JPC Chairperson on One Nation One Election holds meeting in Chandigarh
The meeting is currently underway with regional and national political parties of Haryana and Chandigarh, including the BJP, INC, JJP, BSP, INLD, and former Chief Ministers, who are discussing the matter of the One Nation One Election.
The 129th Constitutional Amendment Bill for simultaneous national and assembly polls was tabled in the Lok Sabha in December last year. It was later referred to the Joint Parliamentary Committee.
The Modi government had formed a High-level Committee on simultaneous Elections, under the chairmanship of former President Ram Nath Kovind, who submitted an over 18,000-page report to President Droupadi Murmu in March last year.
Earlier, Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema strongly opposed the Centre's One Nation, One Election (ONOE) proposal, terming it a direct assault on the federal structure of the country and against the spirit of the Constitution framed by Dr BR Ambedkar.
Speaking to ANI after a meeting with the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) in Chandigarh, Cheema reiterated the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-led Punjab government's firm stance against the initiative, arguing that it undermines state autonomy.
'The JPC and its Chairman visited Punjab today to seek the views of the state government and political parties on One Nation, One Election. We have clearly presented our viewpoint before the Committee--this agenda is harmful to the country. It aims to dismantle the federal structure of the nation and goes against the principles of our Constitution. This move threatens the autonomy of states, and we strongly oppose it. We will not allow it to be passed,' Cheema said.
In contrast, State Convener for ONOE, SS Channy, supported the initiative, claiming that 'people want One Nation, One Election to be implemented.'
'I welcome the JPC for coming to Punjab to listen to the political parties. We went around the state, and people want One Nation, One Election to be implemented. This will save time and money,' Channy said, highlighting the potential benefits of reduced election expenditure and administrative disruptions. (ANI)

'Any such act which negates the conducive atmosphere of the workplace has to be forbidden or prohibited. Sexual harassment demeans women, acts as a barrier to her creativity, slows down the efficacy causing immense mental and physical trauma, which is completely antithetical to the enabling principle of equality, liberty and justice– which forms the core values of the Constitution,' he said. He added, 'This menace, has to be taken head on and it is from this perspective that lies the significance and importance of this act and also assumes importance of the fact that today large number of women are joining and becoming partners in nation building exercise and are contributing meaningfully in all walks of life, which were exclusively reserved for men. In his speech the judge also laid emphasis on some of the aspects that act as hurdle in ensuring a safe workplace for women including the cultural resistance in acknowledge certain acts of sexual harassment, mindset that women's role is confined to domestic sphere. 'One of the greatest challenge is the deep rooted cultural resistance in acknowledging certain acts of sexual harassment. In fact many organisations consider these complaints of sexual harassment as a threat of their reputation, rather than providing opportunities of growth. There is a need to sensitise the people that there are certain acts which are prohibited, which cannot be tolerated,' he said. Justice Singh said that it is important for men to understand what makes a female counterpart uncomfortable and to extend help or cooperation in case they face inappropriate behaviour. 'It is also equally important for men to extend help or cooperation whenever such a woman faces any such kind of inappropriate behaviour from the men. Not only cooperation but empathetic attitude. Certainly not sympathy. Because what women require is not an act of charity, but it is a solemn obligation on all of us to ensure the dignity of women,' he said.

