ESPN's Mel Kiper Jr. offers high praise to Oklahoma Sooners GM Jim Nagy
The Sooners hired Nagy as their first-ever general manager in February to help construct Oklahoma's roster. He had plenty of experience building rosters already, having served as the Executive Director of the Senior Bowl since 2018. Before that, Nagy spent 18 seasons in various scouting capacities with four different NFL teams.
ESPN analyst Mel Kiper Jr., long known as the dean of college-to-pro talent evaluation, knows Nagy well. The two have held a relationship for decades. And on Tuesday, during the first episode of "The Dari Nowkhah Show," on KREF in Norman, Kiper offered his thoughts on Nagy.
"I think it's great for Oklahoma, great for Jim," Kiper said. "Like I said, I don't think there's a better evaluator of talent out there."
Nagy's decision to join a college program over returning to the NFL surprised Kiper. Considering Nagy's experience in the professional ranks, the analyst tabbed him for an NFL GM job.
"But, hey, with the transfer portal and the way things have changed in college football, it's led us now to a situation where we have GMs in college football, directors of football operations, basically," Kiper said. "NFL front offices are now college football front offices. Jim benefited from that, but I really thought he'd be back in the NFL."
Oklahoma has the 50th-ranked transfer portal class of 2025 in On3Sports' rankings, which account for both portal exits and entries. Over at 247Sports, the Sooners are ranked 12th, though it accounts only for the players who have transferred in.
Headlining OU's 2025 portal class are former Washington State quarterback John Mateer and former California-Berkeley running back Jaydn Ott. The two are expected, along with new offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle, to improve on last year's offense that ranked 113th in FBS.
The Sooners are banking on Nagy and his front office staff's ability to evaluate talent to give them an edge on the recruiting trail.

Former Washington Redskins Clinton Portis and Ryan Kerrigan will be celebrating July 4 in Middletown, Va. The two former Redskins stars are not only celebrating our nation's independence in Middletown, but they are also being honored, as they have been named grand marshals for the July 4 Middletown parade. A third grand marshal has been named, Lauryn Ricketts, a meteorologist with WRC-TV and WTOP-FM in Washington, D.C. Portis before playing with the Redskins, was a Miami Hurricane prior to being drafted by the Denver Broncos. When Redskins cornerback Champ Bailey threatened to boycott training camp if they used the NFL franchise tag on him, Washington traded Bailey and a second-round draft choice to the Broncos for Portis. Playing in 113 NFL games, Portis rushed for 9,923 yards, averaging 4.4 yards a carry and scoring 75 NFL touchdowns. Following his NFL career, Portis was voted one of the Washington Redskins' greatest 80 players to mark the 80th anniversary of the franchise. Kerrigan played in 172 NFL games, all but one season in Washington, where he accumulated 95.5 quarterback sacks. The former first-round draft choice (16th overall) by the Redskins in the 2011 NFL draft, accumulated 333 solo tackles while also forcing 26 fumbles. Playing 10 seasons in Washington (his one final season in Philadelphia), Kerrigan became the Washington all-time quarterback sacks leader with 95.5. The four-time Pro Bowler led the NFL in 2016 with 18 tackles for a loss. 'We're excited that they're coming and we're looking forward to a wonderful July 4th celebration,' Mayor Charles Harbaugh said. 'We're really throwing everything but the kitchen sink at it.' The mayor was referring to a full slate of activities on tap for Independence Day, starting with a Big Ball softball tournament at 8 a.m. and ending with a fireworks show at 9:15 p.m. Events will be held at various locations in town but most will occur in Middletown Community Park. The centerpiece of Middletown's July 4th celebration is its parade. Organizer Katie Garrett said that as of Thursday morning, 76 entries were set to participate. The parade will step off at 5 p.m. and wind its way along Main Street.

Arizona Cardinals' biggest surprise of offseason program is rookie LB, says ESPN
While many have focused on a more muscular Marvin Harrison Jr., this rookie is turning heads. Every NFL team is currently on break as they get ready for training camps to open later this month. They all wrapped up their offseason programs and, as always, players impressed and surprised, even if some coaches won't say who specifically. ESPN compiled a list of the players who were the biggest surprises of their offseason program. For the Arizona Cardinals, believe it or not, it was not receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. with his noticeably stronger physique. Reporter Josh Weinfuss wrote that it was a rookie — fourth-round linebacker Cody Simon, their fourth-round pick out of Ohio State. The 2025 fourth-round pick has made a quick impression on coach Jonathan Gannon in a short amount of time. He's taken on the responsibility of wearing the green dot, which has added to the steep learning curve that comes with a player's first year in the NFL, but Gannon has praised Simon's ability to learn quickly from his mistakes. "He's definitely flashed here," Gannon said. "We got him playing a couple different spots, so that's good. He is playing on fourth down right now, so he is learning all that. He's eager to learn. He doesn't make mistakes twice and he's got juice. He's physical, just like all those guys. Long way to go. But I like where he is at." We don't know how much he has practiced with the first team in the offseason, if at all, but we will see in training camp whether he can crack the defensive rotation. With Mack Wilson and Akeem Davis-Gaither the favorites to start at inside linebacker, Simon has a shot after he was the Buckeyes' leader and defensive quarterback for their national champion team. He, along with second-round cornerback Will Johnson, have the best chances at earning a starting job as rookies. We will see soon what the buzz is about in training camp and the preseason.
