Corporate fairytale: How a boy from the bush rose to run world's third-largest mining giant

Given the size of the iron ore division and its importance to Rio's profit, Trott became a highly important visible executive who would have enormous exposure to the London-based board and to shareholders.
Being a global mining house, Rio has a shareholder base that reflects its international citizenship, which is unlikely to be concerned about the nationality of its chief executive but who are supportive of Trott's elevation to the top.
But King and Rinehart (whose own mining company has joint venture iron ore operations with Rio) both sit alongside a wider movement to move Rio's base from London to Australia, where its iron ore division provides the global miner with its red-coloured cash cow.
However, Rinehart's desire to have the Rio head office moved to Perth amounts to wishful thinking from Australia's iron ore queen. Instead, Trott will be relocated to London.
The appointment of an Australian punctuates a line of chief executives who hailed from the ranks of global citizens – the most recent of whom was the Danish Stausholm, who left after speculation he had experienced a falling out with Rio chairman Dominic Barton.

Stausholm had filled the vacancy left by Frenchman Jacques. He followed Australian Sam Walsh, who had a brief three-year stint in the role after American Tom Albanese was ousted after a series of ill-fated acquisitions left the company with a $14 billion writedown.
Trott will usher in a new phase of Rio's progress, including productivity improvements on existing operations during a time when the iron ore price is under pressure.
He needs to continue his task of ensuring improvements in the running and the cost base of the Pilbara iron ore engine, but also manage the introduction into the market of ore from the giant Simandou project in Guinea, in which Rio owns a minority stake alongside its Chinese partners.
(This could make the joint venture with Rinehart look like a walk in the park.)

Additionally, Trott will have to tackle the numerous challenges of Mongolia's 66 per cent-owned copper and gold mine, which could be one of the world's top five copper mines if developed to its full potential, at a time when the commodity is expected to be in hot demand.
This involves dealing with the difficult relationship with the Mongolian government with whom the company is still battling over a tax dispute and historical claims of corruption.
And all this needs navigating in the middle of the Trump era of trade upheaval.

This was cut down to a revised list worth €72 billion, or about $128 billion. The list includes aircraft and aeronautical components, a major threat for Boeing in its competition with European giant Airbus. It also targets bourbon whiskey from states such as Kentucky, where 64.5 per cent of voters chose Trump at the presidential election. Other products on the list include cars, food, wine, beer and medical devices. Sefcovic shared the revised list with EU member countries this week, giving them a chance to negotiate changes, but also said he was prepared to do more. 'This does not exhaust our toolbox, and every instrument remains on the table,' he said. Export powerhouses such as Germany are concerned that retaliatory tariffs would only trigger a reprisal from Trump, who might pile even greater penalties on EU products. In the auto sector, for instance, the EU has more at stake with its exports than with any penalty it could apply on American products. While the EU shipped 749,170 new cars to the US last year, the US only sent 164,857 cars in the opposite direction. In the farm sector, France is concerned that retaliation would trigger White House reprisals against French wine and other high-value exports. The German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) said the situation meant an earlier 27.5 per cent tariff on European cars was still in force until a deal was struck. 'The costs for our companies are already in the billions – and the sum is growing every day,' VDA chief Hildegard Muller said in a comment to this masthead. 'With regard to any countermeasures, it must be ensured that they do not damage our own industry.' Muller said that two-thirds of the cars shipped from the US to the EU came from German companies – a key fact after German brands invested in American factories. The peak group for Italian wine exporters, the Unione Italiana Vini (UIV), called the Trump tariff plan the 'darkest page' in relations between Italy and the US. UIV president Lamberto Frescobaldi said the 30 per cent tariff on wine would push up prices so much that it was 'virtually an embargo' of 80 per cent of the Italian wine exports, costing hundreds of thousands of jobs. The retaliation is being described in Brussels as a final option if Trump does not give ground on his 30 per cent tariff, but it depends on EU member states holding their nerve. If some countries fear reprisals from Trump, they may push for carve-outs from the retaliation plan in the hope it would spare their biggest industries from even greater US trade penalties.

Stellantis is giving up on hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, with the French-Italian-American automaker ending development of the technology and halting production of fuel cell-powered vans. In a statement, Jean-Philippe Imparato, the company's chief operating officer for Europe, said: 'The hydrogen market remains a niche segment, with no prospects of mid-term economic sustainability. We must make clear and responsible choices to ensure our competitiveness and meet the expectations of our customers with our electric and hybrid passenger and light commercial vehicles offensive.' Due to the absence of fuelling infrastructure, lack of financial incentives and high purchase cost, the automaker says it 'does not anticipate the adoption of hydrogen-powered light commercial vehicles before the end of the decade'. With this announcement, Stellantis will not move ahead of series production of the Opel Vivaro-e Hydrogen/Peugeot e-Expert Hydrogen/Citroen e-Jumpy Hydrogen mid-size vans, and the larger Opel Movano-e Hydrogen/Peugeot e-Boxer Hydrogen/Citroen e-Jumper Hydrogen/Fiat e-Ducato Hydrogen vans. We understand a limited number of hydrogen vans have already been delivered for advance orders. The Vivaro-e Hydrogen has a 45kW fuel cell, and its hydrogen tanks can be refilled in around three minutes. The van is technically a plug-in hybrid as it also has a 10.5kWh lithium-ion battery pack that allows it operate as a pure EV for around 50km. Total combined range under the WLTP standard is 400km. There will be no jobs lost at Stellantis, with those working on hydrogen fuel cell development and vehicles moved to other projects. Stellantis isn't the only automaker to change course on hydrogen fuel cell cars. Toyota, one of the biggest proponents of the technology, gave up on its dreams of fuel cells being as ubiquitous as hybrids in 2023, deciding to focus instead on fuel cell commercial vehicles. That said, the hydrogen fuel cell Toyota Mirai sedan (below) remains available, and automakers are still churning new fuel cell cars every so often. Hyundai unveiled the handsome second-generation Nexo (below) earlier this year, and confirmed it will be available Down Under. The plug-in hybrid fuel cell Honda CR-V e:FCEV made its debut in early 2024, but is only available in parts of the US and Japan. Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles combine atmospheric oxygen with hydrogen stored in on-board tanks to produce electricity and water. The electricity generated powers electric motors which drive the wheels. Like with petrol-electric hybrids, excess power generated by the fuel cell, as well as energy recovered via regenerative braking, are stored in a high voltage battery pack. Despite being the most abundant element in the universe, hydrogen exists in much smaller quantities on Earth, and what we have is locked in compounds, such as water and organic material. As such, extracting pure hydrogen requires large amounts of energy. Without factories generating large quantities of hydrogen, delivery logistics, and facilities to sell it to the public, filling up a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle can be rather problematic. According to the CSIRO, there are 13 hydrogen fuel stations in Australia. The US isn't much better with around 100 stations nationwide.
