Archdiocese of Caceres to hold Rite of Reparation and Healing after death in parish premises

GMA Network01-07-2025
The Archdiocese of Caceres will hold a Rite of Reparation and Healing on Wednesday, July 2 following a recent tragic incident at the Parish Church of San Francisco de Asis in Naga City.
The archdiocese said the church will remain closed until Wednesday 'to allow for a period of prayerful mourning and reparation.'
'The Rite of Reparation and Healing will be held on the evening of July 2, 2025, to restore the church's sacred character and offer communal healing,' it said in a statement on Monday.
The archdiocese also said that it will provide debriefing, trauma support, and spiritual accompaniment to the immediate family of the deceased and the affected parishioners courtesy of licensed psychologists and trained pastoral counselors.
'In these moments of sorrow and uncertainty, the Church offers not judgement, but the hope of Christ's mercy, who came to bind up the wounded and heal the brokenhearted. The Archdiocese is also collaborating closely with the proper authorities,' it said.
'We pray for the eternal repose of the soul of the deceased. We pray that deep psychological suffering will not lead to hopelessness. Let us also give the deceased's family and loved ones the privacy they need at this difficult time. We ask for prudence and sobriety, especially in social media.'

PCG: Human trafficking victims among survivors of capsized boat in Palawan

Several Filipinos supposedly bound for Malaysia were among the 11 persons on board a motorboat that capsized in the vicinity waters of Canibugan Island, Balabac, Palawan last June 8, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said Tuesday. According to the PCG, there were eight rescued individuals, two others missing, and one fatality from the MBCA Kumpit. The Coast Guard said the survivors were rescued by residents and fishermen from the nearby island. Initial investigation showed the passengers of the motorboat first arrived in Puerto Princesa City where they were picked up by a white van. 'After a six-to-seven-hour drive, they were transferred to a tricycle that brought them to a coastal pickup point. Then, they boarded MBCA Kumpit, with two crew members on board,' the PCG said in a statement. 'The survivors said they were on the way to Malaysia via a backdoor route in Bataraza, Palawan.' Further, the survivors told authorities that MBCA Kumpit encountered engine failure and began to drift in open waters. The PCG said a female passenger from Cavite was the lone fatality in the incident. Moreover, authorities were able to locate another group of individuals who were trying to exit the country in Rio Tuba, Bataraza also in Palawan. 'While they initially claimed to be tourists, the authorities are investigating the intelligence tip from earlier survivors that said they were part of the same illegal recruitment and transport operation bound for Malaysia via the backdoor route,' the PCG said. —Vince Angelo Ferreras/RF, GMA Integrated News

Seven Church of England priests face disciplinary process over abuse scandal

The Church of England - central to 85 million Anglicans worldwide - has been in crisis over safeguarding the vulnerable since a November report said ex-leader Archbishop Justin Welby had taken insufficient action to stop a prolific abuser. LONDON, United Kingdom - Seven Church of England priests, including a former senior bishop, will face disciplinary proceedings over safeguarding failures in the first such move since Archbishop Justin Welby was forced to stand down last year over a child abuse scandal. Former Archbishop George Carey, who was in February named in a list of 10 historic cases that would be considered by an independent judicial process, would not face any further action, the Church also said in an update published on Thursday. The Church of England - central to 85 million Anglicans worldwide - has been in crisis over safeguarding the vulnerable since a November report said ex-leader Welby had taken insufficient action to stop a prolific abuser. In February it identified 10 cases that should be independently re-examined because they had happened too long ago to be considered by the Church's usual processes. Former Bishop of Durham Paul Butler - who held one of the most senior bishoprics in the Church from 2014 to 2024 - is among those facing disciplinary proceedings. That process could result in penalties such as a permanent ban from ministry. Butler was responsible for safeguarding oversight in 16,000 Anglican churches in the country from 2010-2016. The proceedings against him and others form the next stage of the Church's efforts to restore trust following November's review. Welby, who stepped down within a month of the review's publication, is not facing disciplinary procedures. While the Church has repeated its commitment to taking seriously its response to the review, its governing body stopped short of backing a fully independent safeguarding model to handle complaints in February. — Reuters
