
Ahmedabad plane crash: Manipur govt assures safe handover of crew remains to Kin

The Manipur government has conveyed to both Tata Group and Air India that it is fully prepared to receive the mortal remains of the two crew members, who died in the plane crash in Ahmedabad on June 12, in Imphal.Chief secretary PK Singh has said that necessary arrangements have been made to ensure that their remains are treated with highest dignity and respect, and subsequently transported safely to their respective homes.The bodies of two Air India crew members - 26-year-old Lamnunthem Singson and 20-year-old Kongbrailatpam Nganthoi Sharma from Manipur - would be brought back to Imphal after their DNA identification and completion of other formalities, Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), a leading civil society organisation, had said. "The DNA-based identification is expected to take approximately 72 hours. Once the process is complete, the remains will be brought back to their home state of Manipur," said COCOMI's information wing convenor Laikhuram Jayenta.Manipur witnessed ethnic clashes on May 3, 2023 and since then both the Meitei and Kuki communities stay in their respective areas. There is no movement through roads between the two communities in their respective areas. Kuki people travel to Mizoram to move out of Manipur.Sharma belonged to the non-tribal Meitei community and hailed from Manipur's Thoubal district while Singson was a resident of the tribal inhabited Kangpokpi district, and was from the tribal Thadou community.The chief secretary said that the final decision regarding the mode of reception, ceremonies, and other arrangements has been left to the bereaved families. The state is committed to providing all necessary support as per their wishes, Singh said.

Two militants arrested, explosives recovered in Manipur
Security forces arrested two militants, including a woman, belonging to a proscribed outfit in Manipur's Thoubal and Imphal West districts, police said on Sunday (July 6, 2025). During search operations, arms and explosives were recovered from various parts of Chandel district, a senior officer said. A woman cadre of the banned Prepak (PRO) was apprehended from the Salungpham area in Thoubal on Saturday (July 5, 2025), while another member of the outfit was held from the Nagamapal area in Imphal West district, he said. Intelligence-based search operations and cordons are being widely carried out to apprehend those involved in extortion and criminal activities in the State, the officer said. Security forces recovered arms and ammunition from different locations in Chandel district on Friday (July 4, 2025), he said. The seized items include 12 rifles, four IEDs and four grenades, the officer said. Security forces have been conducting search operations in Manipur since ethnic violence broke out two years ago. More than 260 people have been killed and thousands rendered homeless in ethnic violence between Meiteis and Kuki-Zo groups since May 2023. The Centre had on February 13 imposed the President's rule in Manipur after Chief Minister N. Biren Singh resigned. The State Assembly, which has a tenure till 2027, has been put under suspended animation.

300 more flee to Mizoram as Chin armed groups clash in Myanmar's Chin State
Owing to renewed clashes in Myanmar, Mizoram has witnessed fresh influx of refugees around 300 refugees have fled to to Zokhawthar village bordering Myanmar in Champhai district. Villagers from Chin state fled to Mizoram as the area saw fresh confrontation between two Chin armed groups . A senior officer in the state government who do no want to be named told ET, ' Several hour-long firing took place between Chinland Defence Force - Hualngoram (CDF-Hualngoram) and the Chin National Defence Force (CNDF) cadres at Rihkhawdar village and Khawmawi". He added, 'There are report of a refugee getting drowned in the Myanmar border river Tiau The Assam Rifles sealed the Indo-Myanmar gate at Zokhawthar'. According to a state Home Department official, a total of 33,004 Myanmar nationals, including 12,572 children, are currently sheltered in different camps, government buildings and rented houses in all 11 districts of Mizoram. They took shelter in Mizoram in phases after the military takeover in the conflict-ridden country in February 2021. Over 2,000 tribals from the Chittagong Hill Tracts of southeast Bangladesh also took shelter in Mizoram in November 2022 after they fled from their villages in CHT following ethnic troubles in the neighbouring country. Around 7,800 refugees belonging to the Kuki-Zo community from Manipur have also taken shelter in several districts of Mizoram after the ethnic violence broke out in the neighbouring state in May last year. The refugees from Myanmar, Bangladesh and Manipur belong to the Kuki-Zo-Chin-Hmar-Bawm tribal community who also share ethnic, traditional, cultural and linguistic ties with the Mizos of Mizoram. The union home ministry in a communique to the chief secretaries of Mizoram, Nagaland, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh, and the director general of Assam Rifles on March 10 in 2021 stated that there was a probability of large-scale illegal influx into the Indian territory due to the current internal situation in Myanmar. It had earlier issued an advisory to these states and the security forces to stay alert and take appropriate action to prevent a possible influx into Indian territory. The union ministry had also said that state governments had no power to grant refugee status to any foreigners.
