TAWAU: Police arrested a 30-year-old fisherman suspected of carrying more than 3kg of syabu worth about RM105,000 at Indrasabah. The foreigner, who tested positive for methamphetamine and amphetamine, is believed to be a drug transporter attempting to smuggle the substance to a neighbouring country. Tawau District Police Chief ACP Jasmin Hussin said the arrest was made around 3.30pm on Friday at the entrance area to Indrasabah Fishing Paradise. 'The man tried to flee when approached and threw a grey bag to the ground before being apprehended,' he told a media conference at the Tawau District Police Headquarters, Wednesday. The syabu, weighing 3,085.54 grammes, was discovered after examination of green tea packages. 'Investigation to identify the drug syndicate network and the suspect's modus operandi for transporting syabu to neighbouring countries is ongoing,' Jasmin said. Asked about the potential use of local fishing boats as secret transportation for drug smuggling, he did not rule out the possibility. However, police are also considering the likelihood of speedboats being used to cross borders and enter Indonesian waters within short periods. 'Preliminary investigations conducted so far also indicate that the suspect received drug supplies from local suppliers rather than from neighbouring Philippines,' he added. Two Sabah reps, businessman plead not guilty to bribery over mining licences
KOTA KINABALU — Two Sabah assemblymen and a businessman pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here today to corruption charges involving mineral mining licensing in the state in 2023. The accused — Sindumin assemblyman Datuk Dr Yusof @ Josree Yacob, Tanjung Batu assemblyman Datuk Andi Muhammad Suryady Bandy, and businessman Datuk Tei Jiann Cheing — made their pleas after separate charges were read before Judge Jason Juga. Yusof, 69, who is the chairman of Qhazanah Sabah Berhad, was charged with one count of receiving a RM200,000 bribe from Tei as an inducement to facilitate a prospecting licence application for mineral exploration in Sabah. The alleged offence took place at a hotel here at 2 pm on March 6, 2023. Andi Muhammad Suryady, 44, who is also Sabah Assistant Minister of Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship and the Member of Parliament for Kalabakan, was charged with receiving a RM150,000 bribe from Tei as an inducement to facilitate a prospecting licence application for mineral exploration in Sabah. The alleged offence occurred at the assemblyman's residence here at 11 pm on May 12, 2023. Meanwhile, Tei, 36, was charged with two counts of giving bribes to Yusof and Andi Muhammad Suryady, respectively, at the same locations, dates, and times. The two assemblymen were charged under Section 16(a)(A) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009, while Tei was charged under Section 16(b)(A) of the same law. If convicted, they face up to 20 years in jail and a fine of not less than five times the amount of the bribe or RM10,000, whichever is higher. Deputy public prosecutors Nurul Izzati Sapifee and Rustam Sanip appeared for the prosecution. Yusof and Andi Muhammad Suryady were represented by lawyers Datuk Ram Singh, Shahlan Jufri and Ridzwandean Borhan, while Tei was represented by Edward Paul. Yusof and Andi Muhammad Suryady were each granted bail of RM50,000 in one surety, while Tei was allowed RM60,000 bail in one surety. The court also set Aug 5 for mention and ordered all the accused to surrender their passports and report to the nearest MACC office every two months. — BERNAMA

KOTA KINABALU (June 30): Two elected representatives from Sabah and a businessman today pleaded not guilty to bribery charges related to a mining licence scandal at a Magistrates' Court here. Sindumin assemblyman Datuk Dr Yusof Yacob and Kalabakan MP Datuk Andi Muhammad Suryady Bandy each face one charge, while businessman Dato Tei Jiann Cheing faces two charges under the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009. According to the facts of the case, Yusof and Andi allegedly received RM200,000 and RM150,000, respectively, from Tei in 2023 to help facilitate the issuance of mineral licences. Judge Jason Juga set Aug 5 for pre-trial case management. All three accused were granted bail, which they subsequently paid. Yusof (third right) with his lawyers walking up to the court at 8.50am. Yusof and Andi were each released on RM50,000 bail with RM10,000 deposited under one local surety. Tei was released on RM60,000 bail with RM15,000 deposited under one local surety for both charges. Apex court to deliver verdict on final appeals in Kevin Morais murder case

(File pic) PUTRAJAYA: The Federal Court will deliver its verdict tomorrow on the final appeals by six men convicted and sentenced to death for the 2015 murder of deputy public prosecutor Kevin Morais. The decision will be handed down by a three-member bench led by Chief Justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat, sitting with Court of Appeal president Abang Iskandar Abang Hashim and Federal Court judge Rhodzariah Bujang. The judges reserved their judgment on May 14, after hearing submissions from the prosecution and defence. Jasmine Cheong, one of the lawyers representing former pathologist Dr R Kunaseegaran, told Bernama that the court notified them of the date for the decision this morning. Kunaseegaran, 62, was convicted of Morais's murder in July 2020 by the Kuala Lumpur High Court, together with S Ravi Chandran, 54; R Dinishwaran, 33; AK Thinesh Kumar, 32; M Vishwanath, 35; and S Nimalan, 32. The Court of Appeal upheld their convictions on March 14 last year. The murder took place somewhere along Jalan Dutamas Raya Sentul and Jalan USJ 1/6D, Subang Jaya, between 7am and 8pm on Sept 4, 2015. Morais was last seen in a Proton Perdana, leaving his Menara Duta condominium in Kuala Lumpur for his office at the Attorney-General's Chambers in Putrajaya.
