Thomas Partey makes final decision on Arsenal exit with one day left on contract

Daily Mirror2 days ago

Arsenal have been in talks with Thomas Partey over a new contract since April, but the 32-year-old Ghana international is now set to leave the club next week as a free agent
Thomas Partey is poised to leave Arsenal after the club failed to come to an agreement over a new contract for the midfielder. The Gunners had been keen to keep Partey, but he will now depart when his contract expires on Tuesday.
Mikel Arteta spoke publicly about his desire to keep the 32-year-old, who played a key role in the 2024/25 campaign. But negotiations have dragged on and on and, with his current deal expiring on June 30, they have finally decided to call it quits.

Arsenal first opened talks over an extension in April, but have already plugged the gap he is about to leave. Martin Zubimendi is joining in a £51million transfer from Real Sociedad next month and the Gunners have also bid £9.3m for Brentford captain Christian Norgaard after Jorginho also departed on a free transfer for Flamengo.

Partey has been free to speak to foreign clubs since January and has been linked with a move to Fenerbahce, who are managed by Jose Mourinho, and has been offered a big-money contract in the Saudi Pro League. He has been with Arsenal since 2020, when he arrived from Atletico Madrid for £45m, and has made 167 appearances across all competitions.
Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta, who used to work at Partey's old club Atleti, was the man tasked with agreeing new terms for Partey. But the club have now decided to walk away from the negotiating table.
Asked in April whether there had been progress over a new deal for Partey, Arteta said: "Yes, there is progress with all the players. I'll leave that to Andrea and the club to decide and to talk about."
Pushed on whether the intention is to keep Partey, he added: "The intention is very clear. I'll leave that to Andrea and the club to take a step forward."
Arsenal's move for Zubimendi has been delayed because Real Sociedad want to bank the transfer fee in the new football financial year, which begins on July 1. The Gunners spent a long time negotiating with the Spanish side in order to secure a favourable deal in terms of spreading out the cost.

Meanwhile, Arsenal are still looking to sign a centre-forward in the summer transfer window, with RB Leipzig star Benjamin Sesko the preference ahead of Sporting Lisbon's Viktor Gyokeres. Arteta also wants to bolster his options in the wide positions, with Crystal Palace's Eberechi Eze on the radar, along with Real Madrid 's Rodrygo.
They are closing in on a deal for Valencia defender Cristhian Mosquera, although their opening offer was dejected by the Spanish side. But a £5m deal for Chelsea keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga will go through soon.

Arsenal on alert as lower clause for Viktor Gyokeres is activated

Arsenal transfer target Viktor Gyokeres has a €60 million (£51.4m) clause in his contract with Sporting CP which has become active from July 1. Both Arsenal and Manchester United have held extensive talks to sign Gyokeres this summer but have not reached an agreement over a transfer fee with Sporting. Last month, Arsenal's sporting director, Andrea Berta, met with his counterpart at Sporting, Bernardo Palmeiro, in Menorca to discuss a deal for the striker, who finished last season with 54 goals in 52 appearances and helped the Portuguese club win the league and cup double. However, Arsenal's initial bid worth an €55m (£46.8m) plus €10m (£8.5m) in add-ons was rejected. Gyokeres has a €100 million (£85.1m) release clause in his contract but Sporting have been willing to sell the Sweden international for lower than that amount. However, Sporting's president, Frederico Varandas was angered by claims that the club have agreed to sell Gyokeres for €60m (£51m) plus €10m (£8.5m) in add-ons and warned the striker's representative, Hasan Cetinkaya, that he is 'making the situation worse'. According to A Bola, during his negotiations to bring Gyokeres to Sporting in a £20m deal from Coventry City two years ago, Cetinkaya secured an exclusive sales mandate which means that Sporting will be required to pay the agent 10 per cent of the value of any rejected offer above €60m (£51m). Sporting have warned Cetinkaya that if the clause in Gyokeres' contract is activated, they will demand that the striker's €100m (£85.1m) release clause is met. The Portuguese club are understood to be willing to sell Gyokeres if their €80m (£68.6m) asking price is met. Speaking on Sunday, Varandas maintained that Gyokeres is set to leave Sporting this summer but insists the 27-year-old will not be sold below market value. More Trending 'If you ask me today, there is a strong possibility that Viktor will leave,' Varandas said. 'In the last few weeks, we have been keeping an eye on the market, I saw a player like [Martin] Zubimendi, who is six months younger than Viktor, go to Arsenal for €65 million (£55m). 'I saw two players being sold in the Premier League – Matheus Cunha and [Bryan] Mbeumo – forwards who do not have the quality of Viktor, in my opinion. [They] were sold for around €75 million (£64m). We are talking about players who are 26 years old. 'So, given the demands we make in relation to Viktor's value, I believe he could leave, unless he has the worst agent in the world. Which I find hard to believe, because he is one of the best footballers in the world.' For more stories like this, check our sport page.
