Over 500 personnel to be deployed in Aluva for ‘Karkidaka Vavu Bali'
The Rural police will deploy around 500 police personnel in Aluva. A meeting to review the arrangements was chaired by District Police Chief (Ernakulam Rural) M. Hemalatha at Aluva on Saturday. More cops will be deployed along the bus stand, railway station and metro stations.
More patrol teams will be deployed, and the District Anti-Narcotics Special Action Force will be roped in to curb drug sales and consumption. Plainclothesmen will be stationed to preempt thefts. A control room will be set up at Aluva Manappuram and will function round the clock. Traffic regulations will be enforced to prevent congestion, while CCTV cameras will be installed at strategic locations.
The district administration is in the process of making elaborate arrangements at Aluva Manappuram, Perumbavoor Chelamattam Sree Krishna Temple, and along the banks of the Periyar in Kalady, taking into account the incessant rain.
A review meeting attended by Anwar Sadath, MLA, and Additional District Magistrate Vinod Raj was held on Saturday. Arrangements will be made to offer 'bali' at Aluva Adwaithasramam from the morning. The offering of bali at the Perumbavoor Chelamattam Sree Krishna Temple will begin at 1 a.m. and continue till the afternoon. Special KSRTC services will be operated from the Angamaly and Perumbavoor depots.
The Irrigation department will monitor the water level in the Periyar at frequent intervals and take necessary precautions. The District Medical Officer has been directed to deploy staff and ambulance services to handle emergencies.
Fire and Rescue Services personnel will be deployed to avert accidents. The KSEB has been directed to arrange temporary power supply and ensure the presence of additional staff. Steps have been taken to ensure drinking water availability in the area, and the Food Safety department will monitor the quality of food and beverages sold in nearby shops.
The Fort Kochi Sub-Collector and the Muvattupuzha Revenue Divisional Officer have been assigned to oversee the arrangements.

Cohabitation not mandatory for accident compensation, rules Karnataka high court
Bengaluru: Karnataka high court has ruled that cohabitation cannot be treated as a mandatory requirement for claiming compensation under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, stating that it is the insurer's responsibility to prove any allegation of separation. Justice Ravi V Hosmani issued the ruling while partially allowing the appeal filed by a man whose wife died in a road accident in 2021. The case pertains to Yallawwa, a 42-year-old highway maintenance worker who was fatally injured on July 7, 2021 after being struck by a lorry near the KSRTC bus stand in Nidagundi, Vijayapura district, on NH-50. Her husband Ningappa had filed a claim under Section 166 of the Motor Vehicles Act, seeking compensation for the loss of his wife. The company argued that the deceased had been living separately from Ningappa and therefore, he wasn't entitled to compensation under the category of "loss of dependency". The Vijayapura motor accident claims tribunal awarded only Rs 70,000, citing references in the accident complaint suggesting the couple had been living apart. Compensation for loss of dependency was denied. Ningappa challenged the tribunal's ruling. In response, the insurer referred to a statement by Yallawwa's brother that she had been living separately after Ningappa allegedly remarried, as she was unable to conceive. Justice Hosmani, however, noted inconsistencies in the claim. He pointed out that the brother had admitted to being illiterate and unaware of the contents of the complaint he had signed. Further, the court found no evidence proving a second marriage by Ningappa, nor any findings through cross-examination. Terming the tribunal's denial of dependency compensation unlawful, the judge ruled that separation can't be presumed without clear evidence. Citing the Karnataka State Legal Services Authority's notional income chart for 2021, the court fixed the deceased's monthly income at Rs 14,250 and calculated the total compensation at more than Rs 14.9 lakh. The amount will carry 6% annual interest from the day the original claim was filed.

Man sentenced to one year imprisonment for misbehaving with woman on bus
Kochi: A 43-year-old man was sentenced to one year of imprisonment in the case of misconduct towards a female passenger on a bus. A fine of Rs 10,000 was also imposed on the convict. The case pertains to the assault which happened on July 26, 2022. The sentence was awarded to Shoby C Joseph of Thodupuzha, Idukki, on Friday. He was found guilty under Section 354 of the IPC (Assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty). Judicial first-class magistrate court II in Ernakulam awarded the punishment. Assistant public prosecutor Honey Jacob represented the prosecution, while inspector Xavier Lalu registered the FIR. Sub-inspector B Sabu submitted the chargesheet to the court.

Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation employee suspended for forging signature of ex-MD and senior officials
Bengaluru: The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has suspended an employee for allegedly forging the signature of former managing director Anbu Kumar and other senior officials, who are heading mechanical and operation departments. The suspended employee has been identified as Richard J, a junior assistant in the accounts department at KSRTC's central office. He allegedly created forged documents promising transfer and reappointment of employees and in return, collected money from them. According to KSRTC, Richard deceived Nagarajappa, an assistant artisan from the Shivamogga division, by assuring him of a transfer to Davanagere division. He also allegedly took money from Nagaraj N A, a dismissed driver, promising reinstatement. In addition, Richard duped his friend Chandrhasa S Achari, a driver from the Kundapura depot, by offering a fake transfer to Shivamogga. Upon verification, officials informed him that such orders are never sent via WhatsApp, but only through email or post. A closer inspection confirmed the order was fake and the same thing was brought to the notice of higher-ups." The forged documents were allegedly backdated to July 4, by which time Anbu Kumar was already transferred from KSRTC to serve as the chief electoral officer of Karnataka. Richard has been suspended following instructions from the transport minister Ramalinga Reddy, and a detailed investigation is underway.
