Transport Minister to launch 200 audio-enabled buses for the visually impaired in Mysuru
Minister for Transport of Karnataka Ramalinga Reddy will launch the new initiative on Monday, July 14, and the concept entails installation of an audio device on buses which will be activated by the users through a remote key to give it the route numbers and other details.
Pushpa Amarnath, vice-chairperson of the Karnataka State Guarantee Scheme Implementation Committee, told media persons here on Saturday that this initiative was being taken up in collaboration with BIZ India, and will help visually-impaired persons to independently board the buses plying to the routes of their choice.
She said it is only the Congress and its leadership which can conceive of such ideas and implement socially inclusive projects. She also credited Mr. Reddy for taking the initiative.
The event, scheduled for 1 p.m., will coincide with the celebration of the Shakti scheme reaching 500 crore free rides for women across Karnataka, said Ms. Amarnath. To mark this achievement, a special event titled Mahila Shakti Sambrahma will be held in Mysuru, she added.
She credited Chief Minister Siddaramaiah for the success of the Shakti scheme, describing it as a 'gift to the women of Karnataka', and a symbol of newfound mobility and dignity.
'Though we were not around when the country gained independence, women in Karnataka are now experiencing commuting freedom — the freedom to travel without fear, with confidence and self-reliance,' said Ms. Amarnath.
The Shakti Scheme has cost the government ₹776.8 crore so far in Mysuru district since its launch two years ago, while the expenditure incurred across the State was in excess of ₹12,733 crore, she added.

The Union government should allow the State Road Transport Corporations (SRTCs) to recruit drivers for the efficient operation of the new fleet of 100 electric buses each that the Centre is set to provide for Mangaluru and five other cities in Karnataka, said Transport and Muzrai Minister Ramalinga Reddy in Mangaluru on Sunday. Speaking at the inauguration of the automated driving test track in Phajir, near Mangaluru, Mr. Reddy welcomed the move of the Centre to sanction 100 electric buses each to Mangaluru, Belagavi, Hubballi-Dharwad, Kalaburagi, Mysuru and Shivamogga. The buses aimed at reducing pollution were set to be released to bus manufacturing companies. The companies were being asked to maintain the buses and also arrange drivers on their own, while the SRTCs will have to post their conductors and also provide space for depots for parking and maintenance of buses. For the efficient operation of electric buses, it would be beneficial to directly allocate these buses to SRTCs, enabling them to recruit their drivers. The State corporations should also be provided with a concession in the GST. 'We have written to the Centre. Except for the demand to allow us to recruit our drivers, the Centre has favourably responded to our demands,' the Minister said. Capt. Brijesh Chowta, MP, said the State government should take action at the earliest to complete the process of allotting land for setting up depots for electric buses. The introduction of electric buses will greatly transform commuting in the city by using government buses. He asked the Minister to take steps to have more buses on inter-State routes from Mangaluru, especially between Mangaluru and Kasaragod. U.T. Khader, Speaker and Mangaluru MLA, also spoke.

Karnataka's ambitious Shakti scheme, which offers free bus travel for women across the state, is set to achieve a significant milestone, 500 crore tickets issued, within just two years of its launch, reported The Times of India. It is expected to be crossed by July 14, with over 497 crore free tickets issued as of July 11, as per the publication. Siddaramaiah, DKS and Ramalinga Reddy distribute free tickets to women inside the bus while implementing Shakti scheme. The scheme allows free travel for women in non-luxury buses operated by KSRTC, BMTC, NWKRTC, and KKRTC. According to the report, more than 20,000 of the state's 25,000 buses now support free travel under the scheme. In June 2025 alone, over 73 lakh free tickets were issued each day, underlining the scheme's widespread adoption. Shivakumar are expected to participate in a symbolic ride by boarding a city bus and issuing free tickets to women passengers. Transport Minister R. To keep up with the rising demand and ageing fleet, the state has sanctioned a ₹2,000 crore loan and has initiated the process of adding 5,800 new buses. In addition, 10,000 new staff are being recruited to support the scheme's growing scale, including 1,000 appointments on compassionate grounds. The report further stated that the daily bus ridership has surged from around ₹85 lakh before the scheme to over ₹1 crore currently. The scheme's popularity has also been reflected in month-wise data, during its first month, 10 crore free tickets were issued at a cost of approximately ₹250 crore. By the second month, the figure had doubled to 20 crore tickets, costing around ₹453 crore. Ridership hit a peak in May 2025, when over 22 crore tickets were issued in a single month, driving costs up to ₹670 crore. Officials attribute this spike partly to a fare hike in January 2025, which made free travel even more attractive. The Shakti scheme was the first of five pre-poll guarantees implemented by the Congress government after its 2023 electoral win.

Bengaluru: Expressing appreciation that girls are leading in scoring 100 per cent marks, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said their presence in the armed forces and space sector is a symbol of the progress of the female community. He was speaking after inaugurating the 300th birth anniversary celebration of Rani Ahilyabai Holkar held at Ravindra Kalakshetra.'Education, organisation, and struggle' is the mantra given by Dr B.R. Ambedkar to the oppressed castes and communities. 'Shudras' and women were denied access to literacy and education. But due to Ambedkar's contributions, opportunities for education became available to the 'Shudras' and women. The compulsory education law provided by our Constitution also helped in this regard, CM Siddaramaiah said.'My grandmother used to say 'Kurubas' are far from education, why should we study? But I went to school, earned a law degree, and became the Chief Minister. Had I not used the opportunity to study, I too would have ended up grazing cattle and sheep. Hence, Rani Ahilyabai's educational revolution became an inspiration to all and to this women's organisation,' he said. 'Those who do not know history cannot shape the future,' he remarked. Despite being in power for 20 years, Rani Ahilyabai Holkar did not aspire to expand her kingdom. Though the royal treasury was full, she led a simple life and prioritised good governance and development. She also played a vital role in social reform by working to end child marriage, he Ahilyabai had a secular mindset and had even supported inter-caste marriage, the CM pointed out. Only when women become socially and economically empowered through education can inequality be eradicated and social development achieved, he said. 'No one becomes lazy because of our government's welfare schemes. On the contrary, they become socially empowered,' Siddaramaiah stated. 'Our government has implemented various schemes like Gruha Lakshmi and Shakti to empower women. These programmes have brought strength to society and to women, not laziness,' he clarified. The Chief Minister announced that land will be allotted in Bengaluru for the Karnataka Ahilyabai Mahila Samaja. CM Siddaramaiah further said that completing 25 years is a major achievement for any organisation. The Karnataka State Ahilyabai Holkar Women's Association has been highly successful. Yellamma and everyone involved deserve appreciation for their efforts, he added.
