MSU hockey considered lock for No. 1 seed in NCAA Tournament

Yahoo19-03-2025
Michigan State hockey is considered a lock to get a No. 1 seed in the upcoming NCAA Tournament, and should be stationed close to home for their first weekend game(s).
College Puck NXT released an updated batch of college hockey bracketology on Wednesday, which stated the Spartans are considered a lock for a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. They also have the Spartans positioned to open the tournament in Toledo -- this isn't necessarily a lock but I don't see how that could possibly change at this time in the season.
Michigan State is projected to face No. 4 seed Holy Cross in the first round of the tournament, and would then face the winner of No. 2 seed UConn and No. 3 seed Denver should they advance. One interesting note from College Puck NXT is that there's a possibility that the Spartans could be matched up with rival Michigan in the first round of the tournament should the Big Ten land five or more teams in the field. As of right now, that is the case with Michigan, Penn State, Ohio State and Minnesota also projected to be dancing this year.

As of right now, College Puck NXT has the Wolverines facing off with No. 1 seed Boston College in the Manchester Region. But certainly, this is something to keep an eye on. As Spartans faithful will remember, Michigan State was knocked out of the NCAA Tournament by Michigan in the second round last year.
Check out the full bracket projection from College Puck NXT in the post below. The official NCAA Tournament bracket will be released on Sunday at 3 p.m. ET. The show will be televised on ESPNU.

NCAA makes March Madness expansion decision for 2026

March Madness won't be expanding — not yet, at least. The NCAA announced Monday that it will not look to expand the current NCAA Tournament fields from 68 teams for the 2026 championships, but discussions will continue about potential expansion beyond next year. 'Expanding the tournament fields is no longer being contemplated for the 2026 men's and women's basketball championships,' Dan Gavitt, the NCAA's senior vice president of basketball, said in a statement. 'However, the committees will continue conversations on whether to recommend expanding to 72 or 76 teams in advance of the 2027 championships.' March Madness began in 1939 with an eight-team field, doubling to 16 teams in 1951. 'It has been brought up before, but there was never the kind of consensus interest as there is now,' Gavitt told The Post in February. 'Doesn't mean it is going to happen, but there's a lot more interest than there's even been in the last decade.'

Notre Dame star is named to the 2025 Walter Camp Player of the Year watch list

Add another preseason accolade to the list for Notre Dame star running back Jeremiyah Love. The Walter Camp preseason first-team All-American has been named to the 2025 Walter Camp player of the year Watch List. This shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone. The 6-foot, 206-pound Fighting Irish junior ran for 1,125 yards and 17 touchdowns in 2024, and he caught 28 passes for 237 yards and two receiving scores. Included in those numbers is his school record-tying 98-yard touchdown run on the third play of the first-round College Football Playoff game against Indiana. Big things are expected this fall, in what could be his final season in South Bend. Love and the Irish begin their quest to return to the CFP when they open at Miami on August 31. Notre Dame coach Mike Mickens to be inducted into Cincinnati Athletics 2025 Hall of Fame

It's been a notable offseason for Notre Dame, from great success on the recruiting trail to various preseason honors, and the Fighting Irish can add one more accolade to the group. Defensive backs coach Mike Mickens has been named one of six inductees into the University of Cincinnati's Athletics 2025 Hall of Fame class. It's a big honor for the former Bearcats cornerback. Mickens was a first-team FWAA All-American In 2007 and a four-time all-Big East selection who remains the program's career leader in interceptions with 14. He starred for the Bearcats from 2005-08, appearing in 47 games under Mark Dantonio and former Fighting Irish boss Brian Kelly. In addition to his record for picks, he recorded 234 tackles (nine for a loss), a sack and a forced fumble. Three of his interceptions were also returned for touchdowns.
