Massive new blow for Roosters as teammate joins Sam Walker in fresh setback

Yahoo18-06-2025

The Roosters' hopes of cementing their top-eight spot have copped a fresh setback, with forward Nat Butcher set to join injured halfback Sam Walker in an extended stint on the sidelines. Walker was set to play his first NRL game of the season in last week's controversial four-point defeat of Newcastle but suffered a fractured right thumb in training and was ruled out.
The halfback was initially named in Trent Robinson's starting side after returning from a nine-month layoff from an ACL rupture in NSW Cup the previous week. But the luckless No.7 will have to wait another month after undergoing a successful operation on the thumb on Thursday and commencing rehabilitation on the injury.
The depth of Robinson's squad will be further tested after Butcher suffered a recurrence of an MCL strain in training last week. Thankfully, the knee injury does not require surgery but it's likely to keep the versatile forward out of action for the next six weeks in a another blow for the Tri Colours.

The Roosters are currently sitting eighth on the NRL ladder but have a host of teams hot on their heels as the race for finals footy heats up in the second half of the season. Robinson's men host North Queensland in a crucial clash at Allianz Stadium on Sunday, where a win for the 10th-placed Cowboys will see them leapfrog the Tri Colours on the ladder.

Further complicating the situation for the Roosters is the fact they'll be without forwards Victor Radley and Egan Butcher for the Cowboys clash after both entered concussion protocols in the wake of the Knights game. Radley suffered his second game-ending head knock of the season after attempting to tackle Fletcher Hunt during the second half of the 12-8 win in Newcastle.
He will now miss at least next week's clash against North Queensland, before the Roosters have their third bye of the season the following week. Worryingly, it was Radley's seven game-ending head knock in the past four seasons and he's set to consult an independent specialist this week, amid concerns from fans about his playing future.
Egan Butcher will follow standard concussion rehabilitation protocols and the Roosters will be hoping to have him and Radley back for the round 18 showdown against Wests Tigers after next week's bye. Although a more cautious approach may needed to be taken with Radley due to his extension history of head knocks.
Robinson will also be crossing his fingers that the Roosters' quintet of Origin stars hold up OK after Game 2 of the series on Wednesday night, having named all five for Sunday's home clash with the Cowboys. Maroons stars Robert Toia and Lindsay Collins, plus Blues trio Connor Watson, Angus Crichton and Spencer Leniu are all set to play against North Queensland in round 16 - barring injuries from Origin - and the four-day turnaround will give them the best chance to recover in time for the crunch clash.
Toia's return sees rugby convert Mark Nawaqanitawase pushed out to the wing in place of Dom Young, whose return to Newcastle was confirmed after the Knights game. Sandon Smith gets the chance to continue in the halves alongside Hugo Savala in Walker's prolonged absence, while Siua Wong, Naufahu Whyte and Salesi Foketi keep their spot in the forward pack, with Makahesi Makatoa and Taylor Losalu dropping to the reserves as Robinson shuffles the deck.

Broncos special teams coach dubs rookie one of the most talented prospects he's had

Punter hype? Punter hype! After losing Riley Dixon to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers during NFL free agency, the Denver Broncos used a sixth-round draft pick to select Australian punter Jeremy Crawshaw in April. Advertisement The international punter grew up playing rugby league and Australian rules football before training to kick in American football. After attending Nathan Chapman's ProKick Australia academy, Crawshaw played college football at Florida. The 24-year-old punter impressed Broncos special teams coordinator Darren Rizzi this spring. 'Probably Jeremy the person," Rizzi said on June 11 when asked what impressed him about Crawshaw. "His maturity. It's not easy to come from another country and play a sport he had never played before. Think about that. Here's a guy that came from Australia, went to an SEC school, a top-level college program, [and] had a ton of success. His maturity level, he's kind of beyond his years if you will. That was when we were kind of evaluating all the punters in this draft, his name came up. I really feel like his intangibles, his off-the-field stuff was A-plus. "Now, his talent level is tremendous as well. I really believe that at that position, at a specialist position, your demeanor might be just as important as your ability, because it's a one-play-and-done. You have to have the mentality of kind of a batter in baseball if you will, or a golfer. You have to go on to the next swing. I really like his level-headedness. I really like his maturity. I really like his approach. Getting to know him in the process was a big part of us drafting him, so that was pretty cool.' That's extremely high praise from Rizzi, a high-profile coordinator who has coached in the NFL since 2009 and has experience as an associate head coach and interim head coach. Special teams players are often overlooked by fans, but Crawshaw appears to have been a huge addition for the Broncos this offseason. Advertisement Related: These 25 celebrities are Broncos fans. Matildas ship late goal in draw with Slovenia

