Canine surfers to ride waves in world championship
On Saturday, Charlie is set to join about 15 to 20 other canine wave riders to vie for top dog in the World Dog Surfing Championships outside San Francisco. The annual contest draws thousands of spectators to Pacifica State Beach.
Participating pooches compete against similarly sized peers for a chance to appear in the finals. Additional heats feature multiple dogs surfing tandem on one board and dogs riding tandem with humans.
Judges scrutinise how long dogs remain on boards, how long they can hold their balance and whether they perform any tricks, like turning around while riding waves.
Charlie, aged 10, is due to enter the extra-large single surfer heat. He will also ride tandem with two other dogs on what their owners call 'The Dream Team'.

Ledecky wins 800m freestyle, US set relay world record, more gold for China's divers
American Katie Ledecky secured a seventh 800m freestyle world title in a thrilling race, the US set a world record in storming to 4x100m freestyle gold in the mixed relay, and China continued their diving dominance on Saturday. Ledecky had to give her all to secure a 23rd career world title as she was pushed to the limit by Australian Lani Pallister and Canadian star Summer McIntosh from start to finish. Ledecky edged Pallister by a mere 0.32 of a second as she clocked a championship record of eight minutes 5.62 seconds, missing her world record by just 1.5 seconds. McIntosh, who briefly led with 100m to go, earned bronze in her first major 800m duel with Ledecky, 1.67 seconds back. McIntosh had won the 400m freestyle, 200m medley and 200m butterfly gold in Singapore. 'It was incredibly fast; they pushed me all the way,' nine-time Olympic champion Ledecky said.
