Report: Penn State to beat out MSU hockey for superstar prospect Gavin McKenna

USA Today9 hours ago
It appears Michigan State hockey is going to come up just short in the Gavin McKenna sweepstakes.
It was a two-team race entering last week, and a new report from Cam Robinson of Elite Prospects suggests Michigan State is the loser in this tight recruiting battle. Robinson reported on Monday afternoon that McKenna is expected to commit to Big Ten rival Penn State over the Spartans.
McKenna is an elite prospect and considered the clear-cut No. 1 overall pick in next year's NHL Draft. The Spartans hosted him for a visit last week, which gave many fans hope that he'd join an already loaded Michigan State squad for next season.
As of the time of this post, McKenna hasn't officially committed to Penn State so there's always a chance things could change. But it sounds like Michigan State will not be adding this generational talent to next year's team. Still, Michigan State will be the favorite in the Big Ten and very well will enter the 2025-26 season as the preseason No. 1 team.

EA Sports College Football 26 Predicts the 2025 Season

The wait is over-and yes, I had to be early. I pre-ordered the deluxe edition of "EA Sports College Football 26" and jumped in the second it went live. Before even touching Road to Glory or Ultimate Team, I ran a fullDynasty Mode simulation-complete with coaching changes, transfers, and the 16-team College Football Playoff. This is one of the very first EA CFB26 season sims you'll see online-maybe the first. And if what played out is even remotely close to what happens this fall, we're in for chaos. In case you missed it, Alabama's Ryan Williams and Ohio State's Jeremiah Smith are featured on the cover. Here's what the game predicts - the Heisman winner, the national champion, the Playoff field and some pretty wild postseason results. National Champion Penn State capped off a 15-1 season by dominating Georgia 38-14 in the national title game. The Nittany Lions were consistent all year and knocked off Texas in the semifinal to reach the championship stage. With an elite defense and balanced offense in the sim, Penn State looked like the most complete team from start to finish. Heisman Winner Zachariah Branch, who is now at Georgia, took home the Heisman Trophy after a monster season in Athens. He finished with 1,733 receiving yards and 18 touchdowns. Other finalists included Byrum Brown from USF, Gunner Stockton from Georgia, Ryan Williams from Alabama, and Romello Brinson from SMU. Branch's explosive playmaking gave Georgia a spark all season long. Coach of the Year Kirby Smart earned Coach of the Year honors after leading Georgia to a 14-2 record and a dominant semifinal win over Baylor. The Bulldogs looked like a machine through most of the year, falling only in the title game. 16-Team Playoff Field Penn State Georgia Oregon Texas UCLA Baylor Duke Clemson Texas Tech BYU Miami Navy First round highlights included Navy upsetting UCLA, BYU slipping past Duke, Miami knocking off Baylor, and Texas Tech battling past Clemson. Semifinal Results Penn State defeated Texas 35-21 Georgia took down Baylor 30-20 Final Takeaway? No, it's not a crystal ball. But it's the most fun simulation we've got right now, especially with FPI and other models not fully updated yet. And based on these results? If you're a fan of Penn State or Georgia, you might want to pay attention. Penn State Football Preview 2025: Nittany Lions Season Prediction, Win Total Projection, Top Players

