Who was Fauja Singh, the 'Turbaned Tornado' who ran a marathon at 100?

Veteran marathon runner Fauja Singh, who became the world's oldest person to complete a full marathon at the age of 100, passed away on Monday after being struck by a vehicle in Jalandhar, Punjab. He was 114.

A life of endurance and inspiration
Born on April 1, 1911, into a farming family, Fauja Singh was the youngest of four siblings. According to his biography, he was unable to walk until the age of five, but later built resilience working on farms and credited his strength to family support and faith.
Fauja Singh moved to London in 1993 after the death of his wife Gian Kaur, to live with one of his sons. It was during this time that he took up long walks and running in public parks—habits that would spark an extraordinary late-in-life athletic career.
Record-breaking marathon journey
In 2000, at the age of 89, Singh ran his first marathon—the London Marathon—after meeting coach Harmandar Singh. Between 2000 and 2011, he completed nine full marathons, including six London Marathons, two Toronto Marathons, and the New York Marathon.
He became the first person aged 100 to finish a full marathon, completing the Toronto Waterfront Marathon in 2011 in 8 hours and 11 minutes.
Singh also participated in 10-km races globally, including in Hong Kong and Lahore. His participation in the Lahore event drew praise from then-Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf.
Honours and legacy
Fauja Singh was honoured with the Ellis Island Medal of Honour by the National Ethnic Coalition in the US in 2013. In 2015, he received a British Empire Medal for his contributions to sports and charity.
He was also chosen as a torchbearer for the 2012 London Olympics, a testament to his global recognition and inspirational journey.
Singh retired from competitive running in 2013 but continued to be an icon of perseverance, often seen advocating fitness and mental strength for the elderly.

Delhi Half Marathon Organisers Remember Fauja Singh Ahead Of October 12 Event

The 20th edition of the Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon will be held on October 12 and will start from the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi, the organisers of the event said on Wednesday. The registration for the race categories, including half marathon, Open 10K, Great Delhi Run, Senior Citizens Run and Champions with Disability, will commence on July 17 and will remain open till September 19. The launch event was attended by Delhi's sports minister Ashish Sood and tourism minister Kapil Mishra among others. Vivek Singh, joint Managing Director of Procam International - the organisers of the Delhi Marathon, said Fauja Singh, the iconic marathoner who died at the age of 114 in a road accident on Monday, was a huge inspiration to all. "Fauja Singh ji had come for the Mumbai Marathon in 2016. I met him then. His specialty was that he was extremely disciplined. Whoever met him could not remain without being impressed and inspired by him," Singh said. "His dedication to the marathon was amazing. He maintained it throughout his life. The great double Olympic winner Eliud Kipchoge said, 'Those who are disciplined are truly free.' Fauja ji was completely true to this statement. It is very sad that he died like this." Commenting on the 20th edition of the event, Anil Singh, MD of Procam International, the promoters of the race said: "This 20th year of the Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon is deeply emotional for us more than a milestone; it's a celebration of a legacy built step by step, year after year. "What started as a vision to create a world-class sporting event in India has grown into a symbol of resilience, community, and hope. We've witnessed runners turn into role models, streets transform into stories of courage, and a city come alive with purpose." Also part of the event was former India hockey team skipper and current junior men's hockey team coach PR Sreejesh and Paralympic Committee of India chief Devendra Jhajharia.

