Daylight Saving Time 2025: How 'springing forward' negatively impacts your health — and why you should prioritize sleep now

Daylight Saving Time (DST) is back, meaning it's time to "spring forward" once again and move our clocks ahead one hour. This Sunday, March 9 at 2 a.m. local time is when the time change will occur, bringing an extra hour of sunlight each day for the next eight months.
However, it's worth noting this centuries-old practice may come with concerning impacts. For one, this time change can cause us to lose roughly 40 minutes to an hour of sleep. While it may seem like a minor inconvenience, it turns out the loss of sleep due to DST can have serious impacts on our health and wellbeing.
DST causes a disruption in our circadian rhythm, also referred to as our internal body clock. Circadian rhythms help determine as well as regulate sleeping and eating patterns on a roughly 24-hour cycle. Essentially, this clock will tell you when you're sleepy or hungry as it rises and falls throughout the day.

The time change messes with our circadian rhythm, causing us to feel drowsy and moody; it can even lead some to experience an increased appetite. A disrupted circadian rhythm can impact our motor functions, response times overall alertness which increases our likelihood of injury.
According to a 2009 study, there was a 3.6 per cent increase in mining workplace injuries on the Monday following DST. A separate study over a 10-year time period revealed a six per cent increase in car accidents in the United States immediately after clocks are adjusted in the spring.
The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) also indicated that according to statistics averaged from 2005 to 2009, car accidents rose by 23 per cent on the Monday following DST.
Aside from being accident prone, DST can also cause an increase in heart attacks and stroke. Founder of Sleep Efficiency Andrew Holmes told CTV News there's a relationship between cardiovascular health and sleep. He shared an acronym of health issues, H.E.A.R.T.S., that sleep can impact.
H — Heart failure: People who suffer from heart failure have often been diagnosed with sleep apnea.
E — Elevated blood pressure: Sleep regulates blood pressure, while a person sleeping under seven hours can see their blood pressure rise.
A — Atrial fibrillation: These irregular heartbeats can often be from someone suffering insomnia or sleep apnea.
R — Resistant hypertension: A lack of sleep can make it difficult for medications to treat hypertension and blood pressure.
T — Type 2 diabetes: Sleep is often linked to diabetes, as sleep deprivation can cause a disruption in your glucose metabolism.
S — Stroke risk: Undiagnosed sleep problems can increase the risk of stroke, heart attack and congestive heart failure.
Some studies have also found a link between DST and heart attacks as well as strokes. A study published in 2014 showed there was a 25 per cent increase in the number of reported heart attacks on the Monday following DST compared to other Mondays during the year.
Dr. Amneedt Sandhu, a then-cardiology fellow at the University of Colorado, led the study and indicated this might be due to a combination of factors. Those might include the stress of starting a new work week and inherent changes to our sleep-wake cycle.

According to the research, there was a 25 per cent increase in the number of reported heart attacks on the Monday following DST compared to other Mondays during the year.
"With daylight saving time, all of this is compounded by one less hour of sleep," he said. "Whatever the reason, the findings may indicate a need to better staff hospitals the Monday after setting our clocks forward. ... If we can identify days when there may be surges in heart attacks, we can be ready to better care for our patients."
Another study also showed that disruptions in circadian rhythm increased risk of an ischemic stroke. That's when a blood clot, known as a thrombus, blocks blood flow to the brain. The research, conducted by a team from Finland, revealed the risk of stroke was eight per cent higher in the two days following the spring time change than during the rest of the year.
"Although from an individual point of view, this small increase in stroke risk we see in a population level is probably not a major issue, the study emphasizes the importance of sleep disturbances as a risk factor for stroke," lead researcher, Dr. Jori Ruuskanen of the University of Turku, told CBS News.
Daylight saving time also has some serious health impacts on pregnant women, specifically those who conceived through in-vitro fertilization (IVF). A 2017 study from a team at the Boston Medical Center and IVF New England published a study noting an increase in miscarriages for patients who received egg transfer in the 21 days following spring DST, compared to patients who received egg transfer outside of the DST window.
Until there are collective changes to how we tell time, it'll probably be a good idea to try and avoid health risks associated with DST. According to experts, there are a variety of ways you can ensure you remain healthy and safe after Sunday:
Get rest: Try going to bed earlier to get your usual amount of sleep.
Practice good sleep hygiene: Educate yourself on good sleep hygiene, including not consuming alcohol and avoiding using your phone before bed.
Defer dangers: If your work involves dangerous tasks, it might be a good idea to schedule those tasks for later in the week.
Plan ahead: Give yourself extra time to get to places, especially on the Monday.
Choose safety: Take extra safety precautions following the switch to DST to prevent possible injuries or problems.