Penn State Nittany Lions Key to the Season Don't get totally hung up on the big downfield pass plays (but still keep pushing it deep).Yeah, it was what everyone was screaming about two years ago - Penn State didn't do much of anything down the field, no one respected the big play, and the safeties crept up and made all the short plays. Last year's team fixed the glitch and started cranking it up more, and it State was 9-0 when averaging more than 7.1 yards per attempt. However, with one of the nation's best ground games and a defense that should be among the best in America again, just keep things Nittany Lions were 11-0 when Drew Allar completed more than 62% of his passes, and 2-3 when he didn't. Over the last two years, the team is 18-0 when he hits that mark. If Fisher can be a regular in the backfield, look out. Penn State Nittany Lions Top Transfer, Biggest Transfer Loss Top Transfer In: Amare Campbell, LB good do you have to be to step off the street and into the middle gig at Linebacker U.?Campbell showed promise as a freshman at North Carolina, and then he turned it on last season with 76 tackles with 6.5 sacks, 11 tackles for loss, and two broken up passes. Be stunned if he's not the team's leading tackler. Top Transfer Out: Harrison Wallace III, WR State ended up ahead in the transfer portal game, especially at wide receiver, but Wallace is a strong, reliable veteran who caught 84 passes for 1,221 yards and six touchdowns over the last three seasons for the Nittany Lions. The talent is there to do that in one year in the Ole Miss offense. Penn State Nittany Lions Key Game Oregon, Sept. 27The date at Ohio State on November 1st is massive, but that might not matter if the Nittany Lions take care of Oregon in the Big Ten opener. There might be dangerous landmines to sidestep in November, and going to Iowa is scary, but beat the Ducks and avenge last year's Big Ten Championship, and start booking tickets for the College Football Playoff. Let's just say Penn State isn't exactly pushing the envelope when it comes to the non-conference games. FIU, Nevada, and Villanova are wonderful light scrimmages coming before a week off to prepare for a home game against Ohio State is starting the season against Texas. The Nittany Lions have to go to Columbus to deal with the Buckeyes, but the rest of the road games are Iowa, Michigan State, Rutgers, and UCLA. That's more than would've been nice to get Purdue on the slate, but missing Michigan, Illinois, USC, Minnesota, Washington, and Washington makes up for will be a stumble, but there won't be The Penn State Win Total At … 10.5Likely Wins: FIU, Nebraska, Nevada, Northwestern, Villanova50/50 Games: Indiana, at Iowa, at Michigan State, Oregon, at Rutgers, at UCLALikely Losses: at Ohio State 2025 Penn State PreviewPenn State Offense BreakdownPenn State Defense Breakdown © 2025 The Arena Group Holdings, Inc. Penn State Football Offense Preview 2025: Are the Loaded Nittany Lions the Best In America?

The parts are all there to do something not that Penn State has been conservative, but with a defense that only gave up 16.5 points per game and was seventh in the nation overall, there wasn't any real need to take many offense led the Big Ten in rushing, the chances taken down the field were reserved for key times, and it all firepower and experience are there to do more, though, as long as one key area steps up … X CFN, Fiu | CFN Facebook | Bluesky Fiu, CFN2025 Penn State Preview Penn State Defense BreakdownSeason Prediction, Win Total, Keys to Season- The Penn State receiving corps is undergoing an overhaul, but it might have upgraded. It lost top deep man Harrison Wallace III to Ole Miss, and No. 2 wideout Omari Evans (Troy) to Washington. Liam Clifford is the top returning non-running back receiver, but he only caught 18 transfer portal is taking over, with Kyron Hudson (USC) coming in for the outside, Devonte Ross for the flanker, and Trebor Pena (Syracuse) for the inside. Pena was the big get after catching 84 passes with nine scores in the high-powered Orange attack. Hudson is in his fifth year after catching 72 career passes with the Trojans, and Ross was fantastic last season with 76 grabs for over 1000 yards and 11 scores. - You don't get better by losing an all-time great tight end like Tyler Warren, who caught 104 passes for 1,233 yards and eight scores last season. Penn State has two good players in Khalil Dinkins and Luke Reynolds, and they can both catch - they combined for 23 grabs and three scores, even with Warren getting all the work. - No matter who's at receiver, the quarterback will make the passing game great. It only seems like Drew Allar outdueled Vinny Testaverde in the 1987 Fiesta Bowl, but he's going into his fourth season, and this is when he should take his game up a notch. After throwing 25 touchdowns and two picks in 2023, he and the offense started to push it down the field a bit more last year. He averaged over eight yards per attempt, and now, with his experience and the talent around him, look Beau Pribula off to Missouri, the backup combination of Jaxon Smolik and Ethan Grinkemeyer is good, but inexperienced. There's talent behind Allar, and both need real work. - The line is loaded. Olaivavega Ioane is a 6-4, 330-pound All-Big Ten guard who'll mash away on the left side along with fellow all-star Drew Shelton at tackle. Nick Dawkins is one of the Big Ten's best centers, former Wisconsin transfer Nolan Rucci will be great at right tackle, and sophomore Cooper Cousins should be just fine at right tackle. - If the running back room isn't the best in America, it's not far off. Nicholas Singleton can do a little of everything, running for over 2,900 yards and 32 touchdowns in his first three seasons, and catching 78 passes and eight scores. Kayton Allen led the team with 1,108 yards and eight touchdowns, and Quinton Martin Jr. is good enough to start just about anywhere else.