Fauja Singh's Last Wish Was To Spend Rest Of His Life In Britain

New Delhi/Jalandhar: World's oldest marathon runner Fauja Singh wanted to spend the rest of his life in Britain. His last wish could not be fulfilled. Fauja Singh, who had come to Punjab in 2015 for a sports event, had spoken to PTI Bhasha in an exclusive conversation at his house in Beas. "Here (Punjab), there are bad elements everywhere. Police cannot do anything. No one knows when they will stab, rob and hit someone and run away. This is not the case in London. That is why I want to spend my last time there," Singh had then said. The 114-year-old was proven right when he went for a walk on the Jalandhar-Pathankot highway in his village Monday afternoon and died in a horrific road accident. A decade ago, Fauja asserted his youthfulness. "I can never accept that I am old. I can walk faster and farther than you. As far as the last moments are concerned, the most suitable place is Britain." Fauja Singh expressed regret for never being able to win any medals for India. Dressed in his house wearing a Pathani kurta and pyjama, Fauja Singh had said during the interview, "I will always regret that whenever I ran, and whatever medals I won, not even one of them was for India. People kept calling me a British runner. I did not like this. But what can I do? I have become a British citizen." Showing his medals with a sigh, Fauja said, "I wish I could win a medal for my country. I have won all these, but it is of no use to me because not a single medal is for India." The passion for running flowed like blood in his veins. "Until I run, I don't feel healthy." In 2015, Fauja, who was 104 years old at the time, revealed the secret of his health. "I am healthy and completely fit, the main reason for this is - pinni and Dil-i Khushi (contentment). I am always happy and eat Punjabi 'pinni' every day." "After eating pinni, I drink a glass of lukewarm water. I drink a glass of milk before sleep at night, and I make sure to eat curd in every season. Wherever I live, here (India) or there (Britain), I eat these things and am always happy. This is the biggest secret of my health," he said. Fauja Singh, who took up running in his early eighties, said, "I cannot live even a day without Pinni. I need it every day. But now Punjab has joined the race of modernity, and pinni, for which it is most famous, is not available here." The veteran marathoner added, "A better pinni is found in England. It is a cold country. People of Punjab living there also like pinni. It is easily digested." He also gave fitness advice to the correspondent, saying, "Kaaka! If you also want to stay fit, then eat pinni every day." 'Pinni' is a very popular Punjabi sweet which is made from ghee, wheat flour, gum and dry fruits. Singh, who retired from running in 2012 after running a half marathon in Hong Kong, said, "After turning 100, they don't allow you to run the marathon. Many times, while running, there is a fear of falling." Explaining the reason behind being attracted to running in his eighties, Fauja Singh said, "About 22 years ago, my elder son died in a road accident. I was so sad, almost lifeless. Meanwhile, my daughter took me to London with her. One of my sons also lives there." Fauja Singh, who was going to turn 104 in April, said, "Amrik Singh Dhillon, a resident of Bathinda living in London, inspired me to run for charity for the first time. After this, I ran once, and never stopped." He added, "After my son's death, I went into depression. I used to sit in the park there. Around that time, I met Amrik, and he asked me to run."

Satwik-Chirag Hope To Stay Fit: 'Once He's Better, I'll Have Some Niggles...'

Last Updated: Satwiksairaj Rankireddy is focused on staying fit ahead of the World Championships. Despite recurring injuries, Satwik and Chirag Shetty have reached three semifinals this season. Top Indian shuttler Satwiksairaj Rankireddy is relieved to see positive results on the court despite recurring injury setbacks and stated that the focus ahead of next month's World Championships is on staying fit, without any long-term goals in mind. Satwik and Chirag Shetty have reached three semifinals this season, including a quarterfinal finish at the Indonesia Open last month. After semifinal runs at the Malaysia Open and India Open in January, the Indian duo was sidelined for several weeks due to Satwik's health concerns and Chirag's persistent back injury. They returned to the circuit with a semifinal appearance at the Singapore Open and a quarterfinal showing in Indonesia. On Wednesday, the former world No. 1 pair began their Japan Open Super 750 campaign with a comfortable 21-18, 21-10 win over Korea's Kang Min Hyuk and Kim Won Ho. What Did Satwik Say? 'For us, it's to get fit 100%. It's always up and down. Once he's better, I'll have some niggles. Once I'm better, he's having some niggles. So we haven't played without injury from past one year. So we have been struggling with niggles," said Satwik. 'Still, we are managing to play some good quality games. So that is a positive side. But right now, our aim is to get injury-free and be healthy all the time." The Japan Open will be followed by the China Open Super 1000 before the top players head to Paris for the World Championships, scheduled from August 25 to 31. 'Just not thinking so much ahead. No goals as of now. Obviously, we want to do well, but at the same time, we want to be healthy," Satwik added. 'And once we are healthy, I know we can do that. So the only thing is injuries are holding us, restricting our game. But right now, we are both feeling good because we had a break after Singapore. Both are really fit enough, so we'll see how it goes." What Did Chirag Say? Chirag echoed Satwik's sentiments and said the break after the Indonesia Open was essential for recovery. 'No, it was actually needed. So we had sent entry for US, Canada as well. But after Singapore and Indonesia, we needed that break because I especially was not fit enough," the Mumbai shuttler said. 'I think leading up to the Singapore-Indonesia Open. But right now, I had some good couple of weeks. So body feels much better than it was. We just took a break the first week after we got back, freshened up. And then got back to practice. 'I was out for post-All England. I had to withdraw. And then for two months, I was out. Not really fit going into Singapore-Indonesia, but now it's a lot better." (With inputs from PTI) First Published: July 16, 2025, 20:42 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
