CCTVs in Delhi underpasses to keep eye on waterlogging
PWD already monitors a number of waterlogging hot spots in real time to take timely measures, including deploying mobile pumps.
'The cameras will be installed this month and will be connected to the centralised control room from where these points will be monitored,' said a PWD official, asking not to be named.
The department is in the process of hiring an agency that will install eight bullet cameras and three dome cameras at Moolchand and Pul Prahladpur underpasses, along with other equipment to support the live feed to the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system developed for monitoring and issuing timely alerts.
The official added that the department is trying to ensure live CCTV monitoring of nearly all underpasses by monsoon this year.
As per the standard operating procedure set by PWD, if the depth of water accumulation in an underpass at any location is around 6-8 inches, the control room is supposed to immediately inform the field unit and check with pump operators if the pumps are working. If the water level keeps rising, the traffic police is alerted to divert traffic away from the underpass.
Both Moolchand and Pul Prahladpur underpasses witnessed waterlogging after heavy rainfall last year, impacting traffic in south and southeast Delhi areas.
PWD minister Parvesh Verma earlier announced plans to get 1,800 temporary water pump sets for central Delhi's ITO and adjoining areas for the entire monsoon season. Additionally, permanent pump houses have been created at nearly all underpasses.
To avoid flooding in ITO, PWD is also laying down two new drain lines and carrying out desilting work on existing drains. According to PWD, 308 waterlogging points were identified in Delhi in 2023. In 2025, a total of 445 waterlogging points have been identified in the capital based on data shared by the traffic police. Of these, 335 points fall under PWD's jurisdiction.

Glass pieces found scattered along Kanwar Yatra route in Delhi, BJP raises alarm
A controversy has erupted in Delhi after several BJP leaders claimed that broken glass pieces were deliberately scattered along the Kanwar Yatra route in MLA Sanjay Goyal alleged that for the past two days, large quantities of glass shards have been found strewn across the road used by kanwariyas. "Yesterday, when we inspected the route, we saw glass scattered over nearly a one-kilometre stretch," the MLA said, adding that this posed a serious risk to the barefoot Delhi Minister Kapil Mishra reiterated the claims, saying that Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has taken serious note of the matter. "Some mischievous elements scattered glass pieces along the Kanwar Yatra route for nearly a kilometre. PWD and municipal workers are cleaning the route. Local MLA Sanjay Goyal ji is present there. CM Rekha Gupta has personally taken cognisance of the incident," Mishra posted on the complaint from the BJP leader and the Public Works Department (PWD), Delhi Police has launched an investigation into the matter. Fatal accidents, road deaths rise in Goa in second quarter of 2025
Panaji: There has been a 50% rise in fatal road accidents and a 40% rise in road deaths from the first quarter of the year to the second quarter, according to traffic police statistics. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now A fatal road accident refers to a road traffic incident that results in death, while a road death specifically quantifies the number of fatalities resulting from these accidents. The increase in fatal road accidents in the state is attributed to govt's move to reduce enforcement by withdrawing police personnel tasked with challaning traffic violations. Chief minister Pramod Sawant made the decision after receiving several complaints regarding harassment from police personnel, especially against those deployed for traffic management and from lower ranks. In the first quarter of the year, Goa recorded a 23% dip in fatal road accidents and a 25% dip in road deaths, presenting some positive signs of traffic safety after many years during which one person, on an average, lost their life in a road accident per day. However, by the time the second quarter of 2025 arrived, there was only a 12% decrease in fatal road accidents and a 14% decrease in road deaths. This came amid a 50% decrease in registering cases against traffic violators. A 22% increase in pedestrian deaths in road accidents was also recorded. With road accidents rising over the past two months, state govt in June allowed police sub-inspectors (PSIs) with body-worn cameras to challan traffic violators during the daytime. In April, PSIs were allowed to challan traffic violators at night. 'I announced that during the daytime, only PIs with body cameras will issue challans, and at night, only PSIs and PIs wearing body cameras will be empowered to do so,' Sawant said. Goa police set out to reduce fatal accidents by 10% in 2025 and the traffic cell has booked nearly 1.2 lakh people for violating traffic rules till June. It has also increased awareness drives on violations by conducting campaigns at schools, colleges and village panchayats. Over 500 lectures were conducted, and more than 39,000 people were educated about traffic rules. The traffic cell wrote to the PWD to take long-term and short-term measures to ensure that accidents are reduced on the roads. An analysis of accidents in 2024 by the traffic cell revealed that the maximum number of accidents occurred between 6pm and 7pm. A senior police officer said that a higher number of accidents occur after office hours as everyone is in a hurry to get home.

Viral Video: Truck overturns during road inspection in Maharashtra; people run in panic
A road inspection turned dangerous when a truck overturned after the road suddenly caved in. It happened at Khadki village near Vadwani taluka in Maharashtra's Beed district. The engineer and his team were on-site to check the road after students had complained about its poor condition. The students had even raised the issue with the Chief Minister's Gram Sadak Department. They asked for an alternative route as ongoing bridge work had made the road unsafe. In Beed district, the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) caught Chandrakant Chavan, chief officer of Majalgaon Municipal Council, accepting a ₹ 6 lakh bribe at his home. He had allegedly demanded ₹ 12 lakh to clear a ₹ 2 crore road work bill, according to PTI. Acting on a complaint, the ACB laid a trap. A case will be filed against him. No extra evidence was found during the house search.