As of right now the source of the outbreak is still being investigated, but officials are telling people to be careful, and to regularly maintain and clean their cooling equipment to prevent further outbreaks. Here's what you need to know about Legionnaires' disease and how it spreads. Legionnaires' disease is a serious respiratory illness that can result in a serious chest infection or pneumonia. It is caused by a type of bacteria that lives in water called Legionella. Most people who catch Legionnaires' disease breathe in the bacteria from water, and it is more common in warmer weather. The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) says that Legionnaires' disease symptoms usually develop two to 14 days after exposure to Legionella bacteria, and can last several months .The symptoms are similar to pneumonia. They include: cough, fever, headache, muscle aches and shortness of breath. Other symptoms, like confusion, diarrhea or nausea can also occur, according to the U.S. Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Most people exposed to the bacteria do not get sick, but there are those who are at a higher most at risk include the elderly, smokers, individuals with chronic lung or kidney disease, diabetes, or weakened immune systems. According to PHAC, people in certain occupations — such as those who do maintenance work on large air conditioning systems — may also be at an increased risk. The treatment for Legionnaires' disease is done through antibiotics, and most cases recover. The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) says that earlier treatment helps to reduce the chance of serious complications. Legionella bacteria are found in natural water sources such as lakes and rivers. Generally, the amount of this bacteria in these environments doesn't lead to disease. However, when the bacteria gets into building water systems and grows, it poses a risk to one's health. The bacteria may grow due to certain conditions. According to PHAC, these are 'stagnant water, warm water temperature (20 to 50 degrees Celsius), or the presence of biofilm, scale, and sediment.' As a result, the bacteria could be found in cooling towers, humidifiers, plumbing systems, or hot tubs. When the contaminated water is released into the air, through mist or droplets, the bacteria becomes airborne and people may inhale it, resulting in infection. The CDC says that Legionnaires' disease is not spread from person to person. In public areas and buildings, owners of cooling towers or centrally installed misters or humidifiers should follow manufacturers' instructions regarding maintenance to prevent the growth of the bacteria. CCOHS says that, 'cooling towers and evaporative condensers should be inspected and thoroughly cleaned at least once a year.' At home, PHAC says individuals can 'reduce the risks by proper maintenance of mist-producing devices, such as shower heads, hot tubs, whirlpool bathtubs and humidifiers.' It is important to disinfect these devices regularly, following the manufacturer's instructions. With warmer weather creating ideal conditions for Legionella to thrive, simple steps like maintaining water systems can go a long way in keeping communities safe. In a press release, the Middlesex-London Health Unit said they are working with Public Health Ontario 'to investigate and identify the source of the outbreak.' Environmental sampling is being done, but because Legionella can be found in different places, this might take time. In the meantime, they ask that the public clean and maintain their cooling equipment. Texas is poised to adopt permanent daylight saving time, dubbed 'Texas Time,' after the state Senate passed House Bill 1393 last week with a 27-4 vote. The measure will now be sent to Gov. Greg Abbott for his expected signature. However, the change hinges on federal approval, as current law prohibits states from staying on daylight saving time year-round. HB 1393, introduced by Rep. Will Metcalf (R-Conroe), aims to end the twice-yearly clock changes that many Texans find disruptive. The bill, which cleared the Texas House in April, would permanently keep the state on daylight saving time (DST), extending evening daylight hours. 'The bill would provide numerous benefits to Texans,' said Sen. Paul Bettencourt (R-Houston), who sponsored the measure in the Senate. 'It's very difficult to use that hour before an 8 a.m. start for school or work very effectively, but you can use the several hours later, up through dusk.' Under the federal Uniform Time Act of 1966, states can opt for permanent standard time, as Arizona and Hawaii do, but not permanent daylight saving time without Congressional action. 'Right now, the federal government does not allow the states to make this change, so this is effectively a trigger bill,' Bettencourt said. Texas joins 18 other states, including Florida and Oklahoma, that have passed similar measures awaiting federal permission. The Sunshine Protection Act, which would allow states to adopt permanent daylight saving time, has been introduced in Congress five times, most recently in 2025, but has not passed. Critics, like Sen. Nathan Johnson (D-Dallas), argue that permanent daylight saving time poses health and safety risks. 'Everybody hates the time change,' Johnson said. 'But this has been studied medically, and there is a ton of health risks.' He cited disruptions to circadian rhythms and potential increases in pre-dawn traffic accidents, referencing the U.S.'s failed 1974 experiment with year-round daylight saving time, which was repealed after public backlash. 'The question is: Do we go with daylight saving time and always be an hour ahead of where we established our clock centuries ago? Or do we go back to what we've done for centuries?' Johnson said. Sen. Judith Zaffirini (D-Laredo) proposed permanent standard time and, alongside Bettencourt, suggested a referendum to let Texans choose. Still, neither idea gained traction among the 13 time-related bills filed this session. A 2019 AP-NORC poll found that 40% of Americans favor permanent standard time, 31% prefer permanent daylight saving time, and 28% want to keep the current system. Public comments on HB 1393 at a hearing in the House largely favored ending the biannual clock change, but most commenters favored a return to permanent standard time rather than permanent daylight saving time. Frisco resident Shannon Stewart said, 'Daylight Saving Time is dangerous for children, and HORRIBLE for our health. It disrupts our bodies' circadian rhythm. Additionally, DST has been mandated by an overreaching government before (1972) and was so hated that it was repealed. We need PERMANENT Standard Time.' 'Dictating artificial daylight savings is not the job of government,' Stewart continued. 'Noon should be when the sun is at its highest point in the sky, not at a time appointed by government.' Dr. Audrey Nath, a neurologist in Houston, urged legislators to oppose HB 1393 and instead support HB 1733, HB 1736, or SB 692, which all propose permanent standard time. 'President Nixon had put Permanent DST into effect in 1974, and it was retracted within a year. We do not need to run this experiment again in Texas,' Nath said. 'There are more heart attacks with DST. With permanent Standard Time, there is improved visibility for driving during the morning commute, and better sleep and circadian rhythms. Permanent Standard Time would have a tangible positive effect on the health of Texans.' Globally, only about a third of countries observe daylight saving time, primarily in Europe and North America, according to the Pew Research Center. In the past decade, nations like Azerbaijan, Iran, and Mexico have abolished the practice, often citing health concerns. Egypt, which ended it in 2014, reinstated it in 2023 for energy savings. Then-president-elect Donald Trump and allies like Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy have previously called for ending clock changes. In December, Trump labeled the practice 'inconvenient' and 'very costly' on social media. If signed by Abbott and approved by Congress, HB 1393 would align Texas with a growing movement to stabilize timekeeping, though its implementation remains uncertain pending federal action.
