Conflicting Russell Wilson Buzz Could Spark a Wild Summer
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. No one has ever denied there are certain perks that come along with being QB1 of the New York Giants. Russell Wilson is learning that first-hand. If he delivers some wins, he'll only become more popular, but in the meantime, however, he's blowing off some steam. He may as well. Once training camp begins, the pressure cooker is turned up higher, but by the looks of things, the veteran isn't showing the signs we'd expect from a man who has been given up on by two franchises in three seasons. (Photo byfor YouTube Music) (Photo byfor YouTube Music) Photo byfor YouTube Music In a tad over four months, we have seen Russell Wilson courtside at a New York Knicks game. He's been seen at the most recent Met Gala, Fanatics Fest, and a Vanity Fair Oscar party. He's certainly having the time of his life. Must read: Kayvon Thibodeaux's Long-Held Promise Haunts in a Crucial Year Good for him! It's the offseason. Guys can't pump iron or workout with their receivers every waking moment of every day, right? They just better be ready when the rookies report to Giants training camp on July 15 and the veterans report on July 22. All eyes will be on Wilson. That's the price of playing in the Big Apple and for winning a Super Bowl and blowing another... No, we haven't forgotten about any of that. So, what's to be expected? That will be an intriguing discussion for the rest of the summer as trusted voices are already on opposite sides of the expectation spectrum. Must read: A Giants Backup Role Might Not Fit Jaxson Dart's Grand Vision Varying theories surround Giants QB1 Russell Wilson "What Russell Wilson brings to the Giants is something they haven't had since Eli Manning." Those are the words of Dan Salomone, senior managing editor of as he quoted general manager Joe Schoen. NFL Network mainstay Ian Rapoport offers a slightly different theory. He mentioned, during a recent episode of The Insiders that it isn't a matter of 'if' Jaxson Dart will replace him. It's simply a matter of 'when'. From The Insiders on @NFLNetwork: #Giants QB Jaxson Dart has impressed early, and it's not hard to see coach Brian Daboll is a believer. — Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) June 17, 2025 Well, we all knew Dart was the long-term answer and Wilson was the projected starter and QB1 of the moment, correct? Wilson has had a great career, but the clock is ticking. Despite earning another Pro Bowl nod last season, his tenth, he wasn't at his best down the stretch for the Pittsburgh Steelers, and he appears to be living off of reputation now more than anything. Dart turned 22 years old this past May. He's been given the 'golden-child' treatment, but he isn't the perfect candidate for a starting role in Big Blue either. Daboll has raved about him at every turn, but there are questions about how he might adjust to NFL-style offenses and defenses after from Lane Kiffin's one-read offense. Russell is interesting. Every critique is different. Some like and are pumped about New York's decision to acquire him. Others would be more inclined to agree with Rapoport, also adding that Dart's time will arrive sooner than expected. Must read: ESPN's All Quarter Century NFL Team Has a Giant-Sized Mystery It's hard to disagree with the latter contingent. That's especially true when you consider the warm seat Giants head coach Brian Daboll is sitting on and the one-year, $10.5 million contract 'DangeRuss' signed in March. If things go haywire, look for the youngster to get some early snaps if it is ever deemed New York's season is on life support or over.
