Colegio de San Juan de Letran is heading to the NCAA Season 100 men's volleyball finals armed with confidence, especially after taking down twice-to-beat De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde in the tournament's Final Four.
The Knights defeated the Blazers in their do-or-die match in the semifinals last Friday and will go against Arellano University in the best-of-three finals which will start on Sunday.
Bembem Bautista, one of the leaders of Letran's campaign, said he is happy with how they reached the finals.
"Parang sobrang saya. 'Yung pinagtiyagaan namin na training halos araw-araw sa isang taon, may bunga na. Nandito kami ngayon sa finals," Bautista told GMA Integrated News.
"Natalo namin ang number one which is twice-to-beat pa [kaya] parang napakataas na ng confidence namin. Napakasaya ng team kaya parang na-boost ang energy namin."
During the said match against Benilde, Bautista had 27 points which he said was something he did not expect.
"Ang saya ng ganoon na nung fourth set, nakagawa ako ng ganoong puntos and nakarating kami sa finals," Bautista added.
With a chance to claim the title for the first time after 16 years, Bautista said that the Intramuors-based squad will be fearless heading into the finals.
"Depende sa makakalaban kung pupuksain ako, eh di siyempre hindi naman kami magpapatalo. Walang Letranistang takot," he said.

Returning Maxine Esteban captures silver in African tilt

Paris 2024 Olympics - Grand Palais, Paris, France - July 28, 2024. Pauline Ranvier of France in action against Maxine Isabel Esteban of Ivory Coast. (REUTERS/Albert Gea) Maxine Esteban returned from a long injury layoff in style, winning a silver medal in the women's individual foil category of the 23rd African Fencing Championships. The Filipino-Ivorian fencing star came back to action after eight months with her last competition being the 2024 Paris Olympics, where she finished 23rd overall before taking time off to nurse a nagging back injury. 'This medal means everything—it's proof that patience and recovery pay off,' Esteban said. The 24-year-old Esteban was impressive in her return, pulling off a dominant 15-3 against Algeria's Malek Tantast in the Round of 16 before gutting out a 15-12 win against Egypt's Jana Ehab in the quarterfinals. She then eliminated another Egyptian bet in Malak Hamza, 15-8, in their semifinals duel. Esteban, however, fell to Sara Hossny in the finals to take home the silver. —JKC, GMA Integrated News

Alex Eala is bringing the PH to Wimbledon with the 'sampaguita'

Alex Eala is Wimbledon Centre Court-bound and she's taking the Philippines with her through the sampaguita. On Instagram, the 19-year-old Tennis darling shared snaps of a white hair tie adorned with a single sampaguita flower and in the caption zeroed in on the National Flower, saying it is "a reminder of where I come from – and everything that brought me here." "Ang sampaguita ay paalala ng aking pinanggalingan at ng kulturang lagi kong dala-dala," she also wrote in Filipino. Thanking the sports brand, Eala said "I get to bring all of that with me onto Wimbledon Centre Court — bitbit ko sa bawat galaw." Alex made the whole country proud after she reached the finals of the Eastbourne Open. She may have suffered a heartbreaking lost to Maya Joint in a gruelling 4-6, 6-1, 6(10)-7(12) showdown on Saturday — one she called "one of the toughest losses" of her career — but the Filiipino tennis star reached a new career high, jumping to the no. 56 in the Women's Tennis Association rankings. She is set to face Wimbledon defending champion Barbora Krejcikova in the first round of the said Grand Slam tournament on Tuesday at the famed Centre Court, and one she's called her "dream match." We're rooting for you Alex! Laban! — LA, GMA Integrated News
