Ramanathapuram farmers demand crop insurance, flood relief at grievance meeting
Demanding for the re-survey of damaged crops in the district, farmers said that though the crop insurance amount was released to few farmers, the amount was not released for those whose paddy crops were lost to the unseasonal rains and water scarcity, due to leaving out many areas from the survey process,
Also, as 80% of chilli crops were damaged in the district, the crop insurance amount should be given to those farmers, they added.
More than 50 farmers from Orivayal village of Kadaladi taluk went into a heated argument with the officials for not including the 1,000 acre farmland for compensation, as their paddy crops had damaged due to the unseasonal rains.
Similarly, a group of farmers from Melasirupothu, Sakkiyankulam and Senthaneri demanded flood relief fund for 2023-24. They alleged that a vast area of crops was washed away during the heavy rains which lashed many parts of the Southern district.
As they too had not received the crop insurance amount for 2024-25, they urged immediate disbursal of the insurance amount.
Michael, a farmer from Mudukulathur, said that the e-NAM, an online platform that connects agricultural commodity traders and primarily farmers, with buyers across India, which was started in the Paramakudi regulated market in 2015 was yet to kick off. He added that the crop insurance was not released for the farmers of Vagaikulam village in Kadaladi taluk.
'Farmers who have grown cotton in several acres of land in Paramakudi, Kamuthi taluk have suffered loss due to the damage caused by wild boars,' said Malaichamy, a farmer from Paramakudi.
Though they have submitted petitions regarding their grievance with the forest department officials, he said that the officials without a proper survey were denying the presence of wild boars in the nearby areas.
District Collector Simranjeet Singh Kahlon assured the farmers that their demands would be directed to the departments concerned and the process for addressing them would be expedited.

Designated in the Eastern Pacific, potential Tropical Cyclone Four-E is expected to strengthen into Tropical Storm Dalila on Friday. Live Events The Eastern Pacific hurricane season saw a very active start, beginning May 15. Tropical Storm Alvin kicked off the season in late May, followed by Hurricane Barbara and Tropical Storm Cosme. All three storms formed before the average first date of June 10 for a named storm in this region. Now, the fourth named storm, which will be called Dalila, is expected to form in the next two days. Interests along the coasts of southern and southwestern Mexico should closely monitor the progress of this system." The storm has a 90 percent chance of forming within 48 hours. There also is a 90 percent chance it will form within the next seven days. The NHC has been monitoring the disturbance that could become Dalila for several days. "An area of low pressure is forecast to develop late this weekend or early next week near the coast of Central America. Environmental conditions appear conducive for some gradual development of this system as it moves west-northwestward near the coasts of Central America and southern Mexico," the NHS said. While official forecasts for the storm's projected path have not yet been released, they are expected once the system forms. AccuWeather meteorologists are predicting an active season in the Eastern Pacific, with 14 to 18 tropical storms and seven to 10 hurricanes. Typically, the region sees about 15 tropical storms and four hurricanes in an average season. In contrast, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) projects a slightly less active season, forecasting 12 to 18 named storms. Of these, five to 10 could become hurricanes, with two to five potentially strengthening into major hurricanes. PTC 4-E is likely to become Tropical Storm Dalila Wind speeds within Potential Tropical Cyclone 4-E have picked up in an area of warm water about 340 miles off the coast of Mexico. When it attains tropical storm status, PTC 4-E will be named Dalila, according to Fox Weather. Maximum sustained winds are currently near 35 mph, with stronger gusts expected as the system intensifies in the coming days. Rainfall amounts between 2 to 4 inches are anticipated across parts of the Mexican states of Guerrero, Michoacán, and Colima through the weekend, with isolated areas possibly receiving up to 6 inches. In addition, the system is forecast to produce life-threatening surf and dangerous rip current conditions along the affected coastlines. In addition to the system that could develop into Dalila, the NHC is also tracking another disturbance off the coast of Central America. While this system has nearly no chance of developing in the next 48 hours, it carries a 20% chance of formation over the next seven days. Tropical Storm Watches have been issued for the southwestern coast of Mexico from Manzanillo to just west of Acapulco. The NHC is also watching a second area for potential tropical development in the Eastern Pacific due east of Potential Tropical Cyclone Four-E, offshore of southern Mexico and Central America. Wind gusts are expected to increase in strength over the coming days. Warm water temperatures will help the chances of a tropical cyclone. Water temperatures of 80 degrees or higher are needed to sustain tropical development.

Father, 2 children killed in fire at apartment in Delhi's Dwarka
Three members of a family were killed in a fire at a flat in a residential society in Delhi's Dwarka Sector 13 Tuesday morning. According to initial reports, the fire, which broke out at 9.58 am, engulfed the eighth and nine floors of the Shabad Apartment complex. Five fire tenders were rushed to the scene to contain the blaze, officials from the Delhi Fire Services said. Two children, a boy and a girl, both aged 10, attempted to escape the fire by jumping from a balcony, said the police. They were declared dead on arrival at Akash Hospital. Their father Yash Yadav, 35, who was reportedly engaged in the flex board business, also jumped in a desperate attempt to save himself and was declared dead at IGI Hospital, said the police. Yadav's wife and elder son survived the fire and were taken to IGI Hospital for medical attention. Authorities confirmed that all other residents of the society were safely evacuated. Power and piped natural gas (PNG) supply to the building have been cut off as a precaution. The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) have been notified to assess the structural stability of the building, said the police. Medical and support teams have been deployed at both Akash and IGI Hospitals to assist the affected family. The incident comes barely a day after two people died in a fire after an E-rickshaw caught fire while charging in Dilshad Garden. Around a month ago, a massive fire also broke out in Dilli Haat after a short circuit, gutting around 30 shops in the area. Delhi also reported its first heatwave day Monday after recording a maximum temperature of 45 degrees Celsius in some places. According to data obtained from Delhi Fire Services, May and June recorded the highest number of fire incidents throughout the year.
