BTS' global fans express love and support for K-pop group through art

Straits Times26-06-2025
SEOUL – A new chapter is unfolding for K-pop boy band BTS now that all members have been discharged from the military, and their fans around the world have gathered their art in Seoul to express their love and support.
The Presence In Absence: The Art Of BTS Chapter 2 exhibition has brought together works by 20 fan artists from 13 countries, including Belarus, Chile, Iran and Ukraine. Many of the works are digital paintings, while some were created with graphite or ink.
Dr Yvette Wohn, an associate professor at New Jersey Institute of Technology, who co-curated the exhibition, has been painting RM since the pandemic. She was seeking meaning in life aside from her career, which involves studying the characteristics and consequences of social interactions in online environments.
'Fan art is a form of love language. People express love in different ways depending on their personality and skill set. Throughout history, artists have been inspired by other artists across genres of music, literature and more.'
She added: 'I think there is a negative bias against all types of fan activities as something that is low-brow, but from a philosophical perspective, I feel that fan art is a wholesome expression of love.'
Ms Seo Ji-eun is founder of the art consulting firm Jesper and co-curator of the exhibition. She said when she contacted fan artists through social media, most of those who had a following were favourable to the idea of a fan art show. Visitors to the exhibition included those hoping to see particular artists they like, she said.
'I did not expect visitors from such a wide range of countries. It was quite surprising. BTS fans from nearly 25 countries have visited so far,' she said. Ms Seo added that many of them were in Seoul for BTS Festa and BTS member Jin's concert that takes place on June 28 and 29.
'Koreans might take it for granted as they are already familiar with K-pop idol culture, but the power of BTS is truly incredible. Around 95 per cent of the visitors are foreigners and their impact goes far beyond just the economic benefits from travelling, shopping and food while they are in South Korea.
'Culturally, it is huge. So many of them are learning Korean because of BTS,' she said.
The exhibition runs until June 29 at Taxa Seoul in Seongdong-gu, northern Seoul. THE KOREA HERALD/ASIA NEWS NETWORK

Injured dancer Lee Kai Yin shares first photo of face since Mirror accident in 2022

Find out what's new on ST website and app. Lee Kai Yin shared a recent photo of himself (left) on social media on July 23. Hong Kong dancer Lee Kai Yin has shared a close-up photo of himself for the first time in three years. The 30-year-old, also known as Ah Mo, was critically injured in July 2022 when a giant LED screen fell on him during a concert by popular Hong Kong boy band Mirror at the Hong Kong Coliseum. Lee suffered a severe spinal injury and was in critical condition for more than a month. Reports then said he faced the possibility of being paralysed from the neck down. Hong Kong media said he has left the territory to continue his treatment overseas. On July 23, Lee shared on Instagram several photos, including one of himself in a wheelchair. Although filters were used on the face, the tattoos on his chest and one of his arms matched those in old photos of him. A scar was seen near his collarbone in the latest photo, which was probably caused by a tracheostomy tube in his neck. 'It's me!' he wrote in English, before adding in Chinese: 'I was encouraged by what the daughter of an optical shop owner said yesterday, so I'm going to share some of the little things which made me feel good lately and see if I can pick up energy from you all.' Lee shared a picture of the items on his table, including K-pop girl group NewJeans' official light stick, three Teletubbies figures, two photos of a sunset and two pictures of cats. 'He asked why I was so selfish': Kym Ng recalls emotional conversation with husband about afterlife plans, Entertainment News

Death and afterlife planning is not something that everyone finds easy to deal with — and of course it takes time to say goodbye to your loved ones when they have died. In a recent interview with AsiaOne to promote her new drama Where The Heart Belongs, local veteran actress-host Kym Ng recalled an emotional conversation she had with her husband about their afterlife plans. The 58-year-old said: "I have a very 'loud' job which makes people know me (well), but as a person, I'm not very high profile. Which is why I feel that when I die, I don't need to hold a funeral wake and let everyone know that I have passed away." Kym also mentioned to her husband that "people should come and see me when I'm still alive and beautiful but not see me when I'm dead". In response, she recounted her husband telling her: "Why are you so selfish? Even after you've passed away, you should give me time and consider my feelings too. A five-day funeral might not matter to you, but it makes a difference to me." The couple married in 2009 and do not have children. His identity has not been revealed as well. Kym's perspective of afterlife planning changed when she heard her husband's response — realising that the funeral is for the living, not for the dead, as the people around her need time to say their final goodbyes too. "It's heartbreaking for your loved ones when you pass away suddenly and you don't want anyone to know. At least when the body is still there — in the coffin — they have some time to get themselves ready (to bid farewell)." Filming quarrel scene in new drama Kym plays Zhong Yilian in Where The Heart Belongs, who is the fourth adopted mother of Situ Ziyang (Romeo Tan). Set in a fictional world, this drama focuses on Singapore's futuristic plans, where society has entered a super-ageing phase. As the number of elderly people living alone rises, young people begin adopting the elderly. While the drama explores the sombre theme of an ageing population, the filming process had its lighter moments too. When asked if there were any interesting experiences during filming, Kym shared about a quarrel scene with another character in which some strands of her hair were really pulled out. "The scene was quite hysterical and fun to film as we often see similar fights in Korean dramas or between aunties. So, we styled the scene this way, and it turned out to be quite successful," Kym shared. As the interview returned to the drama's theme, the mood shifted, and Kym ended on an emotional note. "I hope the drama will remind people to be more loving and caring towards the elderly and make them be aware of the need to pay more attention to older folks," she said. Where The Heart Belongs, which also stars Denise Camillia Tan, Zhu Houren, Xiang Yun and Yao Wenlong, is available on demand for free on Mewatch from July 28. It will also premiere on Channel 8 on July 31, airing weekdays at 9pm. [[nid:720169]] No part of this article can be reproduced without permission from AsiaOne.