Sangh backs Hosable amid row over calls to review Preamble
The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) on Thursday doubled down on its general secretary Dattatreya Hosabale's statement about the need to review the inclusion of words 'secular' and 'socialist' in the Preamble to the Constitution of India, saying it was critical to take cognisance of the context in which these words were inserted during Emergency. Dattatreya Hosabale 'What he (Hosabale) said is that it is important to understand the context of how the words were inserted when Emergency was imposed in the country and atrocities and excesses were carried out. He spoke about the things that should be discussed and the need to debate these issues,' RSS chief spokesperson Sunil Ambekar said. Addressing an event in Delhi on June 26, Hosabale had called for reviewing the insertion of the words 'secular and socialist' in the Preamble. 'During the Emergency, two words, secular and socialist, were added to the Constitution, which were not part of the original Preamble. Later, these words were not removed. Should they remain or not… a debate must happen on this. These two words were not in Dr Ambedkar's Constitution. During the Emergency, the country had no functioning Parliament, no rights, no judiciary and yet these two words were added,' he had said. The changes were among those made in the contentious 42nd Amendment, passed in 1976. The RSS general secretary's remarks triggered a political slugfest; with the Opposition Congress accusing the RSS — the ideological mentor of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) — of wanting to 'destroy' the Constitution. 'The mask of RSS has come off again. The Constitution irks them because it speaks of equality, secularism and justice,' Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi said on X. 'The RSS, BJP do not want the Constitution, they want 'Manusmriti'. They aim to strip the marginalised and poor of their rights and enslave them again. Snatching a powerful weapon like the Constitution from them is their real agenda.' Ambekar was addressing a press conference in Delhi on the eve of the beginning of the three-day annual meeting of the All India Prant Pracharak, which will be attended by the top brass of RSS, including its chief Mohan Bhagwat. To a question on the Opposition's allegation that RSS does not give representation to the socially marginalised and backward communities within the organisation, Ambekar said the Sangh is a social organisation that works with the intent to promote social harmony and unity. 'The Sangh does not work like a political party. We work to unite people on the ground and take all sections along…that is the reason why the Sangh attracts support nationwide,' he said. The RSS functionary also lent support to the Union government's decision to conduct caste enumeration along with the decennial Census. He said while the thrust of the organisation's work is social harmony, whatever work needs to be done for the welfare of the people should be carried out. 'The government can take whatever information is needed for that,' he added. Giving details of the three-day meeting, which will be attended by 233 RSS functionaries taking stock of the work undertaken by various offshoots of the organisation, Ambekar said the centenary year of the Sangh is the main agenda of the meeting. 'All the programmes (to mark the centenary year) that had been announced, their working will be discussed. Hindu sammelans (conferences) to discuss important issues will be held across the country, beginning Vijayadashami on October 2,' he said. The RSS will complete 100 years of its foundation on Vijayadashmi this year, which falls on October 2. As part of the centenary outreach, volunteers will organise door-to-door interactions called 'Griha Sampark', giving details about the ideology and work of the Sangh and share literature about its functioning, the functionary said. 'Meetings of eminent persons at district levels will be held after the Vijayadashami programme. Special sessions with Bhagwat ji will be held in four cities — Delhi, Bengaluru, Mumbai and Kolkata,' Ambekar added. The three-day meeting is also expected to take stock of issues related to national security, as well as those pertaining to illegal immigration and atrocities against Hindus in Bangladesh.

Preparations for Kumbh mela 2027 underway in Haridwar: Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Dhami
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said that preparations are underway for the Kumbh Mela scheduled to be held in Haridwar in 2027, asserting that tourism in the state is witnessing rapid growth. CM Pushkar Dhami cited rapid progress on the Char Dham all-weather road and renovation of Badrinath and Kedarnath dhams.(X/ @pushkardhami) CM Dhami also highlighted that the Char Dham Yatra, which is currently underway, is progressing smoothly. "Under the leadership of the Prime Minister, our Char Dham Yatra is going on very well, and our tourism is developing. We have started the winter yatra, and other religious sites have been developed... The Kumbh Mela is scheduled to be held in Haridwar in 2027, and preparations for it are underway," CM Dhami told ANI. Highlighting the recognition received for development efforts, the Chief Minister said Uttarakhand has secured the first position in NITI Aayog's Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) index among small states. "By integrating ecology, economy, and technology, we are progressing with balanced development," he said. Further, CM Dhami mentioned the positive feedback received from delegates during the G20 Summit meeting hosted in Ramnagar here. "The G20 Summit meeting was held here, and the delegates from around the world left with a positive experience." CM Dhami listed several key infrastructure developments, including rapid progress on the Char Dham all-weather road and renovation of Badrinath and Kedarnath dhams. "Pantnagar airport is also being expanded and is on the way to becoming an international airport," he said. He also highlighted that state government provided significant number of jobs to the youth. "...In these years, we have paid special attention to employment. So far, about 24000 appointments have been made, and we have brought a strict law against cheating. UCC was our election resolution. We implemented UCC in the state. Under the leadership of the respected Prime Minister, we presented our resolution in front of the people of Uttarakhand. Our resolution was fulfilled, and we completed the work," CM Dhami said.
