Steelers countdown to kickoff — No. 71: a history of the number and who wore it best
The Steelers countdown to kickoff is here — and we're at 71 days until Pittsburgh faces off against the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium. In the spirit of the countdown, we're taking a look at the history of No. 71 and the players who wore it best.
Current Steelers No. 71 wearer: OG Aiden Williams
Following the 2025 NFL Draft, Williams signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers as an undrafted free agent. He played six seasons for Minnesota-Duluth (2019–2024) and appeared in 40 games — starting all 40. According to the Steelers' official team website, Williams was named a 2024 AFCA First Team All-American, a 2024 Don Hansen NCAA DII Honorable Mention All-American, and a 2025 East-West Shrine Bowl invitee. Pittsburgh has found hidden gems at guard before — but for Williams to fit this trend, he'll have to compete with backup guards Max Scharping and Spencer Anderson for a roster spot.
Last five Steelers to wear No. 71:
Best No. 71 in Steelers history: OT Charlie Bradshaw
Bradshaw is without a doubt the best Steeler to wear the No. 71 — earning two Pro Bowl selections during his time in Pittsburgh from 1961 to 1966. Bradshaw was the anchor at the offensive tackle position, playing in 82 games for Pittsburgh — 80 of which came as starts. He was ultimately named to the Pittsburgh Steelers Legends — a selection of the franchise's best players before the 1970s.

Andrew Mukuba shares his gameplan for becoming one of the NFL's top safeties
Andrew Mukuba is already thinking like one of the game's elite players. So, how good is Andrew Mukuba? It is becoming more evident that conversations about the Philadelphia Eagles' safety all lead back to that question. He's a second-round pick, the 64th player taken during the most recent NFL Draft. He's expected to fill the void created by C.J. Gardner-Johnson's departure. Lance Zierlein gave him a grade of 6.20 in his pre-draft profile, meaning he believes Mukuba will eventually become an average starter. 'Average' isn't how many describe his game, though. He may have been taken at the end of Round 2, but some draft pundits gave him late first-round grades. Some have called him undersized. At six feet tall, he stands an inch taller than Gardner-Johnson and two inches taller than Sydney Brown, but he's 20 pounds lighter than both of them. He's a former collegiate teammate of both Will Shipley and Jeremiah Trotter Jr. "You have to be able to do everything – cover in the passing game, support the run, tackle, and you have to know everybody's assignments and where you are supposed to be. It is important to learn the defense, and that is the first priority. You do that, and then your physical ability takes care of itself." Those were Mukuba's words as he spoke with Eagles insider Dave Spadaro about what is required to be a great NFL safety. That sounds about right. Mukuba has proven his mettle collegiately in both the ACC and SEC. He earned ACC Defensive Rookie of the Year, Third-Team All-ACC honors, and Freshman All-American honors in 2021. He was named a Third-Team All-SEC honoree in 2024. None of that will help him at football's highest level. The good news, however, is that his mindset will. What does he promise that Birds fans will see in his performance? Eagles fans will undoubtedly love his answer: "There are guys like Budda Baker (Arizona Cardinals) and Brian Branch (Detroit Lions) who are similar in size to me and they have been guys I've kind of patterned myself after. I'm going to be aggressive and smart and play with everything I have, all my heart." That's a great start! "I have a lot of energy and always have had energy, and so for me to go out on the field and have fun, it's kind of like being in the park with your friends playing ball and being physical and helping my team win. That's all that matters – helping the Eagles win. I want to do my part, perfect my role, and enjoy everything about being a Philadelphia Eagle." Forget everything you've heard about his size or his tendency to miss tackles. That's all we had to read. He's going to be fine. Rarely are players polished when they reach the NFL. Most have something they need to work on. It's no different than Drew Mukuba, but everything seen and heard seems to be a step in the right direction. With his mindset, he will be fine. There's no doubt about it.

Valtteri Bottas Linked to Alpine F1 Team Amid Cadillac Rumors
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Mercedes reserve driver Valtteri Bottas has been linked to a potential move to the Alpine Formula One team in 2026. The report arrives amid talks of him being considered for a seat in the Cadillac F1 team next year, marking the outfit's debut and the beginning of a new era of regulations in the sport. Bottas was dropped by Sauber at the end of 2024. Since then, he has been a reserve driver with Mercedes, a team he raced for from 2017 to 2021. The Finn is keen on a full-time seat with one of the teams on the grid, but with a competitive driver market, Cadillac looked to be ideal way to get back. However, according to a report by The Race, Bottas could be an Alpine F1 driver by the end of this year if the Enstone-based outfit decides to drop Franco Colapinto. For the same reason, Alpine's executive advisor and interim team principal, Flavio Briatore, held talks with Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff on Bottas' availability. Valtteri Bottas of Finland and Mercedes look son in the paddock during previews ahead of the F1 Grand Prix of Emilia-Romagna at Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari on May 15, 2025 in Imola, Italy. MoreWhile talks have not reached an advanced stage, the reports suggest Briatore's interest in signing Bottas for the future. The shift from Mercedes to Alpine could be a smooth one for the 35-year-old driver, since Alpine is set to become a Mercedes customer team next year. However, it remains to be seen if racing for Alpine is something that appeals to Bottas. If Bottas got really lucky, he could find himself with two offers on the table - one from Alpine and another from Cadillac. However, he has given himself the time until August of this year to finalize his future. Newsweek Sports reported Bottas' comments from a recent interview, where he revealed his interest in Cadillac. He said: "I think they have a few drivers on the list. I would imagine my experience will help because now I've raced in three different teams, with one of the teams having mega success. With Williams as well, we had some great results, so I hope I'm in a good position. "I know my timeline, when I want to know about next year and what plans I need to make, which I think is more or less August, which is a pretty good target for that, and hopefully, we'll hear something more soon. "For me, I actually see a very interesting project, something new to F1, an American team with maybe a different view to the sport. "If I were there as a driver, it would be very interesting because you can start from scratch. "The team starts from zero. You could actually make a big influence on certain things, which direction to go, and that would be very motivating and rewarding when the success comes. "I think the rule change is always a good point to jump in because you just never know, if you suddenly get it right, you might actually be doing really well from the get-go."