A 91st-minute strike from Mirjam Kastelec has earned Slovenia a 1-1 draw with the Matildas in Perth, denying Joe Montemurro two wins from two games as Australian coach and spoiling an improved performance from the hosts. After a scoreless opening half at HBF Park on Sunday evening, the Australians secured a deserved breakthrough five minutes after the break when Remy Seimsen set Ellie Carpenter up to float a cutback to Michelle Heyman, who placed a side-footed volley into the net. But a late flurry from the Slovenians was rewarded a minute into added time when an effort from Naja Poje Mihelic bounced off the post and back into the path of fellow substitute Kastelec, who slid in front of a desperately retreating Australian defence to fire home. It dampened a performance from the Australians that showed signs of improvement as they continue to adapt to the new possession-based principles of Montemurro – even if the margin was well off the 3-0 victory they secured over the same opposition on Thursday evening. After a midweek win characterised by struggles with the Slovenian press and sloppy turnovers, the hosts were cleaner with the ball in their defensive third in the re-match, which resulted in fewer opportunities off giveaways for the Europeans. This was accompanied by improvements in the side's movement and combination play going forward, particularly from Carpenter and Amy Sayer on the right. The promising build-ups, however, were frequently let down by the final ball or stymied by desperate last-gasp defending. That was until the 50th minute, when Seimsen's inch-perfect ball for Carpenter set the wingback up to put it on a plate for Heyman. Heyman and Carpenter combine once again to give the CommBank Matildas a deserved opener 🤝🎥: @ParamountPlusAU #Matildas #AUSvSVN #WAtheDreamState — CommBank Matildas (@TheMatildas) June 29, 2025 Charli Grant came close to killing the game off in the 70th minute but had her shot cleared off the line, before the visitors raised their intensity. Having hardly been sighted to that point, Mackenzie Arnold was called into action in the 90th minute to make a quick reaction to deny Kastelec, but the Australian keeper could do little about the 22-year-old's effort a minute later. Seeking to bounce back, Montemurro will now shuffle his deck for fixtures against Panama on July 5 and July 8, with Carpenter, Cooney-Cross and Kennedy amongst eight players leaving camp, with eight new players set to jet into West Australia.

Kinghorn itching to join Lions squad after 'sweet' Top 14 triumph

Blair Kinghorn (C) celebrates the Top 14 title with Jack Willis (R) and Thibaud Flament (L) (MARTIN BUREAU) Toulouse's Scottish winger Blair Kinghorn said it had been "weird" seeing the British and Irish Lions tour start without him as he helped his club to a record-extending 24th French Top 14 title on Saturday. The 28-year-old played the full 100 minutes, including the draining extra-time, as the giants of French rugby held off Bordeaux-Begles 39-33 in dramatic fashion to claim a third straight French crown. Advertisement Kinghorn, who can also play at full-back and fly-half, flies to Australia with the Lions two games into a 10-match schedule for his first experience of the historic touring team. He is only set to be available for the Lions when they face the Waratahs in Sydney next Saturday after a gruelling club campaign. "I've been so focused on Toulouse stuff that I've not really thought about it too much," Kinghorn told reporters sipping a bottle of beer and wearing just a pair of club coloured red and black swimming briefs. "It feels a bit weird, to be honest. "It's only like the last couple of days when I've had to pack and everything, it's like, all right, I'm heading out there now," the 63-time capped star added. Advertisement Success at a buoyant Stade de France capped off a frustrating season for serial-winners Toulouse. Despite topping the Top 14 table after the regular season and scoring a record number of points they lost their Champions Cup crown when they were knocked out in the semi-finals by eventual winners Bordeaux-Begles. "That one feels sweet after probably not the best season we've had, even though the stats and all that back it up that we've had a great season," he said. "It doesn't matter, the stats, if you don't win something, it's not a successful season. "I'm over the moon, it's amazing," he added. Advertisement - 'Bounce back' - Kinghorn is the only member of the Lions squad playing his club rugby in France. Team-mate and English back-rower Jack Willis missed out on selection despite an impressive season for Toulouse. Since leaving Wasps for France in 2022 Willis has been unable to add to his 15 England caps as he plays his rugby abroad. "I think he's been playing unbelievable rugby," Kinghorn said. "But he was a realist. "He knows that there's a lot of competition in that back row and he's not playing international rugby. "But I'm sure if there's an injury he can potentially get called out because he's in great form at the moment," he added. Advertisement The Lions have started their tour with mixed results. They lost to Argentina in Dublin last week before hammering the Western Force, their first game on Australian soil, 54-7 hours before Kinghorn lifted the 133-year-old Bouclier Shield (Bouclier de Brennus). "It's always tough coming together," Kinghorn said. "Everyone expects you to be like a great team from the get-go, but you don't have those connections. "So it's good to see that they bounced back and got a great win," the former Edinburgh full-back added. Kinghorn arrives in Australia on Monday after a flight from Paris, a luxury three of his compatriots would only dream of. Advertisement His fellow former Edinburgh Academicals players in the three Maclean brothers, Lachlan, Ewan and Jamie, are rowing 9,000 miles (14,480km) across the Pacific Ocean to Australia to raise money for clean water projects. "It's nuts what they're doing," Kinghorn said. "They're sleeping 90 minutes getting up and rowing. "It's carnage. "They're hopefully going to try and make it for one of the games. "But obviously with mother nature you never really know what's going to happen," he added. iwd/pi
