Top-ranked cities to mentor low performers in cleanliness rankings: Khattar
Khattar made the announcement during the Safai Mitra Samman ceremony at Kalpana Chawla Government Medical College in Karnal. The event celebrated Karnal municipal corporation's receipt of the President's Award under Swachh Survekshan 2024-25.
He explained that henceforth, the top and bottom-ranked cities will be paired. 'Cleanliness rankings will be assessed jointly for both. A top city can retain its position only if its paired city also shows improvement,' he said.
Congratulating Karnal's sanitation workers, officials, and public representatives, Khattar announced a ₹5,000 reward for each of the 1,380 sanitation staff. He also felicitated several key workers and municipal staff for their contributions.
Khattar emphasised the need to instill cleanliness values early, citing Japan's model where schoolchildren begin their day with cleaning. He added that cleanliness competitions will now also be held in villages across Karnal district.
Haryana assembly speaker Harvinder Kalyan, Karnal MLA Jagmohan Anand, and other dignitaries were present.
Later, Khattar visited Panipat to inspect the under-construction BJP district office and interacted with families outside a CET exam centre. In a widely shared video, he cautioned them against falling prey to exam fraud, saying, 'Only your merit will get you a job.'
Wrong to say crime has increased, instead it has reduced: Khattar
Manohar Lal Khattar on Saturday said that it is being spread that the crime in Haryana has increased, but according to the comparative figures from the Congress government, it has instead reduced.
'I've also seen the figures which suggest that if compared with 10 years of Congress rule in the state, the crime in every region has reduced by 10-20%. Though, population has also risen in the 10 years (of BJP rule) and if population is taken into consideration, there is more of a decline,' he told the reporters in Karnal.
He was responding to a question by a journalist. Khattar, who is also Karnal MP, said that in case of any occurrence of crime, the success of any government or the police is based on how quickly it is traced and those involved are arrested.
Infact, Khattar said, in most of the criminal cases, the reasons are personal.
'You see what happened recently in Jind (murder of a doctor). There was a collision between two cars that led to an argument and later turned into a murder. So we can't say that miscreant elements persist but most of the cases are personal,' he said.
When asked about a recent statement by former MLA Gopal Kanda on their support to INLD leader Abhay Chautala during the assembly elections, Khattar dismissed the claims.
'We vacated Sirsa's seat for Kanda, where he could not win. Other than this, we did not have any role to play,' he said.
The minister also refused to respond on the appointment of Rajya Sabha MP Subhash Barala's son Vikas Barala as AAG, and said that the state government or AG have a say in this.

Talking about creating more employment opportunities in Vidarbha, the minister recalled the statements of Mahatma Gandhi and country's first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru. "Nehruji used to say that we need maximum production, and Gandhiji used to say that we need maximum production with the involvement of maximum number of people," he said.

Earlier, Chidambaram posted on X that while 65 lakh voters in Bihar risk losing their voting rights, reports of adding 6.5 lakh voters in Tamil Nadu were 'alarming and patently illegal.' The EC rejected these allegations as "misleading," clarifying that the SIR has not yet been implemented in Tamil Nadu and accused the leader of spreading 'false figures' regarding the addition of 6.5 lakh voters there. 'It is therefore absurd to connect the SIR exercise in Bihar with Tamil Nadu. Such false statements about SIR should be avoided,' the commission stated. He called this designation an insult to migrant workers and said it interfered with the electoral rights of Tamil Nadu voters. The Election Commission explained that under Article 19(1)(e) of the Constitution, all citizens have the right to reside and settle anywhere in India. It is the responsibility of voters to enroll themselves in the constituency where they currently reside and are eligible. For example, a person originally from Tamil Nadu but ordinarily residing in Delhi can be registered as a voter in Delhi. Similarly, someone originally from Bihar but living in Chennai can register there. Chidambaram's post followed the EC's announcement that over 65 lakh enumeration forms were excluded from Bihar's draft electoral rolls ahead of the upcoming assembly polls. This revision reduced the number of registered voters from approximately 7.9 crore to 7.24 crore. According to the EC, 22,34,501 registered voters were found to be deceased, around 36.28 lakh had permanently moved out of Bihar or were not found at their listed addresses, and 7.01 lakh were registered at multiple locations. The Congress leader's criticism came even as the EC reported that no political party filed any claims or objections regarding the draft electoral rolls published in Bihar on August 1. The draft publication has sparked controversy, with opposition parties like the RJD questioning the accuracy and transparency of the EC's data, particularly concerning the number of deceased voters. During the first phase of the SIR, voters received enumeration forms either from Booth Level Officers (BLOs) or Booth Level Agents (BLAs) nominated by political parties. Voters were to return these forms with their signatures and valid identification documents. Voters who believe their names were wrongly deleted can appeal to the relevant authorities by September 1 to seek rectification.

PM Modi to inaugurate Bengaluru's yellow line metro, launch phase-3 on Aug 10
BJP leader Tejasvi Surya on Sunday announced that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Bengaluru and inaugurate the Yellow Line Metro on August 10. Tejasvi Surya said this could happen because of Modi's personal insistence that this must be open to public without any further delay.(PMO) Prime Minister will also lay the foundation stone for Metro Phase-3, he said. In a post on 'X', Surya said, "Hon. PM Sri @narendramodi Ji's visit to Bengaluru on August 10 will be a landmark moment for Bengaluru South. He will not only inaugurate the long-awaited Yellow Line Metro operations but also lay the foundation stone for Metro Phase 3 - a project that received Cabinet approval within the first 100 days of his third term." He said the Yellow Line will cater to close to eight lakh riders and the 'infamous Silk Board jam' will be addressed greatly. Public transport is the only option to reduce traffic congestion. "Together, these projects will benefit nearly 25 lakh people in Bengaluru South," he said. The MP said by inaugurating it on August 10, the Yellow Line Metro project would meet the August 15 deadline. Surya said this could happen because of Modi's personal insistence that this must be open to public without any further delay. Surya, who is also the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) national president, quoted Union Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, who said on 'X', "I am pleased to announce that the Hon'ble Prime Minister of India has kindly agreed to inaugurate 19.15 km Yellow Line from RV Road to Bommasandra of Bangaluru metro with 16 stations at the cost of ₹5,056.99 crore and lay the foundation stone of 44.65 km of Bangalore phase-3 at the cost of ₹15,611 Crore on 10th August 2025." Surya had staged a demonstration to open the Yellow Line of Bengaluru Metro Rail project recently.
