Anti-narcotics drive: 189 test positive for drug consumption over 4 days in Mysuru
A total of 189 persons have tested positive for consuming narcotic drugs out of the 541 suspects rounded up in Mysuru over four days as part of an anti-drug drive. The drive was carried out after an illegal drugs manufacturing facility was found on the outskirts of the city. City Police Commissioner Seema Latkar said that the police rounded up suspected drug consumers and persons with a prior history of drug consumption from different parts of the city as part of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act drive. In consultation with the doctors of K.R. Hospital, a drug testing kit was used to test if they had consumed drugs. The city police will be booking cases against all the 189 persons who had tested positive for consumption of drugs. Speaking to reporters on Saturday, when a large number of suspected drug consumers assembled at the Chamundi Vihar Indoor Stadium after being rounded up from different police stations in Mysuru, Ms. Latkar said that a total of 51 persons had tested positive out of the 259 picked up on Saturday. Responding to questions, Ms. Latkar said that among the ones who tested positive, most had consumed ganja. She further said that there is no information about suspects consuming MDMA, the narcotic drug that was allegedly found at a makeshift unit on the outskirts of the city when a team of police officials from Mumbai and Mysuru conducted a raid. Apart from booking cases against all the 189 people testing positive for consuming drugs, the city police had registered 11 FIRs against drug peddlers in the city for either sale or possession of drugs. As part of the documentation process, the city police sought an explanation from all the persons rounded up for suspected drug consumption. The ones rounded up were from different parts of the city, including places under Mandi Mohalla, Udayagiri, Krishnaraja, and Nazarbad police station limits, she said. Ever since the joint operation by the Mumbai Police and Mysuru Police busted an illegal drug manufacturing facility in the city, the police has carried out intensive search and combing operations as part of the anti-drug drive. The police also sought information from pharmaceutical shops to clamp down on any effort to peddle drugs through fake prescriptions. Based on tip-offs, the police raided several shops in the city.

Kochi professor placed under ‘virtual arrest', swindled out of Rs 1.19 crore
KOCHI: A 77-year-old retired college professor in Kochi lost Rs 1.19 crore to cyber fraudsters who impersonated Mumbai cyber cell officers. Based on the professor's complaint, the Elamakkara police have registered a case and launched an investigation. Police said after receiving Rs 60 lakh from the sale of a property last week, the victim was contacted by someone claiming to be from an international courier firm on July 21. The caller informed him that a parcel sent in his name from Mumbai to Bangkok had been intercepted with narcotic substances including MDMA. The call was then 'transferred' to someone claiming to be from the Mumbai cyber police. The person, who introduced himself as Cyber Cell Inspector Vijay Paul, told the professor that he had been virtually arrested and warned him not to disconnect the call or speak to anyone else. The caller began interrogating the professor, accusing him of using his bank account to launder drug money. Though the professor explained that the Rs 60 lakh was from a property sale, the fraudsters said they didn't believe his version.
